Blues & Roots

LP (Item 11418) Atlantic, 1960 — Condition: Near Mint-
One of Mingus' classic sessions from the middle period – a legendary blending of jazz with bluesy gospel touches, in a mode that seemed to move away from the politics of some of the late 50s years, and open up his work to a whole new audience! The band is an all-star ensemble all the way through – tentet that features Jackie McLean, Booker Ervin, John Handy, Pepper Adams, Jimmy Knepper, Willie Dennis, and Horace Parlan – cutting a line perfectly with Mingus on the album's 6 original tunes. Includes the oft-copied "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting", plus "My Jelly Roll Soul", "E's Flat Ah's Flat Too", "Moanin", and "Tensions".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Scorpio reissue.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Charles Mingus

Oh Yeah (Jazzlore)
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Quite a crazy little record from Charles Mingus – a record that fits nicely in his legacy of other recordings for Atlantic, but which has a very different approach! On this set, Mingus plays piano, and even sings a bit – using this messed-up take on blues roots, but filtered through a ... LP, Vinyl record album

A classic session of modernist jazz – and some of Mingus most groundbreaking early work! Lotus (Italy), 1969. Very Good+
A nice little live date from Mingus – a bit looser, and almost a bit rougher than some of his other work from this vintage – but in a way that makes for a continually appealing set! Charles Mingus

Tijuana Moods
RCA, 1957/1962. Near Mint-
Oh how we love this album – and we think it may well be the best album ever from Charles Mingus! The set was recorded in that magical Mingus year of 1957, but oddly not released until 1962 – missing some of the initial frenzy of his discovery during the Atlantic and Columbia years. ... Jazz Workshop, 1964. Near Mint-
A great later example of the genius of Mingus with Eric Dolphy – a performance done shortly before Dolphy left on his tragic last visit to Europe in 1964, and which features both him and Mingus at their freest together! Don't mistake the album for the similarly-titled Town Hall album on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, 1957. Near Mint-
A fantastic album – one of our favorite-ever records from Charles Mingus! The album was recorded in the same breath as his legendary works Tijuana Moods, The Clown, and Pithecanthropus Erectus – and it features the same sort of fire and emotion that made those classics so great. Art Ensemble Of Chicago

Fanfare For The Warriors
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
A beautiful little record from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – and although performed for a bigger label than some of their previous indie outings, the set may be one of the most dynamic the group ever recorded! Atlantic Records is clearly giving the group a lot of space here – as they're ... LP, Vinyl record album

Windows Opened
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good+
Herbie Mann's opening plenty of windows with this one – and plenty of doors too – really letting some new influences come to his music, thanks to the presence of Sonny Sharrock on guitar and Roy Ayers on vibes!
