Double LP set that brings together the complete recording sessions that went on to become Dolphy's legendary Iron Man and Conversations LPs from the mid 60's. Recorded under the guidance of producer Alan Douglas, Dolphy plays in a number of settings – from spare duets with Richard Davis, to larger groups that include Prince Lasha, Sonny Simmons, Clifford Jordan, and Bobby Hutcherson. The recordings are a seminal part of Dolphy's career, and represent the same sort of collaborative vibe that was present during his classic Out To Lunch session. Tracks include "Iron Man", "Alone Together", "Burning Spear", "Music Matador", and "Mandrake". (Cover has a cut corner.)  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Incantation
AFI/RML, 1973. Near Mint-
Obscure midwest group with Rufus Reid on bass and Art Hoyle on trumpets. There's a vague Sun Ra connection here, which mostly manifests itself in the record's cool spare spacey sound. The standout cut is "Frump Trump", which has a nice hard boogaloo sound, and a great breakbeat on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1966. Very Good
A classic collaboration between vibist Cal Tjader and Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri – a really wonderful album that bridges two different worlds of music in the 60s! Cal had always had something of a Latin bent to his music, even working for Fantasy in San Francisco a decade before – ... LP, Vinyl record album

East World (Japan), Late 70s. Near Mint-
Beautiful direct to disc session that stands as one of our favorites by trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson. He's playing here with Kenny Barron, Cecil McBee, and Billy Hart – and in a style that's typical of the warm spiritual imagination of these Japanese sessions from the 70's. The title ...
