❔
Jeffrey Osborne's really emerging strongly here in the mellow soul mode – especially on the album's two great ballad cuts, "Concentrate On You" and "We Both Deserve Each Other", both of which are smooth mellow steppers with a modern soul approach that's slightly less overblown than Osborne's 80s work. Bobby Martin produced, and tracks include "Holding On", "Jam", "Don't Stop Loving Me Now", and "Let's All Live & Give Together".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(White label promo. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout hole, light wear, and a small promo sticker and index label with a name in pen in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Janet Jackson

Control
A&M, 1986. Near Mint-
The one that put Janet over the top – and a record that also set the standard for so much more soul music to come – thanks to the production efforts of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis! Brothers Johnson

Right On Time
A&M, 1977. Very Good
A funky classic from the Brothers Johnson – sweet funky soul, done with a polish few could match! The pair are still working with Quincy Jones at this point, and the record's filled with lots of tight jazzy grooves that certainly show Quincy's touch – and which set the record apart ... A&M (Japan), Late 60s. Very Good+

Esther Satterfield

Need To Be
A&M, 1976. Very Good+
Easy going soul from Esther Satterfield – a session that has some righteous undertones, but which comes off with a smooth contemporary feel overall. As with her first album, Chuck Mangione is arranging and producing – giving the whole thing a warmly jazzy feel that's similar to his own ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jesse Johnson

Shockadelica
A&M, 1986. Very Good+
An 80s funk classic from Jesse Johnson – one that features a title that was Jesse's own creation, even though Prince stole the term and recorded a song with the name for himself! Yet that hardly keeps the album from being a winner – as Johnson's very much at the top of his game here ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Magic

Magic Of The Blue
Atco, 1974. Very Good+
Was there ever a better harmony soul group than Blue Magic? Hearing a record like this, it's hard to think so – and the album's pure east coast magic all the way through! The group still manage to keep the fragile quality that made their first work so great, but they've also got a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grady Tate

Master Grady Tate
ABC, 1977. Near Mint-
Later work by Grady Tate – not as solid as his Skye albums, mostly because he seems a bit confused about which way to go with his style, going for more of an expanded soul sound than the moodier jazz one he used on earlier work. Harold Wheeler did the arrangements – and the record ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Tex

I Gotcha
Dial, 1972. Near Mint-
A pivotal album for Joe – and one in which he turned his previously mellow southern soul style into a heavier funkier sound for the 70s! Includes the title cut, which a whole generation rediscovered in Reservoir Dogs, plus "Give the Baby Anything the Baby Wants", a big sample cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shorty Long

Here Comes The Judge
SOUL, 1968. Near Mint-
A fantastic album of funky soul – and Shorty's greatest album! Well, it's actually only one of two albums he cut – and the only one that was issued before his untimely early death – but it's a killer batch of tracks that mix together funk, Detroit soul, and a great sense of humor! ... Thelma Houston

Sunshower
Dunhill, 1969. Near Mint-
A pretty darn amazing album from Thelma Houston – recorded during the zenith of Jimmy Webb's career, when Jimmy was not only one of the hippest songwriters in pop, but also kind of a mini-Burt Bacharach, writing, arranging, and conducting albums for a variety of stars. This little gem ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hesitations

Where We're At!
Kapp, Mid 60s. Sealed
Stunning group soul work by The Hesitations, the group probably best known for their hit version of "Born Free", a fantastic harmony reading of the hit tune.
