Pointer Sisters

LP (Item 11630) Blue Thumb, 1973 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
The fantastic debut of The Pointer Sisters – an album that's a lot deeper than most of their crossover pop from years to come! At the time of the album's release, the trio were a badass group of female singers on the Bay Area scene – out to redefine the role of the girl group in soul – working not only with righteous power that was a real change from modes of the 60s – but also this trans-temporal quality that had them reaching back with ease for references from decades past, which also includes a surprising amount of jazz! The highlight here is the group's classic funky break version of Allen Toussaint's "Yes We Can Can" – and other titles include "Naked Food", "Wang Dang Doodle", "Sugar", "Pains & Tears", "Jada", "River Boulevard", and "Cloudburst".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout hole, ring wear, edge wear, and light aging.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pointer Sisters

Break Out
Planet, 1983. Near Mint-
The album's no breakout for the Pointer Sisters, as the trio were already at the top of the charts when the set was released – but the whole thing does find a great way to keep the grooves coming in the group's lasting relationship with producer Richard Perry! There's plenty of 80s elements ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pointer Sisters

Priority
Planet, 1979. Very Good
The Pointer Sisters show plenty of rockish influences here – drawing tunes from folks like Ian Hunter, Bruce Springsteen, Graham Parker, Jagger & Richards, and Robbie Robertson – and fusing their compositions with the trio's own soulful energy! Richard Perry produced, and the album' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pointer Sisters

Contact
RCA, 1985. Near Mint-
The Pointer Sisters in their slick, sultry pop soul mode of the mid 80s – at this point doing the synthesizer soul sound as well as ever – with big hooks and more subtle stylistic flourishes in the production! The Pointers were on one heck of a commercial win streak at this point, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Phil Upchurch

Darkness, Darkness
Blue Thumb, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Plenty of darkness here from Phil Upchurch – those great tones and notes he worked so well back in the 70s – all with that near-perfect quality that made him one of the most in-demand players of his day! The style here is a bit different than some of Phil's previous work in Chicago ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Thumb, 1973. Very Good+
A brilliant debut from Sylvester – quite different than his later disco and club work – although still pretty upbeat and groovy overall! The album's a really unique sort of effort – one that's unabashedly gender-bending, but also wonderfully solid from a musical perspective ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ear Wax/Wonderland, 1978. Sealed
An obscure little funky group from Flint, Michigan, one with a tight ensemble sound that's very much in the Earth Wind & Fire mode – complete with a really great horn section, plenty of bass-heavy grooves a the bottom, and a relatively spiritual feel that comes through strongly on the ... King, 1965. Very Good+
Here's where things really started getting interesting for James Brown! The album was issued right around the same time as James' single "Out Of Sight" on Smash – and like that track, "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" was one of the first to use that "instruments on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ingram

That's All!
H&L, 1977. Near Mint-
The Ingram Family tighten things up nicely with this follow-up to their first funky album – and they get a slicker sound that points the way towards their excellent modern soul sides of the 80s. Tracks are written by James, William, Butch, and John – and although the album was ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bell, 1971. Sealed Gatefold
The cover to this one has The 5th Dimension sporting some heavy-duty outfits – and the album's got an equally bold sound to match! Etta James (1973)
Chess, 1973. Very Good+
Heavy funk from the great Etta James – one of her standout classics from the later Chess years, done with a style that's completely different than her work of the 60s! The set was recorded in LA with a super-dope sound that's almost in a funky soundtrack mode – full horns, bits of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rufus featuring Chaka Khan

Rags To Rufus
ABC, 1974. Near Mint-
One of those records that everyone seemed to own, back in the day – and for good reason, too – as Rufus and Chaka have a way of opening ears of folks who dig so many different styles – from soul to rock to funk and jazz – but all with a groove that's totally their own! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Scatman Crothers

Big Ben Sings
Motown, 1973. Near Mint-
A surprisingly charming album from Scatman Crothers – recorded during his big comeback stretch in the 70s!
