King Size Soul

LP (Item 11807) Atco, 1967 — Condition: Very Good-
A classic King Curtis LP, and the one that includes his stellar cut "Memphis Soul Stew", a nice slow groover that has some excellent drums and basslines, and which has been sampled at least a handful of times! The other cuts are mostly covers of late 60s pop and soul tracks – like "Ode To Billie Joe", "For What It's Worth", and "I Was Made To Love Her" – but King Curtis gives them a nice hard soul groove, and the record holds up pretty well throughout.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A landmark set of grooves by this excellent Detroit group – a trio who recorded for the local indie Karen, but got a much bigger boost towards fame when their record was picked up by Atlantic! Atco, 1962. Very Good+
Sublime uptown soul from the great Ben E King – and session that has him paired with a young Claus Ogermann on arrangements! Although later a maestro of the heavy strings, at this point Ogermann's got a great little bounce in his backings – that German-trained use of the electric bass ... LP, Vinyl record album

Otis Redding

Tell The Truth
Atco, 1970. Very Good+
In the years after his death, when Otis Redding had approached near-deity status, Atlantic was digging through their vaults (recently swiped from Stax!) to find whatever they could to put together a record. Fortunately, most of the material they came up with was great – as you'll hear on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atco, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Ok, so you might be sick of hearing "Stand By Me" over and over on oldies stations, but Ben's one of the greatest soul singers of the 60s, and checking out this greatest hits set, you'll be surprised at how many great songs he sung that you might not know! Nice ones include "That's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy James & The Vagabonds

New Religion
Atco, 1967. Near Mint-
LP...$9.99 24.99
Although they were a UK soul act, Jimmy James and The Vagabonds were a perfect match for the Atlantic soul stable of the 60s. The group had a smooth group style that was partly uptown, partly northern soul – as clearly illustrated in this album, which is divided up into a "mood red: you ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Womack

Facts Of Life
United Artists, 1973. Very Good
Bobby Womack at the height of his powers – perfectly balancing southern soul roots and 70s soul polish – with an amazing sound that was unlike anyone else at the time! Hansa, 1978. Very Good- Gatefold
A nice bit of space age disco fantasy from Boney M – a set that's got a few more electronic touches than some of the group's other records, but which still continues in a straight ahead poppy vein! There's a sound here that's arguably a bit more sophisticated than before – especially ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sly & The Family Stone

Small Talk
Epic, 1974. Near Mint-
Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! The groove is really great on the set – bubbling with a more "deep down" feel than ... LP, Vinyl record album

Average White Band

Cut The Cake
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint-
If you need to own one album by Average White Band, this is it! The album features the band at their funky best – playing hard and chopping away with a strong crossover sound that put them firmly on the map during the early 70s. Loads of tight rolling basslines and hard drums – all ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Preston

Most Exciting Organ Ever
Vee Jay, 1964. Very Good-
One of Billy's best, and it's got a hard wailing raw groove that's missing from a lot of his later work! There's a very churchy sound in the organ, with all the stops open and a very large sound coming out of the speaker – and Billy wails in a manner that's similar to some of Jimmy McGriff's ...
