LP, Vinyl record album

An excellent one from Getz – recorded here as the lead soloist over backings composed by Eddie Sauter, designed to accompany the film Mickey One, an early directorial effort from Arthur Penn (and starring Warren Beatty as well!) The score has a very edgey quality to it, and Getz's playing is superb – a clear contrast to his breathier bossa work of the same vintage, and proof that he was growing tremendously as a player at the time. Titles include "Where I Live", "The Creature Machine", "Morning Ecstasy", "As Long As I Live", "Mickey's Theme", and "On Stage". We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Taste Of Freedom
MGM, 1970. Very Good
Massively groovy work from Monty Alexander – thanks to some hip, soulful backings from the legendary Johnny Pate! The sound here is a lot more swinging than some of Alexander's trio albums – much more of a Verve-styled session with fuller backings behind a main soloist – in this ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1962. Very Good
Maybe the most evocative title of all the Three Sounds albums of the 60s – and one that really gets at the dark beauty of the entire record! Beehive, 1978. Sealed
Fantastic small group work from tenorist Sal Nistico – and one of the few records that really finds a way to capture his genius! MGM, Late 60s. Very Good
Funky magic from maestro Johnny Pate – a record that's very much in the same spirit as his blacksploitation soundtracks for Shaft In Africa or Brother On The Run! The style here is quite similar – full orchestrations, scored by Johnny with an all-soul feel – and played by a crack ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige/Status, 1965. Good+
Nice laid-back blowing session tracks for Prestige, ostensibly led by Donald Byrd and Kenny Burrell, though the label may just have been capitalizing on their names on the cover. Blue Note, 1962. Very Good
An excellent album by this lusty tenor player – and one of the rarest Blue Notes ever! Blue Note, 1963. Very Good+
One of the raunchiest albums ever cut by organist Freddie Roach – not as high-reaching as some of his later work, but with lots of short tracks that groove with a tight jukebox organ/tenor approach! Fantasy, 1976. Very Good Gatefold
Late stuff by Cannonball, with a dope spacey electric sound, no doubt due to some very nice keyboards on the session by George Duke. The album's a bit mellower than some of the others on Fantasy, but it makes up for that with a warm snaking mellow funk groove. Brother Nat gives a helping hand on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Beehive, 1979. Sealed
A great return to form for guitarist Sal Salvador – a player who didn't always get that much time in the spotlight in the 70s, until a big wave of fresh exposure from the Beehive label! Verve, 1957. Very Good
One of the most modern performances from Verve's recording of the 1957 Newport Festival – and one of the most obscure, too! A wonderful album from Lalo Schfrin!
