❔

Perhaps the ultimate album for The Gap Band – and sure, it was a hit, but the record still sounds great today, and the constant sampling of some of the record has kept it fresh in the crates for years and years! The band have lost the heavier funk sound of earlier years, and working in a slick 80s groove mode that they both helped to define and put on the charts with the tracks "Outstanding" and "Early In The Morning", both two killer grooves with a complicated instrumental feel, and some wicked harmony vocals over the top. Lonnie Simmons is still producing the band – and other tracks include "Lonely Like Me", "Stay With Me", "Talkin Back", and "You Dropped A Bomb On Me".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Capitol, 1986. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
One of two classic live albums that Maze cut during the 80s – even more proof that the Maze style of soul music was not only thriving, but succeeding strongly outside the studio, and regardless of airplay and album sales! The general groove is very similar to the band's classic work from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isaac Hayes

Groove-A-Thon
Hot Buttered Soul/ABC, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
After leaving Stax, Ike seemed to be trying to turn himself into more of a Barry White-style artist – with more emphasis on original tracks about love and loving, instead of his older method of transforming pop hits into little baroque symphonies. On a record like this, the approach meant ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sister Sledge

We Are Family
Cotillion, 1979. Very Good+
Possibly the greatest moment ever from Sister Sledge – a set that has the Philly quartet teaming with the Chic team of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards! Rodgers' guitar brings in a hell of a groove to the record – that choppy, skittish sound that made Chic such a favorite at the time ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell

Easy
Tamla, 1969. Very Good+
The last set of duets from the team of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell – and a sublime set of tracks that really stretches their partnership even further than before! Lee Dorsey

Gonh Be Funky
Charly (UK), Late 60s. Near Mint-
A hot little collection of Lee's best New Orleans soul from the late 60s – chunky groovers that really have a lot of punch in the beat, most of which were originally produced by Allen Toussaint! The tracks are nearly all perfect – with a dark, descending groove that sounds unlike ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isaac Hayes

Love Attack
Columbia, 1988. Very Good+
The sound's a bit different, but the man himself has lost none of his charm – the legendary Isaac Hayes, stepping out here near the end of the 80s, in all of his mature, masculine power! Instrumentation definitely marks the date of recording – Ike's got more synth than piano or ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Turrentine

Let It Go
Impulse, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
A rare non-Blue Note 60s date as a leader from Stanley Turrentine – recorded for Impluse when his (then) wife Shirley Scott was contracted to the label – and featuring the talents of both players on some very groovy tracks! The quartet features both Stan's tenor and Shirley's Hammond ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Turrentine

Mr Natural
Blue Note, 1964/1980. Very Good+
The title's not a reference to Robert Crumb's famous comix character – and instead, it's a great name for this unreleased batch of work from Stanley Turrentine – a perfect summation for the easygoing soul that's always made Stan so great! The group's a nice bridge between the two ... LP, Vinyl record album
Jazzland, 1960. Near Mint-
An excellent album by Dexter Gordon – his first after a number of years spent without recording in the late 50s, and one that marked a real return to serious growth as a player during the 60s!
