Dells

LP (Item 12272) Cadet, 1973 — Condition: Very Good+
Originally: 8.99
An album of The Dells that has them moving away from their baroque soul recordings in the Chicago studios with Charles Stepney, and moving towards a sound that's both a little more rootsy (with production by Don Davis in both Muscle Shoals and Detroit), and a little more smooth (with arrangements by Wade Marcus). The tracks are nice and long, with that good mix of deep soul and easygoing songwriting that marks the best Dells recordings from the time. Cuts include "Let The Feeling Talk To You", "Don't Make Me A Storyteller", "I Hear Voices", and "I Miss You".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(In the embossed cover, with a cut corner and light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Soulful Strings

Groovin'
Cadet, 1967. Very Good+
Seminal instrumental groovers from the Chicago Chi-soul scene! This great group was led by Chess/Cadet soul arranger Richard Evans, and it featured many of the instrumentalists who made Chess records so great – like Cleveland Eaton, Charles Stepney, Morris Jennings, and Phil Upchurch. The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Nash

Teardrops In The Rain
Cadet, Early 60s/1972. Very Good+
A repackaged version of Johnny Nash's earlier Chess album – Composer's Choice – given a sexier early 70s look, clearly to cash in on his big hit at the time. The tracks are older material with a nice jazzy feel, and although the record sounds nothing like Johnny's 70s work, it is a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rotary Connection

Dinner Music
Cadet, 1969. Very Good+
Beautiful spacey soul and righteous rock/soul grooves from one of the most enigmatic groups ever to come out of the Chicago soul scene! The drummer really kicks it on this one – and more than a few cuts have a nice backbeat to them, and the record probably has a bit more of a rock feel than ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rotary Connection

Aladdin
Cadet, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
Heavenly mystical soul from Rotary Connection! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jr Walker & The All Stars

Home Cookin'
SOUL, 1968. Near Mint-
Heavy duty instrumentals from this legendary Detroit tenor giant! This album's one of Jr's best – recorded with a rawer tone than later work, almost a mixture of funky 45 and R&B grooving. Motown favorites like "Come See About Me" and "What Does It Take To Win Your ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns

Blow For Me, A Toot To You
Atlantic, 1977. Near Mint-
After Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker came head to head with James Brown in the mid 70s, they broke off and formed the Horny Horns contingent – a tight funky backing section that's featured on a number of late 70s funk sessions, and which also recorded some extremely nice numbers on their own! ... Average White Band

Feel No Fret
Atlantic, 1979. Very Good Gatefold
A great one that showcases the group's best second suit – their smooth compressed late 70s soul sound – a great evolution of their earlier groove, and one that showed them as a great mainstream soul act! The tunes are a bit mellower overall, but still have a lot of crackle and warmth ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wynonie Harris

Rock Mr Blues
King/Charly (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good+
Some of the greatest R&B work you could ever hope to buy! Wynonie Harris was one of the all-time greats – a raw, raunchy, hard-rockin singer who was getting into more trouble with the law, ladies, and booze than most 70s rock groups combined! Wynonie's songs for King are the stuff that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles

Live In Concert
ABC, 1964. Near Mint-
A classic live set from Ray Charles – one that equally showcases all the best sides of his sound in the mid 60s! The group's got a nice dose of jazz – which it shows right at the start – almost a mix of Basie swing and R&B, of the sort that Ray was sporting heavily in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

Hotter Than July
Tamla, 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold
A bit smoother than early days, but still very nice and soulful – and did we expect any less from Stevie? The record's got a nicely flanged-out soul groove – with a style that kind of expands on the vocal and keyboard production of the early 70s, taking the groove towards a sound that ... Earth Wind & Fire

Spirit
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+
