Gittin Off

LP (Item 10834) Dakar, 1975 — Condition: Near Mint-
Tremendously tight grooves from Hamilton Bohannon – tunes that have this amazing way of wrapping together the bass, drums, and guitar – all in this fast-chugging style that's plenty funky all the way through! Bohannon was one of the most minimal of his 70s funk contemporaries – and has this way of really focusing in on one key rhythm, then rolling it out with incredible tightness – slowly changing things with some slight phase shifts in tone or timing, but always returning to the core of the tune. The approach is maybe even more striking here than on his previous records – and far grittier than on his later 70s work, too – and at some level, the vocals are almost thrown in as an afterthought, once Bo and the combo get things grooving! Titles include "Come Winter", "South Africa 76", "Feel Good At Midnight", "Gittin Off", and "I'm In Love".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original black label pressing with F/W NYC etch. Cover is bent a bit at the corners.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sidney Joe Qualls

I Enjoy Loving You
Dakar, 1974. Sealed
Classic work from this massively overlooked 70s soul singer! The set's one of a rare few albums cut by Sidney Joe Qualls – a fantastic talent who's probably better known for his work behind the scenes, and as a songwriter, than he is as a voice on his own. The session is produced with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ike Turner & The Kings Of Rhythm

Black Man's Soul
Pompeii, 1969. Very Good+
Great stuff – and one of the funkiest albums that Ike Turner ever recorded – done during a late 60s moment when his fame with Tina Turner was really on the rise – but much more like some funky 45 take on the pre-Tina work he'd been doing in the 50s! This set's a batch of obscure ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown

Popcorn
King, 1969. Good
A tremendous turning point in the career of James Brown – and an album that points the way strongly to the even deeper funk of the 70s! The album's a hard-wailing batch of instrumental tracks played by the legendary James Brown Band of the late 60s – the pre-JBs ensemble that's gone ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Chandler

Duke Of Soul
Checker, 1967. Very Good-
Fantastic bit of soul by Gene Chandler, and despite the "hit" referred to in the title, the album's a great batch of stuff that doesn't really see the light of day that often! Includes his great remake of "Rainbow", titled "Rainbow 65", and featuring some amazing live ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lorraine Ellison

Stay With Me
Warner, 1969. Very Good-
Deep deep soul from Lorraine Ellison – a record that already shows quite a bit of growth from her earlier Warner Brothers recordings – and a new sense of hipness as well! There's definitely an influence here of the sound of Stax and Atlantic Records at the end of the 60s – all ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cadet, 1973. Very Good+
Pure genius from The Dells – one of the few older vocal groups who could really change and evolve their sound – not by losing anything from their roots, and instead getting better and better with each new release! This set's a perfect example of why The Dells were the pinnacle of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye

Midnight Love
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint-
Marvin Gaye's last album ever – and a sensuous batch of grooves that almost return him to the sound of Let's Get It On! The style here is a bit more modern, but the sound is still great – a smoother approach to soul than most of Gaye's contemporaries at the time, recorded in a way that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charo

Ole Ole
Salsoul, 1979. Near Mint- Gatefold
Everybody's favorite "cuchi-cuchi" girl shows her musical side in this trashed-out Salsoul set from the end of the 70s! Charo, apart from being well-built, sensual, and not ashamed to show it, is also a pretty decent guitarist, in a Spanish/flamenco mode. She plays a bit on the album ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
An amazing double-live album that's to concert records what James Brown's Payback was to the sound of studio funk! Like that classic, this is a double-length 2LP set that really has James and the JBs stretching out and doing their thing – working here in a setting that's supposed to be the ... Marvin Gaye

I Want You
Tamla, 1976. Very Good+
An incredible record – quite possibly our favorite ever by Marvin Gaye! The album is quite unique – written by Leon Ware, and recorded in collaboration with him – done as a "suite" of tracks based on themes of passion, joy, and new love – all of which were very ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cadet, 1969. Very Good+
A fantastic funky classic from Brother Jack McDuff – a set that's a key part of his evolving style of the late 60s – as Jack leaps from straight organ jazz to a world of wonderful grooves! The set features some larger arrangements from McDuff and the great Richard Evans – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith

House Party
Blue Note, 1958. Good
One of the best hard-wailing all-star sessions that Jimmy did so well for Blue Note! The album features an amazing array of top-line players – like Tina Brooks, Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Lou Donaldson, Art Blakey, and Kenny Burrell – and they all play with Smith in differing ...
