Behind The 8 Ball

LP (Item 11153) Argo, 1964 — Condition: Good+

Classic hard-hitting organ jazz session by this great Chicago keyboard player, better known to the world for his two Blue Note LPs, but playing here in a style that's much more creative, and much more open-ended than on those LPs. He's got a tight trio here, with Ben White on guitar and Jerry Donavon on drums, and the group runs through a wild mix of material – from short groovers like "Tacos Joe" and "Sinnin Sam", to the extended Larry Young-ish "Song Of The Universe". The album's a classic bit of Chicago jazz, and a darn tough one to find!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Brown label Argo pressing. Cover has some wear and aging.)

Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, or have one outstanding flaw, such as a light residue, which could be difficult to clean.
  • May have marks on all parts, too many to qualify as Very Good-, or several deeper marks, but the record should still be ok for play without skips.
  • In general, this is a record that was played a fair amount, and handled without care. A typical example may be a record which has been heavily played by a DJ, and carries marks from slip cueing. Depending on the quality of the vinyl, may play with surface noise throughout.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

James Moody

James Moody (1959)
Argo, 1959. Very Good
Great work from Moody's "second phase" – the post-Overbrook time in which he picks up the flute, drops a bit of the bop style, and starts working in a much more complicated style that showed that he had a hell of a lot of room to grow as an artist! This album's Moody's second for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Illinois Jacquet

Desert Winds
Argo, 1964. Very Good
An easily-grooving set that features Illinois Jacquet blowing over small combo arrangements with Tommy Flanagan on piano and Kenny Burrell on guitar – plus some added Latin percussion from Willie Rodriguez! The presence of the Latin percussion really adds a nice element to the album – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1961. Very Good+
A classic from Stitt – cut during the underground days of the early 60s, when both he and Gene Ammons seemed to be recording for just about every jazz label around, and when they both seemed to be doing an awful lot of work in Chicago. This album was done in a flurry that Jug and Stitt cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

Hey It's James Moody
Argo, 1959. Very Good+
A magnificent little album – one of James Moody's first collaborations with arranger Tom McIntosh – one of the most sensitive jazz voices of his time. McIntosh works in a world of many tones and colors – and he really pushes Moody past straighter solo approaches, into a mode ... LP, Vinyl record album

Three Souls

Dangerous Dan Express
Argo, 1964. Very Good-
Great little bit of lost Chicago grooviness. Not only is this a fantastic record by a tight group led by the legendary reedman Sonny Cox, but the cover and title bear reference to the Dan Ryan Expressway, which ripped through the south side like a scar in the early 60's. The cover's got the band ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmad Jamal

Macanudo
Argo, 1963. Near Mint-
One of Ahmad's best albums ever – a Latin-ized set of tracks done with arrangements by Richard Evans, who really knows how to make the set groove! Ahmad's flowing piano lines come into play with lots of tight percussion and big band backing – in a way that never dampens his spirit, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1959. Very Good-
A compelling title – as the record was recorded at Nola Penthouse Studios in New York, one of the hippest places to lay down tracks at the time – but the cover shows an image of the Playboy building in Chicago, famous from the TV show Playboy's Penthouse, Hugh Hefner's first foray into ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1961. Very Good+
Not just a wonderful record for the music, but also for the classic cover image too – a photo of Ahmad Jamal's righteous night club The Alhambra – an Eastern-themed spot on Chicago's Michigan Ave, where Jamal made some incredible music for a few short years! Jamal was one of the few ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, Early 60s. Very Good
A strange one for Argo, and certainly not in keeping with their usual soul jazz roster of recordings – but also a cool moody session recorded in Scandinavia, and which features the icy piano of Rune Ofwerman, backed by a chorus of voices, for a floating dreamy sound that slightly hints at the ... Lem Winchester & The Ramsey Lewis Trio

Perform A Tribute To Clifford Brown
Argo, 1958. Very Good
The great underrated vibist Lem Winchester plays a tribute to the late Clifford Brown, along with the classic Ramsey Lewis trio, which included Eldee Young and Redd Holt. Despite the lack of an actual trumpet on the date (although the cover has a crazy image of the group standing around the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dewey Redman Quartet

Living On The Edge
Black Saint (Italy), 1989. Very Good+
The album's got a bit of an odd title – as we hardly think that Redman was living on the edge at the time – but it's also a great little set, no matter what the name! Dewey's playing in a soulful and inside mode on most tracks – working in a style that recalls some of Archie ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chancellor, 1956. Very Good
Wonderful soundtrack work by Dean Elliott – the LA bandleader who's best known for his space-age mood music albums, but who also has a really great ear for large group jazz! The album's features Dean's work for the low-budget film College Confidential – a Mamie VanDoren vehicle that ... LP, Vinyl record album
