James Brown — Reality ... LP 11.99

One of the last great albums from James Brown! Not as totally sublime as Payback or some of the others from the 70s – but James is still working here with Fred Wesley and Dave Matthews – and many of the cuts retain the funk of a few years past. Case in point is the sublime "Funky President" – a super-dope track that mixes politics and funk, and which is one of our favorite James Brown tracks from the 70s. Other cuts include "All For One", "Check Your Body", "Reality", and "Further Up The Road".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing. Cover has heavy edge wear, bent corners, some pen on front, and peeled patches at the botton on back.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A bomb! The title of this one says it all – a burning anthem of pride and power, issued in 1969, at the end of one of the most troubling decades in America. James Brown

It's A Mother
King, 1969. Very Good
A definite mother from James Brown – the kind of all-funky album that few of his contemporaries could ever hope to match! King, 1968. Very Good+
James' moving tribute to the late Little Willie John – a big influence, and a fellow label mate at King. There are some great deep soul tracks on here, and lots of groovy instrumentals. James Brown

Hell
Polydor, 1974. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
JB's wildest album, with a crazy cover that shows him running away from the devil, and great gatefold inner photo with him standing amidst a bunch of declarations of "Hell". The record is a double album filled with lots of different styles from James' funky bag. Nicer bits include " ... LP, Vinyl record album
King, 1967. Very Good
Raw soul, indeed – a term that could have been coined for James Brown's vocal approach, and which probably makes one of its first appearances here on a record! The album's kind of a grab bag of earlier sides that James recorded for King, but it's a perfect showcase for his amazing sound in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1972. Near Mint-
A mad mix of Latin and funky rhythms – a 70s classic from the Belgian group Chakachas! Style Council

Our Favourite Shop
Polydor (UK), 1985. Near Mint- Gatefold
A blue-eyed soul classic from the UK scene of the 80s – probably the last truly great album from The Style Council, and a great blend of 60s influences with the post-Jam sound of Paul Weller. The album's got a bit more polish than before, but still none of the too-poppy modes that would mar ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1978. Very Good
A popping funky disco album cut decades before the French would be responsible for reviving the sound of classic disco. One of Wayne Henderson's best albums as an artist from the 70s – next to countless excellent work he handled as a producer! Odetta Sings
Polydor, Early 70s. Near Mint-
