Last Chorus

LP (Item 12810) Riverside, 1956 — Condition: Near Mint-

A fitting title for a wonderful record – the last album issued under the name of altoist Ernie Henry – an amazing 50s player who recorded famously with Thelonius Monk, but only got to make a handful of his own dates before an untimely early death! The posthumous release brings together some unreleased material cut by Henry for Riverside in a few different styles – a hip octet session with Melba Liston on trombone, Benny Golson on tenor, and Lee Morgan on trumpet; a piano-less quartet date cut with Kenny Dorham on trumpet; a session with Monk on piano and Sonny Rollins on tenor; and a quartet date with Wynton Kelly on piano. Titles include "Melba's Tune", "Cleo's Chant", "Ba Lu Bolivar Ba Lues Are", "Like Someone In Love", "All The Things You Are", and "Beauty & The Blues".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s OJC pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

George Russell

Stratus Seekers
Riverside, 1962. Very Good+
Key work from the guy who put the "modern" in modern jazz – the great George Russell, heard here in the company of some younger players who definitely help him seek out some new territory in music! The record's got a wonderful balance between sharp edges and swing – a sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mundell Lowe/Barbara Lea/Tony Burrello

This Could Lead to Love – Love Songs In High Fidelity
Riverside, Late 50s. Very Good+
An unusual record, with three different groupings of tracks – trio work with Mundell Lowe on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Jack Greenberg on English horn; vocals from Barbara Lea, with backing by a quintet led by Billy Taylor on piano; and solo piano from Tony Burrello. Riverside, 1966. Near Mint-
A surprisingly nice pairing – the vibes of Milt Jackson and some larger horn backings that fall heavy on the trumpet and trombone side of the spectrum! The sound's not nearly as heavy or hokey as you'd expect – thanks to arrangements by Melba Liston – and the horns do a nice job ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good+
A collection of sides cut in the early 60s by Wes for Riverside, collected later when the label was owned by ABC. There's a couple of cuts in a nice organ trio feature the great Mel Rhyne "Round Midnight" and "Yesterdays", plus several that feature his brothers Buddy and Monk ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lenny McBrowne & The Four Souls

Eastern Lights
Riverside, 1960. Very Good
A really compelling little album – the only one as a leader we've seen from Lenny McBrowne, a drummer who worked with Roland Kirk and some other left of center players in the 60s! The album's got a nice blend of modern and soul jazz themes – and was one of those excellent "Cannonba ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quietly There
Riverside/ABC, 1966/1970. Near Mint-
Amazing work from west coast saxophonist Bill Perkins – playing here in a mode that's quite different than his more famous 50s recordings! The style here is almost one you'd hear on late 60s A&M Records – definitely "quietly there", with a blend of Perkins' reeds and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Nat Adderley

Much Brass
Riverside, 1959. Very Good-
Despite the "much brass" tag in the title, this album's really just a sextet session – and not a clunky big brass ensemble one. Cannonball's brother plays with a very swingin' sextet that includes the brassy touches of Slide Hampton on trombone and Laymon Jackson on tuba. Wynton ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Bryant Trio

Con Alma
Columbia, 1960. Very Good+
Pure genius from Ray Bryant – the kind of a record that few other players could ever hope to cut, and a fantastic demonstration of Ray's extremely soulful approach to the trio format!
