Turtles – Live At The Domicile

CD (Item 118364) Enja/Universal (Japan), 1968 — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

A very hip little session from a young Jan Hammer – recording here with a great lesser-known German saxophonist! The session's a live date from the late 60s – recorded at the legendary Domicile nightclub in Germany, in a rolling wave of soul jazz and hardbop modes – plus a few wilder touches too! The overall feel is quite like some of the best Saba/MPS dates of the time – and Hammer has none of his later bombastic approach to the keys – and instead demonstrates a great sense of care, space, and timing in his work on both piano and Hammond. Olaf Kubler plays both tenor and soprano sax – stretching out especially nicely on the longer tracks – and the rest of the group includes George Mraz and either Cees See or Michael Dennert on drums. Titles include "Solamente", "Cork Screw", "For T", "Sangrita Con Tequila", "Let It Go", "Turtles", and "Blues For Jiri".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print, 2008 SHM-CD pressing – includes obi.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Billy Hart

Route F
Enja (Germany), 2004. Used
One of the best albums in years from drummer Billy Hart – a set that's awash in dynamic work on the drum kit, and which features a piano-less trio with some especially great tenor and soprano sax! There's a fluid, searching kind of feel going on here – one that spins out wonderfully on ... CD

Later live work from Dizzy Gillespie – working in London here with a very hip ensemble! We're not entirely sure of the date, but given the skinny ties on a few of the players, we're guessing it's from that 80s stretch when Dizzy was still going strong – working in a great mix of Latin ... CD

An unusual album from an unusual group – one that has reedman Frank Wess sounding far more introspective and personal than on some of his other material from the 70s and 80s – thanks to work from a group that also includes Roland Hanna on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Ben Riley on ... CD

Rare French jazz from the late 50s and early 60s – previously issued only as 7" eps, and finally properly issued for the first time! The standout material here is by Sonny Criss – pulled from 2 different eps issued in 1963, recorded when he'd dropped out of the LA scene, and was ... CD
