McCanna

LP (Item 12762) Pacific Jazz, 1964 — Condition: Very Good+
A great Latin groove from the mighty Les McCann – a smoking set that adds in extra percussion from Willie Correa – who gives the record a sound that's quite a change from the usual McCann groove! The percussion is wonderful throughout – and given that the great Paul Humphrey is already playing drums in the trio, the whole thing's got a rhythmic zest that never lets up – way different than just the usual "with conga" style you'd hear on a Prestige Records piano trio record – and instead a groove that's definitely dedicated to the boldest Latin piano modes of the time! The track list includes a lot of originals, such as "McCanna", "Zulu", "Bastuto Baby", "Shaam-Pu II", and "Narobi Nights" – plus versions of "Que Rico" and "It Had Better Be Tonight".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Les McCann

Man
A&M, 1978. Near Mint-
A late 70s electric effort from McCann, not quite as sublime as some his records from a few years before this, but with some funky bits, and some vocals from Les. The best moments are the laidback mellow tracks, which have sort of a smooth Bobby Lyle feel to them. These titles include "The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt

My Mother's Eyes
Pacific Jazz, 1963. Very Good
A rare one for Sonny Stitt – an album for Pacific Jazz recorded on the west coast, but done with some hard-burning organ work by Charles Kynard that easily matches any of Stitt's best soul jazz sides from the east! There's a tightly cooking feel to the entire set that's really great – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Very Good+
One of the best-ever Chet Baker albums! The material is divided up into two sides – one featuring some of the last-ever work by pianist Richard Twardziak, one of Baker's best-ever accompanists, playing here in a tight little quartet with the great Jimmy Bond on bass and Peter Littman on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pacific Jazz, 1953. Very Good
The first-ever album on Pacific Jazz – and a real doozy too! The record's something of a blueprint for west coast jazz of the 50s – and features Mulligan in a pianoless quartet with Chet Baker on trumpet, Chico Hamilton on drums, and Bob Whitlock on bass – running through tunes ... Paul Bryant

Burnin
Pacific Jazz, 1960. Very Good+
A killer set from this great west coast Hammond player – easily one of the most soulful talents to grace the Pacific Jazz label – and sounding here a lot more like an organ cooker on Prestige! Russ Freeman/Richard Twardzik

Trio
Pacific Jazz, 1954. Near Mint-
One of the rarest albums on the Pacific Jazz label from the 50s – featuring a side apiece of trio material by pianists Russ Freeman and Richard (aka Dick) Twardzik. Both players were known as accompanists of Chet Baker during his sublime mid 50s run at Pacific Jazz – and although ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chet Baker & Art Pepper

Playboys
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Sealed
An excellent session that stands as one of both players' strongest from the time! Gerald Wilson

You Better Believe It!
Pacific Jazz, Early 60s. Very Good+

Don Ellis

Live At Monterey
Pacific Jazz, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A really great little album recorded by trumpeter Don Ellis in his early years – done at a time before he started putting a bit more fusion in his mix! The record features an extended live performance by a larger group, caught in concert at the Monterey Jazz Fest in 1966 – opening up ... LP, Vinyl record album

An incredibly strong set by McCoy Tyner – one of his best 60s sides for Blue Note – and a record that really hints at the majesty he'd attain on record in the 70s!
