Blackbyrds — Unfinished Business ... LP 21.99

There's nothing unfinished about this business – as The Blackbyrds are at the top of their game here – working in a sweet blend of jazz, funk, and soul – all produced to perfection by their mentor Donald Byrd! The groove is quite similar to some of Byrd's best from the time – a bit fuller than the first few records by The Blackbyrds, thanks to the addition of larger horns – and put together in ways that really has them soaring towards the skies on waves or righteous soul! There's vocals on most tracks, but they really take equal place next to the group's wonderful instrumentation – especially the heady keyboards of the mighty Kevin Toney, still a key member of the combo at this point. Titles include "Party Land", "In Life", "Time Is Movin", "Lady", and "You've Got That Something".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Trip, Early 60s/Mid 70s. Very Good+ 2LP
Not "Moonshadow" stuff, but a nice compilation of early material by Patti Labelle and her first group. Lots of early girl group soul stuff here, including "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman". LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good
One of Pat Lundy's earliest recordings – done for Columbia with a mixture of uptown soul and jazz arrangements, the former handled by Bert DeCoteaux, the latter done by Ray Bryant! Can I Change My Mind
Dakar, 1969. Near Mint-
The debut album from Tyrone Davis – a supreme achievement for the Chicago soul scene of the late 60s, and a record with a sound that would set the standard for years to come! Redd Holt Unlimited

Other Side Of The Moon
Paula, 1975. Very Good+
This was Redd's second album after the breakup of the Young-Holt team – and it's also the tightest. The best cuts have this hard funk sound that features tightly stepping drums by Redd, and a classic choppy groove that's best summed up in the cut "Do It Baby", a favorite with hip ... Barrabas

Barrabas
Atco, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A mid-70s effort from Barrabas, and a set that still has the group burning along in a really great way – blending elements of soul and funk with a sharp instrumental jamming style that might have been prog in the hands of someone else, but which here keeps things grooving in a really nice way! ... Steve Cropper, Albert King, & Pops Staples

Jammed Together
Stax, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Cropper meets up with the deep soul of Pops Staples and the southern blues of Albert King – for a heavy-duty session that's clearly aimed at the crossover scene. The tracks have a nice raw electric sound – produced with that back-to-basics approach that you sometimes didn't even find ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wilson Pickett

Wicked Pickett
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint-
A breakout record that forever put Wilson Pickett at the top of the heap for mainstream 60s soul – thanks to the oft-covered, endlessly played "Mustang Sally" single that leads off the set! And although the groove established by that track helped Pickett establish an audience on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Truth!
Prestige, 1970. Very Good+
One of Houston Person's first forays into the jazz funk sound that other Prestige Records players were picking up at the time – a sweet little set with some nicely extended tunes! One of the few American albums issued by this Dutch funky flautist who cut more than his share of heavy discs on the other side of the Atlantic.
