❔

A great later sleeper from Brian Auger – a record that's much deeper and more soulful than some of his earlier work – and done in a soaring style that's really great! Alex Lighterwood sings as much as Auger plays the keys here, but that's ok with us – because he fuses his voice very nicely with organ, electric piano, and moog – creating a spacily soulful quality that's produced with a nice flanged-out style! Some tracks are funky, others are more laidback – and the set's a great illustration of how far Auger had come in just a few years. Titles include the spacey "Thoughts From Afar", the fast-jamming "The Big Yin", a Latin-tinged instrumental "Something Out Of Nothing", plus "Future Pilot" and "Brain Damage".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

RCA, 1968. Very Good+
Groundbreaking work on vibes by Gary Burton – recorded in a setting that's live and open, yet quite groovy too! There's a rhythmic freeness that marks the set from the very first note – lessons learned from the generation of Ornette, yet taken in new direction – and definitely ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sauter-Finegan Orchestra

Under Analysis
RCA, 1957. Near Mint-
One of the best LPs by this orchestral team whose talent ranged from wildly nutty to beautifully subtle. This LP covers both territories, and includes tracks like "Chant of the Weed", "In A Mist", "Rockin Chair", and "Liza". LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Rollins

Our Man In Jazz
RCA, 1963. Very Good
One of Sonny Rollins' best albums ever, and a totally inspired, totally non-stop freewheeling live set, recorded with Don Cherry, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins! Working on long tracks in an unfettered setting, Rollins' hits one of those rare moments of genius where he can turn his solo over and ... LP, Vinyl record album

From A to Z
RCA, 1956. Very Good-
A twin-tenor classic from the team of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims – one of the duo's best-remembered albums from their 50s years at RCA – and a perfect blend of their talent for individual improvisation and unified ensemble energy! Eddie Harris

I'm Tired Of Driving
RCA, 1978. Very Good+
Less of a jazz album than some of Eddie's other records – but that's ok with us! As a soul album, the record's actually pretty darn great – arranged and produced by Richard Evans with a late Chicago soul approach that has Eddie's funky sax stepping amidst some larger orchestrations and ... RCA (Japan), 1975. Very Good
Key proof that Phil Woods kept on growing tremendously well into the 70s – pushing way past the Bird-inspired sound of his youth, into a whole new space of expression on alto sax! Woods is working here on a rare non-US date with his Japanese Rhythm Machine group – an acoustic trio that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mingus

Tijuana Moods
RCA, 1957/1962. Near Mint-
Oh how we love this album – and we think it may well be the best album ever from Charles Mingus! The set was recorded in that magical Mingus year of 1957, but oddly not released until 1962 – missing some of the initial frenzy of his discovery during the Atlantic and Columbia years. ... RCA, 1965. Near Mint-
One of the many nice sides that Hines made during the 60s, when he was being rediscovered by the labels, and touted as a traditionalist who was still working to expand his style. The group's here are nice and small, and Hines trio is augmented by either Budd Johnson or Ray Nance on most tracks. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Conte Candoli & Frank Rosolino

Conversation
RCA, 1974. Near Mint-
An excellent session cut during a stretch when the Candoli/Rosolino team were doing some of their best work – playing in Europe with a number of hip backup groups. This set features an Italian trio of Franco D'Andrea on piano, Giovanni Tomasso on bass, and Gege Munari on drums. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Macanudo
Argo, 1963. Very Good+
One of Ahmad's best albums ever – a Latin-ized set of tracks done with arrangements by Richard Evans, who really knows how to make the set groove! Ornette Coleman

Empty Foxhole
Blue Note, 1966. Very Good+
One of our favorite Ornette Coleman albums of the post-Atlantic 60s years – a set that still hangs onto some of the bold rhythmic conception of his previous records, but also points the way towards his freer jazz modes to come! The group's a trio – with really tremendous work from ... LP, Vinyl record album
