Under The Influence Of Love Unlimited

LP (Item 10691) 20th Century, 1973 — Condition: Near Mint-
Great stuff from the girls who first put Barry White on the map! The record is the group's second – and by this point, Barry had developed that tight snapping drum sound that made his orchestral albums work so well. You'll hear it to good effect on most songs on the LP, which have a great groove that's in the best Barry White mode of the 70s – but which kind of dominates the girls' vocals a bit. Not that anyone should complain that much, as it's the overall package that's always made Barry's albums sound so great – but we do wonder how the group felt when they had to sit out the first track, which was the instrumental "Love's Theme", a song that went onto become Barry's biggest song ever, and which probably sold the album a lot more than the vocal tracks. Still, you can hardly detect a note of disharmony – and the album soars from track to track, through titles like "Under The Influence Of Love", "Say It Again", "Yes, We Finally Made It", and "It May Be Winter Outside".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Younghearts

Do You Have The Time
20th Century, 1972. Near Mint-
Once a raw harmony group, the Younghearts moved into a sweeter, smoother soul vein for their 20th Century recordings, and the result is an excellent batch of modern soul tracks with a nice groove to them. This album includes their great groover "Do You Have The Time (parts 1 & 2)", ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1975. Near Mint-
A killer album of 70s New Orleans funk! Chocolate Milk were an amazing funk group in their best moments – and this album is certainly one of those moments – a blistering batch of tracks that set a whole new style for the Crescent City scene, and which showed that producers Allen ... Westbound, 1975. Near Mint-
A killer compilation – one that's every bit as wild and wooly as the famous image on the cover! The set came out in the mid 70s, and it's a perfect summation of all the greatness that Funkadelic had given the group in just a few short years – their brilliant way of blending together ... Isaac Hayes

Black Moses
Enterprise, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Baroquely beautiful work from the Stax soul master – one of Isaac Hayes' heaviest albums of the 70s – and a record so massive, they needed 2LPs to contain the whole thing! The record's a culmination of the rich, full style of soulful arranging that Hayes had pioneered in his early solo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sly & The Family Stone

Stand!
Epic, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Hard to find a stronger early album by Sly – as this one has him still funking hard, but also getting his soul bag together a bit more, hitting some really righteous vibes that mix together politics and partying in an incredibly seductive way. The album's filled with anthemic numbers like ... LP, Vinyl record album
Galaxy, 1967. Sealed
Totally rare Leon Haywood LP from the 60's, and one of the few LPs ever released by the Fantasy subsidiary of Galaxy. Every single track on here is written by Haywood, and the music's got that hard soulful edge that his stuff on the Fat Fish label did. He's playing organ on a lot of cuts, which ... Alec R Costandinos

Romeo & Juliet
Casablanca, 1977. Very Good+
Without a doubt, Alec R. Costandinos was one of the strangest disco arranger/producers of the 70s! He had a very baroque vision that took full advantage of the disco industry's heavy cash to turn out these mini disco symphonies filled with full orchestral strings, funky beats, and very high ... Earth Wind & Fire

All 'N All
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
Genius, pure genius! It was hard for Earth, Wind & Fire to go wrong at this point – and the album's a stellar blend of jazz, funk, and soul, all done in that perfect style they'd hit by the mid 70s. And even though this one was a monster album, of the type that you see in everyone's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Best Of Cal Tjader
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Cal cut so many great sides for Verve during the 60s, it's hard to imagine how anyone could come up with a "best of" – but this album fits the bill nicely, and includes a number of solid groover and Latin jazz tracks that fit just right! Includes "Sake & Greens", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Hammond Smith

What's Going On
Prestige, 1971. Very Good+
One of the most obscure Johnny Hammond records of the 70s – and a key transitional set between his 60s soul jazz years and the funky jazz he would soon record for Kudu Records with Bob James! Johnny's still handling the organ here, and he works in a great group that also includes the young ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

Blowin' The Blues Away
Blue Note, 1959. Near Mint-
A killer session from Horace Silver – a record that has the legendary Blue Note pianist working with his famous quintet that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor, Gene Taylor on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums! Jeremy Steig

This Is Jeremy Steig
Solid State, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Pure greatness from Jeremy Steig – an album of funky flute tracks that really opened up whole new possibilities for the instrument!
