We're A Winner

LP (Item 10712) ABC, 1968 — Condition: Very Good-

A new level of pride and power for The Impressions – as you might guess from the bold statement of the title track! It may seem hard to believe from the perspective of the 21st Century, but back in the mid 60s, a message like "We're A Winner" was quite a strong one – a new anthem of righteous identity that was one of the first truly political statements from a young Curtis Mayfield, and a great precursor of the genius to come in the 70s! But even at this early state, there's still plenty of genius going on – not just in Mayfield's sublime songwriting, but also in the harmonies of the group, and the beautiful treatment they get in the studio from arranger Johnny Pate. The album's one of their key classics from the ABC years – and titles include "We're A Winner", "Moonlight Shadows", "Nothing Can Stop Me", "I'm Gettin Ready", "Let Me Tell The World", and "Little Brown Boy".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some light seam splitting, but vinyl is nice and clean.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

One By One
ABC, 1965. Very Good
Classic 60s Impressions material, with the legendary lineup firmly in place, and the great Johnny Pate handling all arrangements – really giving them that sense of righteous power that pushed their music past a lot of the previous group soul sounds of the Chicago scene – with a ... Dells

Face To Face
ABC, 1979. Very Good+
A later effort from the Dells, cut around the time ABC was having some great luck with the Detroit soul of The Dramatics – and also recorded in Detroit, with production work by the likes of Al Perkins, Rudy Robinson, and Calvin Carter, the Dells' old boss at Vee Jay. Charles Mann

Say You Love Me Too
ABC, 1973. Near Mint-
Weird mix of Philly soul production with vocals that have more of a southern soul kind of feel to them. Charles' voice is nice and rich, and the tracks are arranged by Vince Montana & Norman Harris. Includes some nice ballads, and a few uptempo tracks, including a Philly version of Steely Dan' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Denise LaSalle

Bitch Is Bad
ABC, 1977. Near Mint-
From the title of this one, you can tell that Denise is going for a bit of late 70s Mille Jackson action – mixing the rougher styles of her roots with some more sophisticated backings – all in a proto-feminist mode that always comes out with the lady on the top! Production is by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Pate & His Orchestra

Set A Pattern
ABC, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Fantastic funky orchestral stuff from this great Chicago soul arranger! Johnny was working with The Impressions during these years, but ABC gave him a chance to cut some instrumental sides on his own – and the record's a wonderful groover with some complicated numbers that remind us a bit of ... Fresh Start

What America Needs
ABC, 1974. Very Good+
Despite the political overtones of the title, this funky rock band sticks mostly in conventional pop territory. The themes of the songs don't really belie any sort of fresh start for the USA, but the drummer's pretty tight, and he grooves it well with the guitarist on the best tracks. There's not ... Nolan
ABC, 1972. Near Mint-
An obscure one – with some very catchy LA soul grooves, and some strange Carribbean soul elements running through the mix.
