Double LP set that brings together the complete recording sessions that went on to become Dolphy's legendary Iron Man and Conversations LPs from the mid 60's. Recorded under the guidance of producer Alan Douglas, Dolphy plays in a number of settings – from spare duets with Richard Davis, to larger groups that include Prince Lasha, Sonny Simmons, Clifford Jordan, and Bobby Hutcherson. The recordings are a seminal part of Dolphy's career, and represent the same sort of collaborative vibe that was present during his classic Out To Lunch session. Tracks include "Iron Man", "Alone Together", "Burning Spear", "Music Matador", and "Mandrake". (Cover has a cut corner.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Melvin Sparks '75
Westbound, 1975. Very Good+
A record that moves guitarist Melvin Sparks a bit more into soul territory from the funky jazz of his early 70s years – but still a heck of a great little record overall! The tracks are shorter than before and the backings are bigger – but Melvin's work on the strings still gets plenty ... LP, Vinyl record album

Inside Straight
Fantasy, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! The album's got that core groove that Axe and Cannon first crafted together at Capitol in the 60s – but the sound here has some definite 70s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Merl Saunders
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good
We have to admit we've always been somewhat dismissive of Merl Saunders 70s records, perhaps because of the hippy association we have with these bay area recordings. But ultimately there's at least a little bit of funk peeking through on any of his Fantasy recordings, which gets a nice helping ... LP, Vinyl record album
