Root Assumptions

LP (Item 3328) Anima, 1982 — Condition: Near Mint-
Jerome Cooper delivers two side long parts of his composition "Root Assumption", performed on balaphone, high hat and bass drum, but revealing what a deep palette of tones that small drum ensemble can produce. Underneath his free-er explorations on the balaphone he keeps a nice pulse moving on the kick and sock cymbal!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Eddie Harris

Bossa Nova
Vee Jay, 1963. Very Good
Very nice, very tight little bossa nova set by Eddie Harris from his early days at Vee Jay! The groove is very open, and Eddie's still at the stage where he can really cut the stuff. His solos ring out hard and cold above some great Lalo Schifrin arrangements, and Lalo also plays piano on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

Hard Bop
Columbia, 1956. Very Good
A killer album – one of Art Blakey's best non-Blue Note sides, and a blinding set of hard-driving jazz that well earns its title! The group is one of Blakey's pre-Timmons/Morgan/Shorter ones – with Jackie McLean on alto, Bill Hardman on trumpet, Spanky DeBrest on bass, and Sam Dockery ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pacific Jazz, 1957. Very Good
Gerry Mulligan meets up with a great array of 50s modernists here – in specially setting dedicated to all Mulligan-penned compositions! Although a radical player himself on the baritone sax, Gerry also added something strong to the 50s jazz catalog with his great tunes from the early days ... LP, Vinyl record album

Haki R Madhubuti/Afrikan Liberation Arts Ensemble

Rise Vision Comin
Rise, 1976. Sealed
A legendary album of spoken word and spiritual jazz – put together by The Institute of Positive Education in Chicago, and featuring wisdom and knowledge from the legendary Haki R Madhubuti! The album alternates shorter vocal/musical tracks with longer ones that are pure post-Coltrane jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Davis Trio

Eddie Davis Trio
Roulette, 1959. Very Good
An obscure set by Lockjaw – a recording that features his tenor backed by the Shirley Scott organ trio – with George Duvivier on bass and Art Edgehill on drums. Tracks are short, and mostly standards, but they're played with that gutbuckety sound that Davis and Scott had when working ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, Late 50s. Very Good+
One of the few rare non-trio recordings done by Powell from around this time. He plays with a trio (Paul Chambers bass, Art Taylor drums) on the whole first side of the record, but the group's then joined by Curtis Fuller for all of side 2. Fuller's deep trombone makes for a different twist, and a ... LP, Vinyl record album

JJ Johnson Quintet

JJ – In Person
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good
Hard-grooving stuff from JJ – played with a lot more bite than usual, and recorded live with a group that features Nat Adderley on cornet, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums! Tracks include "Now's The Time", "Misterioso", "Walkin", and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy McGriff

Mean Machine
Groove Merchant, 1976. Very Good Gatefold
Sweet 70s electric work from Jimmy McGriff – material that's different than his grittier grooves of the 60s, but still plenty darn great! The style's clearly influenced by CTI – as Jimmy's using electric piano as much as organ – and is getting some fuller support in the backings ... LP, Vinyl record album
Norgran, Mid 50s. Very Good
A mixture of Verve regulars and early third streamers join together in this one-off session designed as a focus on the writing talents of John Lewis. Most of the material takes off from Lewis' work with the MJQ, and the band includes two of his bandmates from that group, Connie Kay & Percy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Minnie Riperton

Perfect Angel
Epic, 1974. Very Good
Minnie Riperton's first album for Epic – and the record that broke her from a hip Chicago underground artist into one of the seventies' biggest female soul stars! The record moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stylistics

Rockin' Roll Baby
Avco, 1973. Very Good
The third album by The Stylistics – and a set that's still very much in the high-harmony territory of their first two classics! Thom Bell's still very firmly on deck this time around – arranging, producing, and writing a good deal of the material too – and the Sigma Sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Little Beaver

When Was The Last Time
Cat, 1976. Very Good
An excellent album of smooth soul tracks – very different than Little Beaver's earlier work, but every bit as great! The album's got a warm, mellow finish that's almost a maturation of the sound that Beaver first forged on his Party Down album – with plenty of his deep soul vocals and ...
