15 Super Exitos Nortenos

LP (Item 128127) TH MEX, Mid 80s — Condition: Sealed
...

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mongo Santamaria

Red Hot
Tappan Zee, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great Bob James-directed session from Mongo Santamaria – and a set that takes the fusion-inflected Latin work he was doing on the Vaya label, and blends it with an even tighter, sharper CTI Records vibe! The approach is a bit like that combination of underground Latin and larger label ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1955. Very Good+
A great collaboration between Perez Prado and trumpeter Shorty Rogers – one in which Rogers' solos sparkle brilliantly over the top of Perez's tight Latin rhythms – all in a style that's as moody as it is evocative and rhythmic! Side one features the extended "Voodoo Suite" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Machito/Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie

Afro Cuban Jazz
Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Groundbreaking Latin Jazz – and an essential 2LP set! The album brings together classic work for Norman Granz' Verve and Clef labels in the cubop mode – including Dizzy Gillespie's Manteca Suite, Machito's Afro-Cuban Suite, titles by Chico O'Farrill, and others recorded in 1949 and ... Willie Colon & Ruben Blades

Siembra
Fania, 1978. Very Good+
A classic 70s salsa jammer from Willie Colon – working here with his one of his greatest vocalists – the young Ruben Blades, back before he'd crossed over to super-huge success! The album really marks a departure for Willie – moving past the bad boy style of earlier records, that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tico, Early 50s. Very Good
Classic early work by Machito – recorded back when Mario Bauza was playing trumpet, and acting as his music director! The band has a good hard sound, with lots of strong jazz soloing, and plays with a fire that's missing from a lot of his later recordings. Tracks include "Asia ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie Palmieri

Electro Duro
Coco, 1974. Very Good
A great little record from Charlie Palmieri – and one of his oddest! The "electro" in the title refers to a strange tinny organ that Charlie plays on many cuts on the record, a cool little instrument that gives the songs a nice twist. The backing's pretty great in the classic Coco ... LP, Vinyl record album

Orquesta Melodias Del 40

Musica Cubana Bailable
Maype, Early 60s. Very Good
Not a set of older-timey Cuban music from the 40s, but instead a tight 60s charanga session – served up with titles that include "Embustera", "Seis Lindas Cubanas", "Danzon Con Pachanga", "Baila Charanga", "Como Se Goza En Cuba", "Es ... LP, Vinyl record album

World Pacific, 1962. Very Good+
A very different take on this score than the vocal one – thanks to great work from Victor Feldman on both piano and vibes – in a hip trio with Bob Whitlock on bass, and the great LA drummer Lawrence Marable – who really keeps things great at the bottom!
