Stormin'

LP (Item 11532) Tabu, 1977 — Condition: Very Good
A set that definitely lives up to its title – a stone stormer from Brainstorm – one of the tightest funky ensembles of their generation, and one of the few who could go deep while still laying down a groove! The set's got a perfect balance of modes – enough of the appeal of bigger mainstream funk acts of the time, but also some righteous undercurrents that really show the group's roots – both in the approach of the lyrics, and in the jazzy instrumentation of the backings – which often show a righteous side of the group that's mighty surprising! The record's one that just grows and grows with each new listening, and is put together with some great sharp-edged production by Jerry Peters – who has a way of showcasing all the most interesting elements, while still keeping things focused too. Titles include the classic "Wake Up & Be Somebody" and "Loving You Is Really My Game" – plus "Waiting For Someone", "We Know A Place", "Hangin' On", "Easy Thangs", and "This Must Be Heaven".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear and a trace of a sticker.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Anacostia (1978)
Tabu, 1978. Very Good+
Anacostia make the move to Tabu Records for this sweet second set – and they seem to have picked up more of a groove along the way! The same elements as before are firmly in place here – production by Charles Kipps, with supervision from Van McCoy – but the groove is a bit more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fatback

Hot Box
Spring, 1980. Very Good+
Man, it must have been something to hear this record blasting out of a boombox back in the old days – especially if it was the magenta-hued one on the cover! The groove here is strong and loud – plenty of bass and beats at the bottom, and even a few surprising early electro touches ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sly & The Family Stone

Stand!
Epic, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
Hard to find a stronger early album by Sly – as this one has him still funking hard, but also getting his soul bag together a bit more, hitting some really righteous vibes that mix together politics and partying in an incredibly seductive way. The album's filled with anthemic numbers like ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, Early 70s. Very Good
A monster set of Chicano funky grooves from LA – most of which forever transformed the sound of funk! The album includes most of the band's best cuts – like "Slippin Into Darkness", "Cisco Kid", "World Is A Ghetto", "All Day Music", "Me & ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1977. Very Good
JR's cut some records that have a rootsier feel – but this one features smooth modern arrangements and production by Phil Medley and Buddy Scott. The set begins with an uptempo clubby remake of "Taste of Honey", and also features a nicely grooving take on "Stella By ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wilson Pickett

Sound Of Wilson Pickett
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good
The sound of Wilson Pickett is the sound of soul – bursting out here proudly in a classic session that features production from Rick Hall and the Fame Studios team! The record's got a gritty, nitty kind of feel that easily makes it one of Wilson's best – and with backing that includes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Temptations

Masterpiece
Gordy, 1973. Near Mint-
They certainly got the title right on this one – because the album's an early 70s masterpiece from the Temptations – one of the last in their legendary run of records with Norman Whitfield! By this point, the group are way past simple harmony soul – and are working with Whitfield ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rickie Boger

Slow Down Baby
Muse, 1976. Near Mint-
A righteous bit of soul – one of the only non-jazz albums we've seen on the Muse label, and a really great session that reminds us of work by Alice Clark and Esther Marrow – two other overlooked 70s soul singers who also recorded for jazz labels! Rickie's got a deep soul approach to ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, Late 50s/1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
Impulse issue of one of Ra's best recordings from the late 50s – a killer early session from Sun Ra! Ra plays organ and electric piano, and the band includes Gilmore, Pat Patrick, Marshall Allen, Ronnie Boykins, Art Hoyle, Phil Cohran, and Julian Priester. The group's also got an electric ... JJ Johnson

Dial J J 5
Columbia, 1957. Near Mint-
One of JJ's best from the late 50s – a tightly crackling hardbop set, recorded very much in the manner of his classic JJ Inc album! The sound here is a bit more compact overall – with some shorter tracks that really allow Johnson to display his keen sense of economy on his horn, while ... LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Coryell

Coryell
Vanguard, 1969. Very Good+
Maybe the funkiest album that guitarist Larry Coryell ever cut – his debut as a leader, and a fuzzy, freaky set that features some massively heavy drums from the great Bernard Purdie! The set's jazz at the core, but has lots of rock elements too – including vocals from Coryell on a few ... LP, Vinyl record album

Claude Cagnasso Big Band

Five Compact
123 (France), Mid 70s. Very Good+
A strong album of funky big band tracks – hard-driving, in the tradition of the Clarke-Boland Big Band, and played with a similar style that really has some great solos riffing through the larger sound! Cagnasso leads the group – but the real stars are some of the great French players ... LP, Vinyl record album
