Odyssey (RCA)

LP (Item 12270) RCA, 1977 — Condition: Very Good

A crossover classic from the late 70s – a record that was born in the clubs, but bred in the mainstream – and the start of a very good relationship between Odyssey and RCA! The album will forever be known for its classic cut "Native New Yorker" – a seminal groover that balances disco rhythms with mainstream 70s soul – but overall, the record's got even more to offer than that gem – including some surprisingly well-done mellower cuts that really make great use of the vocals of Lillian and Louise Lopez. Production is by Sandy Linzer and Charles Calello – the latter of whom is clearly right at home with the groovers – and in addition to "Native New Yorker", other cuts include "Ever Lovin Sam", "You Keep Me Dancin", "Thank You God For One More Day", "Weekend Lover", "Easy Come Easy Go", and "Golden Hands".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear, aging, and a partially unglued top seam.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Carolyn Franklin

Baby Dynamite
RCA, 1969. Very Good+
Sock-hard soul from Aretha Franklin's funky sister! By the time of this album, Carolyn had spent quite a bit of time working as sort of an "understudy" to Aretha – and according to the notes on the album, written by the girls father, Reverend CL Franklin, Carolyn was being groomed ... DJ Rogers

On The Road Again
RCA, 1976. Sealed
Classic work from the great DJ Rogers – with a soaring, sweeping, righteous soul feel that reminds us of Rance Allen at his best, or of some of the smooth work of Lamont Dozier from the same time. DJ wrote, arranged, and produced all the tracks on this album, and the cuts have a slight nod ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1978. Very Good+
One of the few 70s albums from the wonderful Major Harris as a solo act – and a lesser-known set that's a great follow up to the Major's previous records for Atlantic! The vibe here is a bit less Philly, but still in that mellow grooving style that works so well for Harris' vocals – a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirelles

Happy & In Love
RCA, 1971. Very Good+
A great second chapter for The Shirelles – hardly the girl group pop they cut in the 60s, and instead a more righteous soul style for the 70s – in a mode that's like Honey Cone or Three Degrees! The backings are nice and soulful – almost funky at times – with arrangements ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1978. Very Good+
A fantastic bit of lost harmony soul from RCA – an obscure gem from the late 70s, but one that's recorded with a sweet early 70s group soul sound! Shirelles

Shirelles
RCA, 1972. Very Good
Surprisingly great later work by The Shirelles – nice and soulful, thanks to arrangements from David Van De Pitte and Wade Marcus – both of whom push the trio way past their roots, into more sophisticated group soul for the 70s! Jimmie & Vella Cameron

Jimmie & Vella
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
Obscure bit of soul from this duo who also recorded an earlier record on Imperial. The vibe is sort of a straight 70s groove, and Vella's vocals are a bit more upfront than Jimmie's. The cuts are all originals, and titles include "Rain", "Chica Boom", "Door Is Open", ... LP, Vinyl record album
