Little Kiss In The Night

LP (Item 11093) Arista, 1978 — Condition: Near Mint-

One of our all-time favorites from the great Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong dose of fusion in the mix! The grooves here are somehow a bit sharper than the few Sidran records before – with a quality that almost reminds us of Fantasy Records soul from the mid 70s, or some of the best jazz-tinged R&B sets of the time – all linked back nicely to Ben's rootsier elements from the start. As always, Sidran's got some really top-shelf musicians on board to help him find his groove – including Phil Woods on alto sax, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and Arthur Adams on guitar – and arrangements on many numbers are by Mike Melvoin, who sounds even funkier here than we'd expect. There's a great instrumental on the set called "The Cadillac Kid", which has a nice hard fusion groove – and other cuts include "Face Your Fears", "Doing You", and "Moose The Mooch".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the lyric sleeve. Cover has a cutout mark, some light wear, and one bumped corner.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Urszula Dudziak

Midnight Rain
Arista, 1977. Near Mint-
A gem of a record from vocalist Urszula Dudziak – the closest she ever came to doing a "straight" set of vocals, but still one that lives up to her unique style! The album was produced by Michal Urbaniak with a sweet electric vibe – never too smooth or overproduced, but with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philips, Late 60s. Very Good+
Classic work from Nina Simone – and an album that definitely lives up to its title! Nina Simone certainly emerged as the high priestess of soul during her monumental stretch for Philips Records in the 60s – as she moved way past jazz, way past some of the folk she'd begun tapping into, ... Black Is The Color
Trip, Late 60s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
An obscure release by Nina – issued with no real notes, but most likely from the mid or late 60s. The work seems to be live, even though the notes seem to indicate that the album's a studio session – and Nina's working in a spare and evocative style that's very much in her best blend ... Night Mood
RCA, 1960. Very Good-
A great singer, and a real standout album that's sadly been lost beneath the shifting sands of time! Atlantic, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
The title sounds a bit ambitious, but the album's actually a great intimate date from Carmen McRae – a beautifully-recorded small combo performance – caught live at Donte's in LA, with a sound that hearkens back to some of Carmen's best work of the 50s! The format is spare and simple ... LP, Vinyl record album

ABC, Late 50s. Very Good
One of the first albums ever by this legendary jazz vocal group! Sublime work from Frankie Beverly and Maze – smooth, mellow, and perfectly put together, with a level of care and class that you'd be hard pressed to find in many of the group's contemporaries!
