European Concert

LP (Item 11288) Unique Jazz (Italy), Mid 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
A great Ornette Coleman set from the 60s – although we're not entirely sure, as the pacakge is a bit short on details! The notes on the back aren't much help either, but they do list Dewey Redman as joining Ornette on tenor and musette, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums. Forget about the details of the set, though, because the music is all you need to know. The album's a stellar live recording that has Ornette playing with a beautiful sharpness, and with a fire that sometimes is missing from his studio LPs from the time. The set list includes "Street Woman", "Song For Che", "Whom Do You Work For?", and "Written Word". Fantastic live material, and totally worth having if you're a fan of Ornette!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

WHP (Italy), 1968. Sealed
A really incredible performance from Ornette Coleman – recorded in Italy in 1968, and featuring a unique lineup that includes Ed Blackwell on drums, plus the dual basses of Charlie Haden and David Izenzon! The two-bass lineup gives the set an amazingly tight edge – with one player ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shape Of Jazz To Come
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good+
An album that certainly lives up to the promise of its title – as it's filled with amazing instrumentation, groundbreaking compositions, and a sound in jazz that few ears could imagine at the time! The groove here is extremely modal – all instruments rolling along on the same rhythmic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Love Call
Blue Note, Late 60s. Sealed
A really great late 60s session from Ornette Coleman – one that shows is increasing expansion in sounds and styles, and which also offers a bridge between avant jazz generations too! That bridge comes in the presence of Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums – a surprising ... LP, Vinyl record album

Something Else!!!!
Contemporary, 1958. Sealed
Pre-Atlantic work from Ornette Coleman – one of his first recorded statements in jazz – and one of his boldest! At some level, the complete Coleman sound isn't entirely in place here – as there's a bit of a trace of hardbop in the mix – not entirely, but just a bit. But at ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette On Tenor
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
An early standout set from Ornette Coleman – and a record that features him blowing on tenor, instead of his usual alto – as you might guess from the title! In a way, Ornette's playing on tenor is almost freer than his alto work – a bit more open-ended and exploratory, stretching ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette!
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
A stunning session by Ornette, and one that always seems to get overlooked in discussions of his albums for Atlantic! Empty Foxhole
Blue Note, 1966. Sealed
One of our favorite Ornette Coleman albums of the post-Atlantic 60s years – a set that still hangs onto some of the bold rhythmic conception of his previous records, but also points the way towards his freer jazz modes to come! The group's a trio – with really tremendous work from ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Graas

Coup De Graas
EmArcy, 1958. Near Mint-
One of the weird LPs that French Horn player John Graas made in the 50's, featuring that cumbersome instrument in a set of surprisingly light and loose jazz tracks. Graas' playing on the French Horn is a bit like Gerry Mulligan's on the baritone – that is, he takes these turns and twists ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Sketches Of Spain
Columbia, 1960. Very Good+
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Speak No Evil
Blue Note, 1966. Very Good+
An album of incredible beauty – and one of the key early sides that Shorter cut for Blue Note! Live At The Bijou
Kudu, 1977. Near Mint- 2LP
A totally great Grover Washington record – and with 25 years behind us, we really now realize how fantastic all the early Kudu sessions really were! The record was recorded live at the Bijou, and is spread out over 2 long LPs, with lots of room for tasty open-ended solos by Grover and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Sample

Carmel
ABC, 1979. Very Good+
God, we love this record – and we're not ashamed to admit it! Sure, it sold a gazillion copies – and sure, for some folks it showed the true demise of the Crusaders ensemble. But for us, it's a masterpiece of smooth fusion, and a landmark album of easy jazz that spawned countless ... LP, Vinyl record album
