One of Eddie's groovier Varitone albums, and a record that has a very electric sound to it! At times, Eddie's electric sax is so off-beat that you'd think he was playing a synthesizer instead of a sax, but in true Harris form, he always keeps it funky, and even the weird sounds have a great groove to them. Tracks include "Space Commerical", "Funkaroma", "Happy Gemini", "Look Ahere", and "It's War". (Cover has some edge wear, a few creases, and a sticker spot.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Study In Jazz
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good-
A landmark LP by Eddie Harris – one that we go back to again and again over the years! The album shows not only the brilliance of the young Eddie Harris (a brilliance that was not easily matched later in his career), but also the brilliant way that the Chicago jazz scene of the 60's could ... In Sound
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good
We can never get enough of Eddie Harris – and a record like this is a great reason why! Despite all the many different settings Eddie worked in at Atlantic, he still always stayed true to his roots – and a record like this is a perfect example of that – no electric horn, no funk, ... Atlantic, 1968. Sealed
Great stuff from one of Eddie Harris' greatest periods! This one was cut in the late 60s – when Eddie was creating his famous electrified Varitone sound – unique among other jazz players in that it actually added a lot to Eddie's work, instead of detracted from it (as with some other ... Half & Half
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good+
One of the oddest Eddie Harris records for Vee Jay! One side's got a very young Muhal Richard Abrams doing the arrangements and playing piano, and features two great original tracks "Half & Half" and the extended "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah", which features chanting & percussion. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good+
Beautiful work from Jimmy Giuffre – and a key album in the development of his spare sound of the late 50s! The record features Jimmy on clarinet – as you'd guess by the title – but this is no hokey set of Benny Goodman or Buddy DeFranco-type tunes. Instead, Giuffre's using the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1957. Very Good
One of the great jazz sessions that Ray Charles cut towards the end of his years at Atlantic Records – a surprisingly great little album with vibist Milt Jackson! Stitt Plays Bird
Atlantic, 1963. Very Good
After years of staying free of comparisons with Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt steps confidently into a set of compositions by the late, great one – sounding really wonderful in his own interpretations of these classics! Young Ideas
Riverside, 1961. Very Good
One of the most fantastic (and most obscure) groups to come out of the East Coast in the early 60's. An amazing mix of modernist playing with a soul jazz sensibility. Featuring a very young (18) Andrew White on alto, playing with a tremendous amount of fire, and the great Walter Booker on bass. ... LP, Vinyl record album
