Bicentennial Poet

LP (Item 10681) Philadelphia International, 1976 — Condition: Near Mint-
A weird record for Philly International to put out, and an obscure bit of righteous political poetry with funky backing, in the vein of Gil Scott-Heron, The Last Poets, or Wanda Robinson. Jean-Claude T delivers a number of short cuts like "Nude and Next To Nature", "My Moms and Me", "They Got More In The Ghetto", and "Tribute To Donald Byrd", plus a few longer tracks, like "The Resume" and "Philadelphia". Backing is by a small combo with Dexter Wansel on keyboards, and lots of heavy conga playing by Larry Washington.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Dexter Wansel

Voyager
Philadelphia International, 1978. Very Good
Dexter Wansel keeps up the space jazz funk groove that was begun on Life On Mars – with those fat, thumping bass lines, elastic lead guitar, atmospheric soul vocals and loads and loads of keys – spatial work on Rhodes, Moogs and ARPs! It's all done in a funky style not always heard on ... LP, Vinyl record album

O'Jays

Love Fever
Philadelphia International, 1985. Very Good
One of the last albums from the legendary Philly International run by the O'Jays – recorded in a style that clearly shows influences from the 80s modes of the time, but which also still lets the group sparkle nicely on trademark harmonies! Even though Love Fever starts out a bit clunky ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bunny Sigler

Keep Smilin'
Philadelphia International, 1974. Near Mint-
One of Bunny's earliest, and one of his best. Although some of the tracks have an uptempo pre-disco feel, there's none of the excesses of his later albums for Gold Mind. Instead, there's a solid Philly soul groove, and great production by Bunny, with arrangements by Norman Harris and Ronnie Baker. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes

Black & Blue
Philadelphia International, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
Classic Philly soul from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! Philadelphia International, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
A very big crossover moment for the Philly sound, and one of the biggest hits by the studio combo that drove the big Gamble/Huff hits of the 70s! Love Unlimited Orchestra

My Sweet Summer Suite
20th Century, 1976. Very Good
A wonderful album by Barry White – a bit later than some of the early 70s hits, but one of his most satisfying records overall!
