Psychedelic Shack

LP (Item 11248) Gordy, 1970 — Condition: Used
Temporarily Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

A late 60s Motown classic – with a deep heavy soul sound that mixed psychedelic elements into a rolling righteous groove – with a style that was perfect for the political tenor of the times! The formula worked extremely well for The Temps, and shifted them from being just a regular Motown vocal group into a super soul power that shaped soul music heavily in the next few years. Of course, a good deal of the credit goes to producer Norman Whitfield – who's really in his element on the set, and gives the group a sublime blend of heavy bass, fuzzy guitar, and tripped-out production on the vocals. Includes the classic "Psychedelic Shack", plus "Friendship Train", "Take A Stroll Thru Your Mind", "Hum Along And Dance", and "It's Summer". (Cover has a split spine and a name in pen. Label has a sticker.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Masterpiece
Gordy, 1973. Very Good+
One of the later Norman Whitfield efforts for The Temptations – a masterpiece of baroque harmony soul, touched with bits of the righteous sound that Whitfield brought to the group a few years before. The album's very coherent, with some wonderful tracks that really build the groove nicely ... LP, Vinyl record album
Solid Rock
Gordy, 1972. Very Good- Gatefold
A masterful album of righteous trippy soul – recorded during the height of the Temptations' strong association with Norman Whitfield! The record has more than a few political/social conscience songs – like "Take A Look Around", "Stop The War Now", and "Superstar ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers
Gordy, 1968. Very Good
One of the best records Motown ever put out, and a killer soul record that's far better than any of Bobby Taylor's other LPs. The record has a classic northern soul groove played by The Vancouvers, Bobby's tight little integrated soul band – and the record just drips with soul and emotion! ... LP, Vinyl record album
Undisputed Truth
Gordy, 1971. Very Good+
A perfect example groove that got The Undisputed Truth big hit fame in the early 70s – sort of a rumbling funk, full-on approach, using male/female vocals in kind of a "wall of soul" approach. Includes the huge hit "Smiling Faces Sometimes", plus lots of covers of cool ... LP, Vinyl record album
Taylor Made Soul
Gordy, 1969. Very Good+
Although Bobby Taylor's best remembered for his raw soul sides recorded with The Vancouvers, this solo album, recorded after his one with that group, is still a pretty nice batch of tracks, with a sound that's a lot deeper than some of the other Motown albums of the time. The set's got a very nice ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cymande
Janus, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
The fantastic first album by one of the most unique funk groups of all time! Imaginations
20th Century, Mid 70s. Very Good
An excellent group soul from Chicago – and no wonder, since The Imaginations were previously Brighter Side Of Darknes, a sublime falsetto harmony group who had a huge hit in 1972 with "Love Jones". This record's very much in the vein of that song – but also features a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chess, 1974. Very Good+
An excellent set of messed-up funky soul from Etta James – one of her killer early 70s sides for Chess! The album mixes together bluesy tracks and straight ahead soul – in a hip, bad-walking style that nicely updates Etta's older style for the 70s. The set includes a great funky cut ... LP, Vinyl record album
Luther
Cotillion, 1976. Very Good
His first album, and his best! After working as the silent talent on albums by David Bowie, Gregg Diamond, and others – Luther Vandross finally got the chance to cut an album on his own, and it's incredible! The record has a perfect sound – one that verges on disco, but never falls ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1974. Sealed
A stone classic from Bobby Womack – one of those records that has all his best elements firmly in place, put forward at a level that's sophisticated and polished, yet never too commercial at all! Bobby's voices are still incredible – that raspy, personal feel that's rooted in country ... LP, Vinyl record album
Reaching For The World
ABC, 1976. Very Good
A really great post-Philly International album from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – the group's first after the departure of Teddy Pendergrass, and a set that shows them hardly missing a beat! The group are still recording at Sigma Sound, with Melvin at the production helm – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Wack Wack
Brunswick, Mid 60s. Very Good
Amazing stuff from bassist Eldee Young and drummer Isaac "Red" Holt! At the time of this release, the pair had already risen to great fame as the rhythm backing for Ramsey Lewis in his first trio – but broke out on their own as a solo act, with a real focus on rhythmic piano ...
