❔

A wonderful 70s live album from Marvin Gaye – a set that was as expansive, ambitious, and sophisticated as his studio work from the time! The album's put together almost like a 3-sided portrait of Marvin – in that it begins with a long section of current work, moves into a "fossil medley" of older hits, then returns to "now" to showcase two of his biggest his of the time. The orchestrations are sublime – wonderfully carried off in a live setting amidst some very frantic screams from the females in the audience – and Marvin's vocals are incredible too – floating out magically amidst the crowd, and easily some of his best on record from the decade. Titles include the album's hit reading of "Distant Lover" – plus "Let's Get It On", "What's Going On", "Trouble Man", "Inner City Blues", "Distant Lover", "Keep Getting It On", and "Jan". Packaged in a cool gatefold, with a die cut image of Marvin's big silver boots!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing in the die-cut gatefold cover, with surface wear and a few peeled spots. Vinyl has a short click on "Introduction".)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tamla, 1965. Very Good+
Marvin Gaye shows another wonderful side of his talents in the early Motown years – a classy, crooing approach that was perfect for this tribute to Nat King Cole! There's a great mix of jazz and soul going on here that's a bit different than some of Marvin's other Motown work of the 60s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

Hotter Than July
Tamla, 1980. Very Good+ Gatefold
A bit smoother than early days, but still very nice and soulful – and did we expect any less from Stevie? The record's got a nicely flanged-out soul groove – with a style that kind of expands on the vocal and keyboard production of the early 70s, taking the groove towards a sound that ... Marvelettes

Marvelettes
Tamla, 1967. Very Good
Classic stuff from the girls who emerged to become one of Motown's best groups of the late 60s years. The set features the group's great version of "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game", still a big cut on the Chi-town steppers scene – plus a number of other covers and lesser ... Stevie Wonder

Innervisions
Tamla, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
One of the best Stevie Wonder albums ever! Stevie's moving into god-like territory here – handling a multitude of styles, all well, and crafting some of the most sophisticated soul of his generation. Songs In The Key Of Life
Tamla, 1976. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A sweet little double LP – one that had some folks saying that Stevie should have stayed away from the "2LP syndrome", but for us a real treasure with lots of hidden gems. Besides the hits "Isn't She Lovely" and "Sir Duke", which were more than enough to carry ... LP, Vinyl record album

DJ Rogers

On The Road Again
RCA, 1976. Sealed
Classic work from the great DJ Rogers – with a soaring, sweeping, righteous soul feel that reminds us of Rance Allen at his best, or of some of the smooth work of Lamont Dozier from the same time. DJ wrote, arranged, and produced all the tracks on this album, and the cuts have a slight nod ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions

Check Out Your Mind
Curtom, 1970. Very Good+
Righteous late 60s soul from The Impressions – the group's last album with Curtis Mayfield in the lineup! The sound here follows heavily from the Young Mods and This Is My Country years – a heavier take on the trio's soul stylings than their work over at ABC in the mid 60s – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Independents

Discs Of Gold
Wand, 1974. Sealed Gatefold
Some of the best work ever by this seminal Chicago 70s soul group! The quartet features one female vocalist, and three male – two of whom, Chuck Jackson (brother of Jessie!) and Marvin Yancey, went on to transform the sound of modern soul as producer/arrangers in the mid to late 70s. Cleveland Eaton & The Garden Of Eaton

Keep Love Alive
Ovation, 1979. Very Good+
A mixture of funky jazz, soul, and disco – recorded with a host of studio players and a smooth jazzy finish. The record's trying to keep the groove going from Eaton's Instant Hip LP – which was quite a minor hit for him – and although we love the bassist as a jazz player, most of ... LP, Vinyl record album

AVI, 1979. Near Mint-
An excellent bit of spacey club grooves from the enigmatic Rinder & Lewis team! Includes the great ... LP, Vinyl record album
