Temporarily Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

❔

One of his oft-overlooked 60's albums, and a nice batch of tracks with Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and Pat Martino on guitar. Some of the record's laid back, but some of it goes quite out, and has long tracks that let Handy wander around with nice soulful solos, while Hutcherson hits some very hard noisy notes on the vibes. Very moody, with a good mellow sound, and lots of intelligent twists and turns. Tracks include "Naima", "A Little Quiet", and "Tears Of Ole Miss (Anatomy Of A Riot)".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Columbia, 1965. Very Good-
Incredible work from saxophonist John Handy – an extended performance from the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1965, and a set that shows that he's grown tremendously as an artist since his early recordings for Roulette! John Handy

Projections
Columbia, 1968. Very Good+
One of Handy's important mind-expanding sets from the late 60s – a classic album with his group that featured a young Michael White on violin and Mike Nock on piano. White's work on the album is especially striking – very different from many other players in jazz, using the instrument ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1966. Very Good
Handy's really going for the college crowd here – breaking away from the modernist hardbop of his post-Mingus years, going for a melange of styles put together with a host of hipper San Francisco players that includes Jerry Hahn on guitar and Michael White on violin. There's traces of some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis Trio

Upendo Ni Pamoja
Columbia, 1972. Very Good
Sublime electric work from Ramsey Lewis! Ramsey's working here with his hip 70s group that included Morris Jennings and Cleveland Eaton, and he's playing some fantastic electric piano – a blend of funky grooves and soulful spiritualism, stripped down into a sound that's one of his leanest ... Miles Davis

On The Corner
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A sublime bit of Miles Davis electric funk – one of the best-remembered electric sets from the 70s, and for good reason too! Weather Report

Weather Report (1971)
Columbia, 1971. Near Mint-
The groundbreaking first album from Weather Report – a massive session that took fusion to a whole new level for the 70s! Michel Legrand

I Love Paris
Columbia, 1954. Near Mint-
A sparkling postwar musical fantasy of Paris – one made up of a host of famous themes from French pop music of the 20th century, all set to lush string arrangements by a young Michel Legrand! The album's not as upbeat or jazzy as some of Legrand's later soundtrack work, but it's got a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

In A Silent Way
Columbia, 1969. Very Good
There's nothing "silent" here – as the album's a bold entry in the electric years of Miles Davis – one that still features contributions from Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Tony Williams – but which also expands the lineup considerably – really reaching out ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Ellington Jazz Party
Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+
Very nice work from one of Ellington's revival periods – when he was signed to Columbia in the late 50s, and recording some of the best work of his career. This set moves past the modernism of some of Duke's other sessions at the time, and offers a more straight-ahead set in true "jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Salongo
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+
A tremendous little record, and one of the funky 70s sets that Ramsey Lewis recorded with Earth Wind & Fire! Ramsey Lewis

Love Notes
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+
A great little album of mid 70s funk from Ramsey Lewis – very much in the mode of his Earth, Wind, & Fire related work – no surprise, since the album's dedicated to Charles Stepney, whose influence was such a key part of the sound of the group, and of some of Ramsey's other Kalimba-p ...
