Hustlers Convention

LP (Item 12167) Douglas/United Artists, 1973 — Condition: Near Mint-
Also available
Lightnin' Rod — Hustlers Convention ... LP 11.99

Long before there was any talk of gangster rap, Jalal of the Last Poets recorded this album of gamblin', pimpin', and hard double dealin'. It's a fantastic album-long ride through the dark side of the black underworld, and is the aural equivalent of a blacksploitation flick. Music by Kool and the Gang, so you know it's got to be righteous. A classic, with cuts like "Sport", "Grit's Den", and many more.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Recent reissue. Cover has a bumped corner.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

We'll have to admit, we can't find these guys in the history books – but the record's a very nice batch of tunes with a snapping funky groove – almost in the ensemble style of the early 80s mainstream funk scene, but with some rougher edges and a deeper soul approach that set it off ... Mandrill

Solid
United Artists, 1975. Very Good+
A tasty set from Mandrill – one of their first records away from the Polydor label, but every bit as great as later efforts for that company, especially Mandrilland. Post-Polygram, but still some nice funkiness from this classic 70s group. The record's got much of the feel of their early 70s work – with lots of tasty electric keyboards, soulful percussion, and an always-driving groove. Titles include "Disco Lypso", "Honey Butt", ... LP, Vinyl record album

War did the music for this funky soundtrack to an early Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs film, and although most of the stuff on here is just typical War stuff, there's one track called "Flying Machine" that's a long funky chase scene-type track that's worth the price of the album alone!
