Hot Barbeque

LP (Item 11318) Prestige, 1966 — Condition: Very Good
One of our all-time favorite albums from Brother Jack McDuff – not just for the cover (which is plenty appealing to us as BBQ fans!), but also for the tight, sharply focused grooves on the set – some of Jack's first really firey work on record! The combo here is great – with a young George Benson hard-wailing on guitar, cutting lines so fast and furious it's hard to believe – especially if you only know his later work. The legendary Joe Dukes is on drums – dancing all over the place under Brother Jack's great groovy solos – and Red Holloway completes the group on tenor sax! The title track's got a rare vocal refrain – with Jack shouting out "Hot Barbeque" over the organ – and other cuts include "Briar Patch", "Hippy Dip", "601 1/2 North Poplar", and "The Three Day Thang".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Screamin'
Prestige, 1962. Very Good+
A real killer from Brother Jack McDuff – one of his first truly great albums, and a record that has him breaking from the sleepier R&B organ sound of the 50s – into the leaner, cleaner mode of the 60s! Jack McDuff

Dynamic Jack McDuff
Prestige, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great groover from Brother Jack! Sure, the formula was initiated by matching Jimmy Smith with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Red Garland

Manteca
Prestige, 1958. Very Good
One of the best by Red Garland for Prestige – a totally cooking record that features some great added conga work from Ray Barretto! Classic Miles Davis from that pivotal year of 1954 – featuring work from 2 different sessions, both of them great! Prestige, Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Early Rollins work for Prestige – recorded between 1951 and 1954, in a variety of settings! Hampton Hawes/Freddie Redd

Piano East West
Prestige, 1952/1955. Near Mint-
A classic split album of bop piano from both coasts – kind of a double-header in jazz, and one that really packs a punch! Kenny Burrell With John Coltrane
Prestige, 1958. Near Mint-
One of our favorite Kenny Burrell albums – and a record with a much deeper feel than lots of his other work! Mercury, 1959. Near Mint-
A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles! The set was recorded in Chicago when both were stopping through the city ... LP, Vinyl record album
