Amor De Gente Moca – Musicas De Antonio Carlos Jobim

LP (Item 11173) Imperial (Brazil), 1959 — Condition: Very Good-
A beautiful early showcase of the compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim – and one of the best late 50s albums from the lovely Sylvia Telles! The album's got a wonderfully gentle feel – one that's a far cry from some of the more emotive female vocal work that had come from Brazil in the 50s – and although the sound isn't fully bossa nova, it's certainly a strong precursor of the genre – arranged by Maestro Gaya with orchestrations that are as floating and dreamy as the lyrics of the tunes! Sylvia's vocals haunt the tunes in a beautifully, echoey way – as strings, vibes, and piano slip in and out to widen up the sound – and titles include"Fotografia", "Janelas Abertas", "De Voce Eu Gosto", "Discussao", "Sem Voce", and "Canta Canta Mais".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing, in the plastic outer sleeve, with surface wear & aging, discoloration from age.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Elenco (Brazil), 1965. Very Good
A beautiful album of mellow bossa tracks sung by Sylvia Telles – all written by Jobim, of course, and given a lovely and melodic touch! Sylvia's vocals are incredible – often in English on some of the tracks (the album was briefly issued in the US in the 60s), and done in a style that's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roberto Menescal

Bossa Nova
Imperial (Brazil), 1964. Very Good
Early bossa album by the man who was one of the leading instrumentalists behind many of the bossa era's best singers. The set's fairly mellow, and all instrumental. Menescal plays guitar, and other instrumentation includes vibes & piano. The tracks have a light lilting bossa feel, with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Antonio Carlos Jobim

Tom Jobim E Convidados
Philips (Brazil), 1960s/1970s/Early 80s. Near Mint-
An assortment of tracks recorded by Jobim during his classic years – featuring an assortment of "convidados", or guests, that rank among some of the best Brazilian artists of the time! The set brings together work from many corners of Jobim's work for Universal, Philips, and Verve ... LP, Vinyl record album

Emilio Santiago

Aquarela Brasileira
Som Livre (Brazil), 1988. Near Mint-
Roberto Menescal and Luis Avellar arranged and play on this record and Menescal also did the production. It is a nice record of mainly quiet ballad-type songs that seem to be weaved into medleys and are used well to show off Santiago's rich voice. The record contains some Veloso and Jobim ... Starting Point
Far Out (UK), 1975. Near Mint-
Really wonderful early work from Grupo Um – an important Brazilian combo with ties to the more experimental side of scene, including previous experience with the legendary Hermeto Pascoal! Baden Powell

Fresh Winds
United Artists, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
Very nice material recorded by Baden Powell in Paris, with backing by Paul Mauriat & His Orchestra. There's a nice organ player in the group, and his solos give the record a cool airy sound, and a nice bottom that's sometimes missing from Baden's other records. Tracks include "Choro Para ... Paramount, 1971. Very Good+
A cool change in the style of guitarist Bola Sete – a shift from the mellower, bossa-inflected styles of his 60s work on Fantasy Records – and a jauntier set of grooves overall! The instrumentation here is still mostly small combo – Bola's acoustic guitar with bass, drums, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fontana (Brazil), Early 70s. Near Mint-
Although this one seems to be a "best of" collection of tracks by Joao Gilberto – it's actually mostly a repackaged version of his stellar Joao Gilberto album for Polydor from the early 70s! If you don't know that one, it's amazing – and it features Joao singing with only ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gal Costa

Minha Voz
Polygram (Brazil), 1982. Very Good+
Great stuff from Gal – even if the record is a lot smoother than her earlier work! The record's got a light jazzy style – like a lot of Gal's other work from the time – but this actually works quite well for her lovely voice, especially on the more intimate numbers. Titles ... Odeon (Brazil), 1973. Very Good+
