❔

One of the darkest records to ever come out of the Detroit soul scene! As you might guess from the title, the album is Funkadelic's first – and it's a swirling mass of psychedelic guitars, echoey drums, and bass-heavy riffing, all topped off by the band's harmony vocals, which sound like a perversion of the deep-Motown styles of groups like The Temptations or Undisputed Truth – taken into even headier territory! The original 5-member version of the group includes Eddie Hazel, Mickey Atkins, Tawl Ross, Bill Nelson, and Tiki Fulwood – all working here with some mindblowing George Clinton production! Tracks include classics like "I Bet You", "Mommy, What's a Funkadelic", "Music for My Mother", and "What Is Soul" – and the album's the stuff that made these guys a legend right out of the box!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(180 gram pressing on 4 Men With Beards.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Fantastic Four

Night People
Westbound, 1976. Very Good
One of their uptempo groovers from the mid 70's, with a mix of classic Detroit group soul and tighter disco sounds that were creeping into the Westbound label at the time. Kellee Patterson

Kellee
Shadybrook, 1976. Sealed
Kellee Patterson's amazing first album for the Shadybrook label – a total killer all the way through, and much harder and heavier than any of her later sides for the label! MGM, 1972. Near Mint-
Some of the warmest Memphis soul ever recorded – a really classic set from The Ovations, done in a style that's really unique! Platinum Hook

Platinum Hook
Motown, 1978. Sealed
An overlooked groover from late 70s Motown – served up on a record that might look more like a heavy metal outing, but which is tight clubby soul all the way through! Savoy, 1950s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
2LP set that brings together early R&B sides recorded for the Savoy label – not really rock and roll as the title might imply, but a good set of cuts that's sort of an overview of the label's classic hits in the pre-soul universe! Includes the sublime "Bad Boy" by The Jive ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tousan (aka Allen Toussaint)

Wild Sound Of New Orleans
RCA, 1958. Sealed
Some of the earliest work ever recorded by New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint! Tico, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A very soulful outing by this obscure Latin soul group! The record mixes heavy soul and Latin styles – with a much deeper feel than your average boogaloo album, and kind of a righteous vibe that you wouldn't expect on a Fania album from the time.
