Archie Shepp — Live In San Francisco ... CD 8.99
A great counterpart to some of Archie Shepp's studio albums for Impulse – a live date recorded in San Francisco, with a slightly freer, sharper edge! The sound is almost free at times, but always with that strong sense of focus that Archie brought to his brilliant work of the time – and the group's a well-honed ensemble who really understand each others motivations and inspirations – Roswell Rudd on trombone, Donald Garrett and Lewis Worrell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums – all almost working at an ESP level together. Shepp plays a bit of piano on the record – in sharply angular tones that are almost more modern than his tenor – and titles include "The Wedding", "Wherever June Bugs Go", and "Keep Your Heart Right".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Orange and black label stereo pressing with Van Gelder stamp – a nice copy.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Impulse, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A classic bit of avant Shepp for Impulse – recorded in the mid 60s, at the same time as the Live in San Francisco album, with the same quintet, but not issued until years later! The album is in a different vein than the San Francisco album – one that shows the band stretching out more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Emil Richards

Spirit of 1976
Impulse, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of a rare few albums issued by hip LA vibist Emil Richards as a leader – a hell of a talent who also did a lot of studio work, but one that we really love when he gets a chance to step out front and shine! The set was recorded at Donte's, a very groovy club in the city – and in ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+
Soaring and soulful work from the legendary John Coltrane – a tremendous live set that's one of his best early 60s albums! A very nice album that features sort of a "best of" sampling of Alice's solo recordings for Impulse in the immediate 5-year period after John Coltrane's death. The tracks are a lovely mix of smaller groups and larger spiritual ensembles – and players include Jimmy Garrison, Pharoah ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Ballads
Impulse, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
A perennial favorite in the John Coltrane catalog – a beautiful set of standards, handled in a warm laidback style – but which still has some of the depth of soul that John Coltrane brought to his more experimental work on Impulse Records! The album's a classic introduction to the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson

Memphis Jackson
Impulse, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
One of the grooviest albums ever from the legendary Milt Jackson – an upbeat, almost funky set of soul jazz tracks – played with some great grooves on the bottom! Shirley Scott

Queen Of The Organ
Impulse, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
Classic Hammond work from female organ legend Shirley Scott – in her best mode of the 60s! Karma
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Quite possibly the best-remembered album from Pharoah Sanders' legendary run at Impulse Records – a set that crossed over big, and sold to countless folks who might not have bought a jazz album this hip otherwise!
