Chinampas

LP (Item 12608) Leo (UK), 1988 — Condition: Near Mint-

A mystical solo performance by Cecil Taylor – not nearly as frenetic as some of his other work of the time! The setting is a studio one, and in the intimate space, Taylor delivers some of his compelling poetry – almost as lyrically jagged and dynamic as his famous piano lines on other records! There's no piano at all on this record – just bells and percussion used by Cecil to accompany his voice – which has also been overdubbed so there's occasional interplay of words in a way that almost reminds us of some of those cool Giorno Poetry Systems albums. The set's got almost an hour of performance – and really represents an fresh chapter in Taylor's career!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Two sidelong improvisation session with Kuryokhin on organ and Grebenshchikov on electric guitar. LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 60s. Sealed
Totally totally cool LP that has this groovy group playing with Oliver Nelson – who plays soprano on most tracks. The sound is very groovy, and very Now Sound, with a female vocal duet, and mod swingin' jazzy lyrics. The LP's got a nice version of "My Favorite Things", a cool ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wynder K Frog

Out Of The Frying Pan
United Artists, 1969. Near Mint-
A lost Hammond classic – from organist Mick Weaver, who famously worked with the group Traffic! This set's a lot different than the work he did in that band, though – as the album's all instrumental, and has a quick-stepping, all-soul sound that's a lot like the best Jimmy McGriff ... Charles Mingus

Mingus Ah Um
Columbia, 1959. Very Good+
One of Charles Mingus' true classics – and an essential album in any jazz collection! This 1959 gem was recorded by Mingus at a key point in his career – when he was rising from the jazz underground into the ranks of America's elite jazzmen, penning some of the most challenging work of ... Clifford Jordan & Sonny Red

Story Tale
Jazzland, 1961. Near Mint-
A brilliant collaboration between Clifford Jordan and Sonny Red! At the time of this recording, Jordan was one of a number of firey young tenor players from Chicago – all of them hard-blowing, with a nice soulful bottom that opened up a bop sound to more moods and emotions – but Jordan ... Milt Jackson

Meet Milt Jackson
Savoy, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Great early material from Milt Jackson – very different than his 50s material with the MJQ, and much more in the spirit of his work for Blue Note! The groups here vary – and in addition to vibes, milt handles a bit of piano, and even sings on one track too – alongside players who ... LP, Vinyl record album

Main Ingredient

I Only Have Eyes For You
RCA, 1981. Near Mint-
A great later album from the Main Ingredient – professional, polished, and filled with wonderful harmony vocals! Maestro Patrick Adams arranged and produced the set – and he gives the record a really wonderful sound that's light years from his indie club work of the early 70s – a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billie Poole

Confessin' The Blues
Riverside, 1962. Good
The title's an apt one, because Billie Poole sings here in a mode that's steeped in styles borrowed strongly from gospel and blues – but delivered more in a jazz-based mode overall! The backing here is one aspect that makes the record especially strong – a quartet with Kenny Burrell on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sticky Fingers
Rolling Stones, 1971. Very Good
Landmark work from The Rolling Stones – and a set that may well stand alongside Exile On Main Street for capturing the group at their height!
