Dark To Themselves

LP (Item 11060) Inner City, 1976 — Condition: Very Good+
One of Cecil Taylor's most spiritual sessions of the 70s – a live set recorded in Yugoslavia in 1976, and done with this really open sound, but one that comes as much from the horns as it does from Cecil's piano! In fact, we might well say that the horns are the best attraction here – as the record features strong tenor from a young David S Ware – as well as trumpet from Raphe Malik and alto from Jimmy Lyons – who all spin out with freewheeling creativity, alongside Taylor's bold lines on piano, and the drums of Marc Edwards. As with other Taylor albums of the time, the set's built around one long performance – of a tune entitled "Streams & Chorus Of Seed" – put together in a way that have the horns layering over one another, building up sound next to Taylor's free piano improvisations – then taking off on their own! Extremely spirited work – and a great showcase for the young Ware!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Freedom/Trio (Japan), 1966. Near Mint-
A lesser-known live set by Cecil from the 60s – recorded by Alan Bates in 1966, and featuring a quartet with Jimmy Lyons on alto, Andrew Cyrille on drums, and Alan Silva on bass. The set's pretty free overall, and features 2 long tracks – "Amplitude" and "Niggle ... LP, Vinyl record album
Freedom/Trio (Japan), 1962. Near Mint-
Amazing work from Cecil Taylor! The album's kind of a "part two" to Cecil Taylor's legendary 1962 performance at the Cafe Montmartre in Copehagen – a groundbreaking set of free jazz that not only set fire to Taylor's career, but went onto inspire a whole generation of 60s European ... Cecil Taylor

Indent
Arista, 1973/1977. Near Mint-
A beautiful solo piano set by Cecil Taylor – recorded live in Ohio in 1973, and originally released on his own small Unit Core label. The work is a perfect example of how Cecil was stretching himself at the time – working in a mode that was part free jazz, part 70s spiritualism, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cecil Taylor

Looking Ahead!
Contemporary, 1958. Very Good+
Cecil Taylor's definitely Looking Ahead here – pushing jazz piano very strongly into the 60s with his modernist tones – yet still working with a bit more restraint than in the next decade! The style here is quite unusual – and almost more fresh than the Taylor sound of later ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cecil Taylor

Silent Tongues
Arista Freedom, 1974. Near Mint-
Beautiful free-flowing work by Cecil Taylor – and a key album to document his solo piano genius in the 70s! The album's an extended live performance, recorded at Montreux in 1974 – in an open, unbridled style that really shows the open spirit in Taylor's work at the time. The set ... Dollar Brand

Ode To Duke Ellington
Inner City, 1978. Near Mint-
A warm solo piano tribute to Duke Ellington – kind of a nice "back atcha" effort from Dollar Brand, given that Duke was one of his big champions in the early years of his career! The style here is quite far from Ellingtons, even though Brand plays a few of Duke's compositions ... LP, Vinyl record album

There's nothing little about the talents of Roy Eldridge on the trumpet – as you'll hear in this hip set of tracks from the start of the 50s – material recorded in Paris with help from some great American sidemen! Half the tracks feature Roy's trumpet in a quintet with Zoot Sims on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Man-Child
Columbia, 1975. Near Mint-
Funky mid 70s Herbie Hancock – one his funkiest albums of the era! Ramsey Lewis Trio & Jean DuShon

You Better Believe Me
Argo, 1965. Very Good
A great set of soul jazz vocals from the Chicago scene – one of a few rare albums cut by singer Jean DuShon, who gets superb backing from the Ramsey Lewis trio! The group is great, and the style of the record allows for plenty of tight contributions from Eldee Young on bass and Red Holt on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1963. Very Good Gatefold
Unlike the mellower Breeze from the East LP (another Tjader "eastern" session), this one's got some very lively Latiny stuff – despite the orientalist theme of the LP. There's a monster version of Horace Silver's "Tokyo Blues", plus takes of Lalo Schifrin's "The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Mellow Madness
A&M, 1973. Very Good+
A really great, oft-overlooked album from the best period of Quincy Jones! This album is quite possibly Quincy's most farthest-reaching – as he works in an array of styles that really shows his growing genius in the studio – not just jazz and soundtrack modes, but more soul-based ones, ...
