Vibrations

LP (Item 11789) Mainstream, Mid 60s — Condition: Very Good-

A fantastic solo showcase for the voice of Jimmy Ricks – a singer who's perhaps known best for the deep tones he brought to The Ravens vocal group – but who sounds pretty great here on his own! The album's more jazz than soul – with Don Sebesky conducting, and using some nice jazzy currents in the arrangements – which make for a nice sort of counterpoint next to the deep, echoey style of Jimmy's singing! The whole thing's more sprightly than you might expect – especially given some of the piano and woodwind flourishes – and titles include "Girl of My Dreams", "Teach Me Tonight", "It's A Good Day", "If I Didn't Care", and "I Get The Blues When It Rains".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Soul Makossa
Mainstream, 1973. Near Mint-
A killer album of Afro Funk – with a very unusual origin! In the wake of Manu Dibango's big hit (and some kind of failure to register the copyright), many many versions of "Soul Makossa" were recorded and released, some good, some bad. This album is a good example of that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1976. Very Good
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! This Is Niecy
Columbia, 1976. Very Good
Genius work from Denice Williams – a singer who'd cracked the charts a bit as Denice Chandler, with a little girl soul sound, way back in the 60s – but who's grown up considerably by this essential 70s set! Paisley Park, 1985. Very Good Gatefold
A great lost album of 80s soul, and one of the best side projects that Prince ever worked on!
