❔
One of the best records to offer the team of alto giant Johnny Hodges and Hammond player Wild Bill Davis – not just because there's a great soul food cover on the front, but also because the group features Grant Green on guitar! The group plays a number of originals, with a solid soul jazz sound that borders on a Blue Note bag – and titles include "Wings & Things", "Dow De Dow Dow Dow", "Casanova", and "Spotted Dog".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo MGM pressing with Van Gelder stamp and deep groove. Cover has a small bottom seam split.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bill Evans & Shelly Manne

Empathy
Verve, 1962. Very Good+ Gatefold
The cover co-credits Bill Evans and Shelly Manne as the leader of the set – and that distinction's an important one – as the record has a slightly different feel than some of Bill's other 60s work for Verve! The sound is often a bit stronger, somewhat bolder – and although Manne's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz At The Philharmonic

Blues In Chicago 1955
Verve, 1955. Near Mint-
With Roy Eldridge and Dizzy Dillespie on trumpet, Flip Phillips, Lester Yong, and Illinois Jacquet on tenor, Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums. LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Hodges

Castle Rock
Verve/Norgran, 1952. Very Good+
An undisputed Verve classic, and proof that Johnny Hodges could make damn good records away from Duke Ellington! The set features a number of small groupings of Ellington players – like Al Sears, Billy Strayhorn, Lawrence Brown, and others – but the sound is quite different than with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1963. Near Mint-
A real cooker of a set – and one that features Wynton's piano over some great larger backings from Claus Ogerman! The style of the set is really wonderful – as Wynton plays with a core smaller group that includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, plus regulars Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1962. Very Good Gatefold
A great live set recorded in 1962 with some of Cal's best players in the group – pianist Lonnie Hewitt and drummer John Rae, joined by bassist Freddie Schreiber. The groove's a bit less Latin than usual, but the jazz vibe is very strong – and Tjader really shines with the local crowd ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Very Good
A laidback, late nite sort of session from trumpeter Harry Edison – one that definitely lets him play in the "sweets" style that gave him his name! The group's got an easygoing feel – Ben Webster on tenor, Oscar Peterson on piano, and Barney Kessel on guitar – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich

Original Drum Battle
Verve, 1952. Very Good+
A pretty darn great album – with a wonderful mix of JATP swing and strong-handed drumming by the leaders. The material was recorded at a Jazz At The Philharmonic show at Carnegie Hall in 1952, and although the main focus appears to be Krupa and Rich's drum work, there's actually some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Rare material from Gil Evans' short-lived time on Verve Records – recorded in the early 60s, but not issued until this 70s issue! The set features Evans at his sharpest and most modern for the time – right up their with his best Impulse Records dates too – and key soloists ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1959. Near Mint-
A late songbook entry for Oscar Peterson, and a great one too – a record that really has Peterson setting fire to a host of classic Jerome Kern compositions, in his legendary trio with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums! Thigpen's unique rhythmic conception brings a lot to the record ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd

Jazz Samba
Verve, 1962. Near Mint-
One of those records that no home should be without – not only a pivotal album in the growth of bossa nova in the 60s – but a set that also really helped set the career of tenorist Stan Getz on fire! The real credit here might almost go to guitarist Charlie Byrd – as Byrd was a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dexter Gordon

Gettin' Around
Blue Note, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A really unusual album for Dexter Gordon – one that has him working in a quintet with vibes by Bobby Hutcherson! Hutcherson's sound really transforms the session, giving it a shimmering middleground that disperses the dominance that Gordon's tenor usually has – and creating a warm, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hank Mobley

Another Workout
Blue Note, 1961/1985. Near Mint-
A rare second chapter to Mobley's famous Workout album – recorded in the early 60s, but not issued until the mid 80s – and even then, only momentarily on vinyl! The session's a great one – a quartet outing with a structure that's similar to Hank's classic Soul Station record, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
