Coltrane Live At Birdland

LP (Item 11402) Impulse, 1963 — Condition: Very Good+
Soaring and soulful work from the legendary John Coltrane – a tremendous live set that's one of his best early 60s albums! The groove is open and free – filled with pulsating modal rhythms, and handled with a slightly more relaxed feeling than some of Trane's studio work from the same time. The quartet features McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and Coltrane himself plays both tenor and soprano sax, the latter with an especially beautiful sound. The set kicks off with a beautifully firey reading of "Afro-Blue" – one that really opens up, and remakes the tune into one of Coltrane's most legendary recordings – and other titles include a classic reading of "Alabama", plus the titles "Your Lady" and "The Promise".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo rainbow label pressing. Cover has gloss separation on the spine, light surface wear, and a stereo sticker.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impassioned Tenor-Man
Alto, Early 60s. Very Good+

A nice selection of recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! Ballads
Impulse, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
A perennial favorite in the John Coltrane catalog – a beautiful set of standards, handled in a warm laidback style – but which still has some of the depth of soul that John Coltrane brought to his more experimental work on Impulse Records! A magnificent record from John Coltrane – one of his earliest expressions of unbridled spirituality, and a session that we've treasured for years! Prestige, 1958. Near Mint-
A mellow soulful classic by John Coltrane – and one of his best-remembered early albums for Prestige!
