A sweet set of spiritual jazz funk – a gem of a set from an Ohio group of the 70s, but one that was initially only issued on CD by the Black Fire label many years later! The ensemble's led by singer/pianist Clarence Young – and has a very message-oriented approach – sort of a blend of Roy Ayers-styled jazzy soul with touches of Philly harmony groups, and a bit more of the soul jazz of the Strata East years. The group's also got a wonderful vibist – one who really makes some great Roy Ayers inflections on the best cuts – especially those with ensemble vocals.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

West End, 1981. Sealed
An undisputed classic! The funky grooves of this early 80s single by Taana make it our favorite by her – and it's a non-stop killer that's served up here in a 9 and 6 minute version. Used as the sample for "Buddy" by De La Soul, and for a whole bunch of other tracks too! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Lots of heavy bass from the young Bill Laswell – plus guitar from Mile Rodgers and Nicky Skopelitis! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Streetwise, 1983. Very Good
One of Arthur Baker's shining moments – a poppy little tune, to be sure, but with a tight electro groove that's stood up a lot more than we would have thought at the time! Not strictly Hip Hop, but definitely an '80's breakin'/electro/dance classic (like the tracks on the Tommy Boy Perfect ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

One of our favorite tracks ever from Prince – an instantly funky, instantly catchy tune that never fails to blow us away with its dexterity! The jam sounds great, even after all these years – and it's backed by a non-LP cut, "Another Lonely Christmas" – in which Prince ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

TEC, Early 80s. Very Good
A great little single on TEC – and a unique record that seems to cross east coast hip hop with GoGo percussion!
