LP, Vinyl record album

❔

One of his oft-overlooked 60's albums, and a nice batch of tracks with Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and Pat Martino on guitar. Some of the record's laid back, but some of it goes quite out, and has long tracks that let Handy wander around with nice soulful solos, while Hutcherson hits some very hard noisy notes on the vibes. Very moody, with a good mellow sound, and lots of intelligent twists and turns. Tracks include "Naima", "A Little Quiet", and "Tears Of Ole Miss (Anatomy Of A Riot)".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(360 Sound stereo pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Columbia, 1966. Very Good
Handy's really going for the college crowd here – breaking away from the modernist hardbop of his post-Mingus years, going for a melange of styles put together with a host of hipper San Francisco players that includes Jerry Hahn on guitar and Michael White on violin. There's traces of some ... LP, Vinyl record album

New Sounds
Harmony/Columbia, Early 50s. Near Mint-
A fantastic album from one of the greatest arrangers of the 50s! Pete Rugolo first came into prominence with Stan Kenton's group of the late 40s/early 50s – and he had a penchant for creating arrangements that dipped heavily into modernism, but never forgot to swing. He went on to do some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Big Fun
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
One of the great Miles 70s groove albums – an album that's often as funky as you might expect from the cover, with a sound that's gone onto become the stuff of legend over the years! The noise of previous electric sessions is nicely toned down a bit here – leaving lots more room for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Ahead
Columbia, 1957. Near Mint-
A masterful meeting of two 50s modern jazz talents – the trumpet of Miles Davis balanced with the arrangements of Gil Evans – with results that have made the album one of Miles' greatest ever! Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good+
Not to be confused with the other Monk album of the name Misterioso, this one is a live set (which is maybe why they put "recorded on tour" in the title!) – done in quartet format with Charlie Rouse, and either Larry Gales or Butch Warren on bass, and either Ben Riley or Frank ... CTI/A&M, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
An excellent little groover from that great period where CTI was affiliated with A&M, this record is the kind of pop/jazz/easy listening crossover stuff that's been such a hit with the loungecore fans over the years.
