✨✧ VariousNigeria Soul Fever – Afro Funk, Disco, & Boogie – West African Disco Mayem (3LP set – with download) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $29.99 31.99
The Nigerian groove of the 70s – way past the familiar modes of Fela Kuti, and served up here in a range of artists who followed on a huge second wave of soul that soared from Lagos and beyond in the second half of the decade! The music here opens up in a sweet range of different styles – including bits of club and boogie that have come into the scene to open up Nigerian funk in more global modes for the dancefloor – blending African roots with American currents, in a sound that's completely unique – and which is way better than some of the Afro-disco modes that were coming from Europe a the time! As usual with the folks at Soul Jazz, the set's an ear-opening work of genius – from the superb track selection, to the very thorough notes and research – which really do a great job of presenting this side of Nigerian funk that's always been a bit eclipsed by some of the bigger names on the scene. Liner notes are by dancefloor historian Bill Brewster – and titles include "Do The Funkro" by Joni Haastrup, "You Can't Change A Man" by Christy Essien, "Afrikana Disco" by Akin Richards & The Executives, "Ocheche" by Don Bruce & The Anges, "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" by Tee Mac, "Get Up & Dance" by Benis Cletin, "Enoviyin" by Colomach, "Nwaeze" by Jimmy Sherry & The Musik Agents, "Wake Up Your Mind" by Joni Haastrup, "Disco Dancing" by Angela Starr, "Mr Been To" by Arakatula, "Living Every Day" by Tee Mac with Marjorie Barnes, "Wake Up Africa" by Arakatula, and "Soul Fever" by Benis Cletin. VariousThai? Dai! – The Heavier Sound Of The Luk Thung Underground ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
One of the coolest collections of underground Thai rock we've seen – and it certainly is The Heavier Sound Of the Luk Thung Underground – including a uniquely Thai vision flavored with a Black Sabbath riff, psych makeovers of Thai folklore, and a bunch great tunes that meld Bangkok life with western garage and psychedelia masterfully! All of the tunes are heavy in their own way, but it's by no means heavy in a simple hard rock way – loads of impassioned vocals, astounding percussion, tripped out guitar and other strings and woozy organ keep the arrangements exciting, and the otherworldly aspects play nice with accessible melodies. Titles include "Kuen Kuen Lueng Leung" (the aforementioned heady take on Sabbath's "Iron Man"), "Ruk Kun Samong" by Plearn Promdan, "Pai Joi" by Rung Petchburi, "Nam Mun Pang" by Sroeng Santi, "Dub Fai Kui Gun" by Sroeng Santi and more. 14 massive slabs of heavy Thai psych in all! ✨✧ Ebo TaylorLife Stories – Highlife & Afrobeat Classics 1973 to 1980 ... LP
Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great Ghana grooves from Ebo Taylor – a tremendous collection of his funkiest 70s work – and a much-needed reintroduction of his talents to the world at large! Much of the music here has strong links with more familiar Afro Funk – but the overall approach is often a bit unique, too – lots more guitar in the rhythms at times, in ways that echo the lighter lyricism of highlife, yet all without losing the commitment to bottom sounds that made 70s changes in African music so great! The package does a great job of archaeology – bringing together not just cuts recorded under Taylor's own name, but also work with other groups too – all in a set that offers plenty in the way of notes and historical details, too. 2LP set features 12 titles that include "Heaven", "Aba Yaa", "Atwer Abroba", and "Peace On Earth" by Ebo Taylor, "Tamfo Nyi Akyir" by Apagya Showband, "Ohiani Sua Efir" by Asasse Ase, "Ene Nyame Nam A Mensuor" by Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor, "Egya Edu" by Ebo Taylor & The Pelikans, and "Love & Death" by Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu. Laurie Anderson & Kronos QuartetLandfall ... LP
Nonesuch, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 29.98
A beautiful collaboration between two of the most important forces in leftfield music in the early 80s – multi-media artist Laurie Anderson and modern string legends Kronos Quartet – coming together here in an extended Anderson composition inspired by the experience of Hurricane Sandy! It's been years since we've last heard from Laurie, and she's really returned to her roots here – still using her voice a bit, but also playing violin a fair bit too, along with keyboards, samples, percussion, and lots of her unusual filters and other electronic elements. Most selections are sort, and work together beautifully – almost in territory that might be described as a string quartet take on the modes of United States. Titles include "All The Extinct Animals", "Built You A Mountain", "Darkness Falls", "Dreams Translated", "The Water Rises", "Our Street Is A Black River", "Nothing Left But Their Names", "Thunder Continues In The Aftermath", "Old Motors & Helicopters", and "Everything Is Floating". Antorcha (aka Las Antorchas)Antorcha (plus poster) ... LP
Vam (Mexico), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
A great mid 70s record by Antorcha – whose late 60s records as Las Antorchas were a great mix of styles – from beat, to garage, mod and psych – and by this point in the mid 70s, shortened their name and honed their groove into heavier, moodier style that's even better! Heavy rhythms and moody textures – with some really haunting organ grooves – and an overall vibe that's up there with some of greater underground rock around the world at the time. By this point, the band was producing and promoting themselves – and put up a number of EPs that are compiled here for this great 11 song set: with "En El Jardin Del Eden", the English-sung "Grass" and "Going Down", "La Tierra", "Crisalida", "Bracero", "Mira", Quiero Vivir" and more. Aqueduct EnsembleImprovisations On An Apricot ... LP
Last Resort (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $22.99
Aqueduct Ensemble is more of a duo than the large group you'd expect from their name – but they manage to serve up some very spacious sounds over the course of these improvised tracks! The core of the group features Stu on piano and Kit on woodwinds and electronics – acoustic elements that are often layered a bit, with currents that move far from jazz into more lyrical soundscapes – maybe somewhere in that world after the ECM experiments of the 70s, when instrumental groups from a variety of different scenes were making subtle, beautiful records like this! We might put this material somewhere in the sonic territory of Durutti Column, Penquin Cafe Orchestra, or any number of records from the Benelux scene – but there's also a more pastoral quality to the album that really gives it a special vibe. Titles include "Potter's View North", "Borrowed Sax Test", "Cut Grass 1 to 3", "In Perfect Air", and "To Close Without Saving". LP, Vinyl record album

Derek Bailey & Jamie MuirDart Drug ... LP
Incus/Honest Jons (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
One of the most obscure Derek Bailey albums from his initial early run on Incus Records – a set of duets with percussionist Jamie Muir – and a session that almost seems to unlock more percussive possibilities than usual in Bailey's style on the guitar! If the image on the cover is anything to go by, Muir must be quite dynamic in performance – although he's also one of those percussionists who's nicely on the more sensitive side of his instruments – which means that things are never too bombastic, but almost have that explosive sense of tone that Bailey can sometimes bring to his guitar. Titles include the side-long title improvisation – "Dart Drug" – plus "Carminative", "Ja Ja", and "I Soon Learned To Know This Flower Better". LP, Vinyl record album

Derek Bailey & Tristan HonsingerDuo ... LP
Incus/Honest Jons (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Some of the coolest duet recordings made by Derek Bailey in the 70s – and that's saying a lot, given his famous albums with Anthony Braxton, Hank Bennink, and others! For this seminal mid 70s set, Bailey brings his guitar to play with the mindblowing cello work of Tristan Honsinger – an artist who's clearly found a way to use the sometimes-staid instrument with all the best freedoms of the 70s European avant scene – completely unbridled as he works alongside Bailey, who also plays a 19-string guitar, as well as the very cool "cracklebox"! There's a very dark quality to the interactions, and Tristan's approach to the cello is incredible – maybe more in the mode of the violin in the hands of Billy Bang or Leroy Jenkins at times, but with an even more dynamic sense of sound. Titles include "The Visit", "Duo", "Performance", "The Shadow", and "Exits". LP, Vinyl record album

Bernard Baschet/Michel Deneuve/Alain Dumont4 Espaces Sonores ... LP
Transversales Disques (France), 1979. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99
A very cool entry in the underground legacy of 70s sound sculpture recordings – that is, recordings that were made based around the sounds created by specific objects designed to make noise! In Chicago, we had Harry Bertoia, whose creations were often designed to interact with organic forces – but the Baschet brothers in France had a more dynamic approach – one that almost had them creating these sculptures that were like Harry Partch instruments, but played in a more indirect way! The title here – four sound spaces – should give you a good idea of the vibe of the record – as there's often as much space around the sounds as the sounds themselves – with each performance utilizing the sculptures as a way to sonically explore the space in which they reside. Titles include "Resurgence", "Errance", "Iranon", and "Polykinese". LP, Vinyl record album

Franco BattiatoPollution ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Titles include "Il Silenzio Del Rumore", "31 Dicembre 1999 – Ore 9", "Beta", "Plancton", "Pollution", and "Areknames". LP, Vinyl record album

BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Bob & GeneIf This World Were Mine (with bonus tracks & download) ... LP
Modo/Daptone, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 18.99
A previously-unreleased sweet soul treasure – now finally getting its due! Bob & Gene were an obscure duo from Buffalo at the end of the 60s – recording briefly together under the guidance of Bob's father, who recorded the young pair in his home studio with the help of some great funk and soul musicians from the local scene – with a sound that's fresh, fragile, and deeply personal. Many numbers have a slow, sad quality that's right up there with some of the best harmony soul of the time – a wispy late nite kind of sound that's captured perfectly here, with just the right balance of roughness and sweet. Other numbers get a bit more upbeat, and almost a bit funky – showing the pair to have a bit more punch than some of their contemporaries, and a sometimes sunny sound that really sparkles amidst the darkness. Most of the work here was recorded in the late 60s, but never released – making this the first-ever album by the group. And as a bonus note of trivia, Bob here is none other than Bobby Nunn – who went onto record under his own name, and did a lot of great work in the LA scene of the 70s! Titles include "Gotta Find A Way", "Your Name", "It Won't Go", "I Can Be Cool", "Sailboat", "Interlude", "Which Love", "Don't Leave Me Girl", "You Gave Me Love", and a great cover of "If This World Were Mine". Braen & Raskovich (Alessandro Alessandroni/GiulianDrammatico (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Panda/Sonor (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
They're not kidding with the title of this one – as the album leaps off to a very dramatic style, right from the start – with a surprisingly noisy sound titled after the incubation of the heavens! That noise moves aside a bit as the album moves on, but the whole thing still stays very strongly in the fuzzy, freaky territory you might know from other Italian rarities issued under the name of Braen and Raskovich – which were both studio pseudonyms for Alessandro Alessandroni and Giuliano Sorgini! Yet despite the fame of both of those artists in other settings, they're very much in a different space here – not just psych-inspired sound library modes, but also pre-industrial sounds too – of a style that seems to hint at the darker depths of the British underground in the post-punk years. At times, if we told you the album was a project by Throbbing Gristle, you wouldn't be surprised – and like TG, there's some surprisingly tuneful points amidst the noisier moments. Titles include "Dispersi", "Accerchiamento", "Linea Di Resistenza", "Insidia", "Ultimo Istante", and "Avanzata". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare 60s work from Brenner's Folk – a Spanish group who later changed their name to Pic Nic, and had a lot more success in that format! The style here is a bit folksy, but also recorded with a garagey style too – a nicely dark current that makes the male singer sound especially nice, although his duets with the group's female vocalist are pretty great too. Some tunes are more straightforward, while others have some trippier guitar – and titles include "Ho Se", "Clara Lluna", "Amor Perdut", and "Daurat Oest". – a swirling blend of guitar, organ, and vocals – all served up with an earthy pre-psych sort of style! The group features one female singer, whose role would grow even more in later years, when they changed their name to Pic Nic – and the lyrics have a Catalan style 7-inch, Vinyl record

If anyone deserved the name of Miss Rhythm in the 50s, it was the great Ruth Brown – as the singer was one of the most hard-hitting, sock-solid talents around – and really helped pave the way for the deeper styles of soul to come in the 60s! This album's filled with great Atlantic Records material from Brown – and also nicely moves past the bigger hits of the period – to show Brown really mixing it up in a great way, with the sort of diversity that Etta James wouldn't find in her own career until her later move to Chess Records. Tracks include "This Little Girl's Gone Rockin", "Somebody Touched Me", "I Hope We Meet On The Road Some Day", "Why Me", "Just Too Much", "Book Of Lies", "One More Time", "Jack O Diamonds", "I Can See Everybody's Baby", and "I Can't Hear A Word You Say". Budos BandBudos Band III (includes bonus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2010. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney it backwards, kids). Strata/180 Proof, Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99 19.98
A spiritual jazz classic from Detroit – and one of the few records from this important Motor City group! The Contemporary Jazz Quintet were a groundbreaking ensemble that mixed together hardbop and modernist playing – sometimes with a keen ear for Miles Davis' experiments of the late 60s, but also with an underground Detroit flavor that's well in keeping with that city's rich traditions! The group was ostensibly led by pianist Kenny Cox – and it's his name that their two Blue Note albums were issued under – but on this rare third set from the Detroit-based Strata label, the group appears more as a larger collective with an even more freewheeling vibe – a lineup that includes Cox on piano, Charles Moore on trumpet, Leon Henderson on tenor, Ron Brooks on bass, Charles Eubanks on electric piano, and Ron English on guitar. Tracks are long, with a stretched-out pre-Bitches Brew sound – plus some freer avant jamming – and titles include "Noh Word", "Bang", "Tao", and "Nguzo Saba". LP, Vinyl record album

Cosmic/Now Again, 1974. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $49.99 55.98
An amazing package – a pair of rare avant jazz albums, presented here together! The first album is Peace In The World – maybe the only album issued under the name of Michael Cosmic – but a set that's part of a key legacy with his brother, reedman Phill Musra! The set has Cosmic in very heady territory – sounds that come from his young tenure in the AACM, his brief time with Cecil Taylor, and his budding reputation on the 70s Boston scene – where the set was recorded, and almost stands as a precursor to the rich legacy of improvisational jazz that would emerge on the New England scene for decades to come! Tracks are long and very free, but have spiritual currents too – and Cosmic is mostly on piano, with Musra on soprano sax and tenor, Leonard Brown on soprano and tenor, John Jamyll Jones on bass, Huseyin Ertunc on drums, and Eric Jackson on percussion. Titles include "We Love You Malcolm X", "Peace In The World", "Sapce On Space", and "Arabia". Next is the related album Creator Spaces, by Phill Musra – recorded at the time when he was part of the very underground Boston avant scene – a world that had a slightly different vibe than music coming from Chicago, Detroit, or New York! The album's got a spiritual avant bent – soulful at the core, with lots of references to outer space as well – and an approach that feels a lot like a classic Saturn Records session by Sun Ra, both in sound and spirit! Musra plays reeds, chimes, and percussion – and the group features some incredible sax work by Michael Cosmic, who also plays a bit of organ, again in a tripped-out, Ra-type way. Huseyin Ertunc plays percussion – very free and loose, in ways that are a great balance to the more angular lines of the reeds – and tracks include "The Creator Is So Far Out", "The Creator Spaces", "Egypt", and "Arabia". Dynamic Sounds/Soul Jazz (UK), 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 29.99
One of the hippest sets ever issued during the roots reggae wave of the 70s – and one of the most spiritual, too! The album's got a very special acoustic vibe at the core – earthy drumming that goes back to a pan-African tradition, these beautiful acoustic basslines that link the music strongly with underground jazz, and even some wicked sax and reed passages that make that link even stronger – especially when tied to the more message-oriented lyrics of the vocals! The album's hardly a straight roots album – and instead goes deep into the more spiritual side of Rastafari, with a personal, acoustic style that's instantly captivating – and which also has strong appeal to fans of other global sounds, and 70s spiritual jazz as well. A stunning classic – with tracks that include "Lock Stock & Barrel", "Selam Nna Wadada", "Tales Of Mozambique", "Let Freedom Reign", "Nigerian Reggae" and "Run One Mile". Maybe the greatest moment ever from Country Joe & The Fish – an insane blend of politics, psychedelia, rock roots, and more – all wrapped up in a nice of carnival-esque style that really lives up to the group's name! Many folks later copied the group – and others, like The Fugs, worked in somewhat similar territory – yet there's a really special sound to the group on this early set, a balance that brings more focus to otherwise trippy moments, more sense to their political agenda, and these sharp instrumental inflections that really send the whole thing home. Blues historian Samuel Charters produced, giving the record another influential quality – and titles include "The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag", "Who Am I", "Pat's Song", "Magoo", "Jam", "Eastern Song", and "Colors For Susan". The debut album from Curved Air – a group who had a decidedly different take on the proggish styles of the start of the 70s! For one thing, the group took their name from a Terry Riley tune – already showing their higher consciousness when it came to music – and the lineup also features a young Francis Monkman and Darry Way – the former an artist who'd soon do some great sound library and soundtrack work on the UK scene, the latter a violinist who'd continue to find new spaces for his instrument in years to come! The use of Way's violin is a great addition to the sound here – as he carves out these lean lines next to the more flowing vocals of singer Sonja Kristina – who's got a style that's almost a proggish adaptation of folk modes from a few years before – while the rest of the group comes in with the more expected guitar, keyboards, and drums – but almost always at a level that remains fresh and distinct. You know they have faith in the new track when they're pairing it with their own most classic track "Blue Flowers" – one of the most celebrated hip hop tracks of the late 1990s – as remixed by the great Prince Paul! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Amazing die-cut picture disc, too – with the classic original design by Pushead!)

✨✧ EquaticsDoin It!!!! ... LP
Now Again, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 20.98
Rare 70s funky soul from The Equatics – just the kind of record that keeps us digging and still excited after all these years – resurrected by the like minded diggers at Now Again! You know the kind of album we're talking about, the ones you come across with enigmatic cover art, no names on the back you recognize or even anything indicating where or when it's from. Then you take a spin and it's the real thing from the get go! The production is nice and raw but not ragged, and a funky vibe that groups today emulate but just can't recapture. This set's mid 70s R&B, mostly instrumental but with a few vocal numbers, all nicely done up in a very groovy, funky fashion. There's a couple of nice covers, like their Isaac Hayes-ish take on "Walk On By" and a nice rendition of "Ain't No Sunshine", but the rest of the set's mostly originals, like "Merry-Go-Round" and some nice raggedy instrumentals like "What They Doin?", "Santana" done up in parts 1 and 2 (maybe on a 45 somewhere. . .), "Cisco Fare" and the jazzy "The Touch Of You". Amazing! LP, Vinyl record album

Esso! Afrojam Funkbeat, 2015. New Copy ... $9.99 18.98
Sweet work from a great Chicago combo – one who go way past the usual grooves you might expect from an ensemble of this nature! Sure, these guys have "Afro" in their name, but they don't just play Fela-styled sounds – and instead step into a warm, wide range of sounds – all of which they do incredibly well! There's a touch of Brazilian elements on the guitars at points, and some deeper contemporary soul on the great vocals from Vivian Garcia – a singer who really adds a lot to the music when she steps into the spotlight – and the group even play around with some more Caribbean influences from time to time, keeping things freshly diverse, but never in a way that sounds unplanned or out of control. Titles include "La Lluvia", "Locas", "Uno Somos Todos", "Sabrosa", "Esso Strut", and "Iwbwu". LP, Vinyl record album

Gianni FerrioIo Emmanuelle (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CAM/Four Flies (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... $29.99
A really beautiful little soundtrack – and one that's quite different than all of the other late 70s scores that circulated under the Emmanuelle name! This film came out years before that big cycle of sexploitation movies – and also was not part of that series at all – and while the soundtrack certainly has some of the erotics you might expect, there's also a richer, more dynamic sonic range in place – right up there with some of the most explosive moments of genius from Gianni Ferrio at the end of the 60s! Each tune seems to have a slightly different vibe – some thoughtful, some dark and brooding, and some sweetly light – often with piano or organ, but also sometimes using a voice or chorus – but in ways that are again different than the usual, especially the more familiar Morricone/Dell'Orso style. There's a fragile sense of beauty that you'd never get in the later Emmanuelle scores – and titles include "Osmosi", "Analisi", "Contestazione", "Micropsichia", "Caos", and "Ricerca". Two fantastic tracks – both very unique! "Down Here On The Ground" isn't the 60s song of the same name – but instead an original by Keither Florence, which has these spiritual lyrics that move over slow-stepping funk – all laced together by a very cool moogy keyboard! Florence wrote the flipside – another gospel number that's got a very offbeat funky sound – and a long flute solo that introduces the tune in a really great way! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Serge Gainsbourg & Jean Claude VannierLes Chemins De Katmandou ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A lost chapter in the legendary legacy of music from the team of Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier – the pair who created Serge's fantastic Melody Nelson album, and also did the funky soundtracks for the films Cannabis, La Horse, and Sex Shop! This set is every bit as groovy as those classics, but has been lost for years – because the master tapes were reportedly lost, and have only just recently been discovered – which makes the whole thing a 21st Century treasure from these two 60s maestros! The music is great – funky at times, jazzy at others – with elements that include tablas and sitar, funky bass, fuzzy guitar, heavy drums, and sweet clavinet – all used with that mindblowing melange that Vannier could cook up in the studio – so that even some of the familiar elements come out sounding very fresh and new. The film was also issued under the names Road To Kathmandu and The Pleasure Pit – and titles include "Opium Den", "Overdose", "Flower Child", "The Pleasure Pit", "Cache Cache", "Fallen Rainbow", and the tune "Colin Maillard" – a great funky number that's done in both vocal and instrumental versions. Wonderfully free-wheeling sounds from this hip German trio – maybe not one of the biggest groups of the Krautrock generation, but one who definitely earn their name with the music on this album! The set's got a long-spun approach to the tunes, which are all quite long – layers of keyboards that include Fender Rhodes, minimoog, Hammond organ, "Lunatron", and other electronics – mixed with some slight effects, and no other instrumentation at all – which makes for a very evocative, all-instrumental blend of keyboard sounds and styles – as they spin out beautifully in ways that really build a bridge to the sky! There's nothing humdrum about Gogo Penguin at all – as the combo are out to take the sound of the piano trio into their own great directions – really bursting forth here with a sense of energy and imagination that even blow away their previous records! The group is simultaneously concerned with the wider sound of the piano – which occasionally hits waves of sound that almost feel lifted from the post-classical scene, but a lot more dynamic – while the bass and the drums really amplify their role when called up, so that the proceedings are always thrusting forward boldly – in ways that almost remind us of the excellent Indigo Jam Unit from Japan. Moserobie (Sweden), 2017. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
The Jari Haapalainen Trio has been making some really amazing music over the past few years – always on albums that have the word "fusion" in the name, but which sound completely different than any familiar fusion jazz you might know! Instead, the groove here is much more in the creative jazz spectrum we know from the Moserobie label – not free jazz or completely outside material, but instead music that pushes the boundaries while also finding its own sense of structure – balanced beautifully between the drums of Jari, the electric bass of Daniel Bingert, and the mighty tenor sax of Per Texas Johanssen! The tunes are chunky, but not in a funky way – and the boldness of the electric bass rumbles at the bottom while Haapalainen snaps a nice core on the drums, and Johanssen really takes off on his solos. Columbia/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $35.99
The landmark album from Hampton Grease Band – a group who were every bit as weird and wonderful as contemporaries like Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa – and who work here with a similar sense of wit and freeplay in their instrumentation! Given that the group originally had some blues elements in their music, there's a definite link to Beefheart – and there's a dynamism here that almost feels as if they felt like they conquered blues rock at an early age, when they were working the southern scene – then felt free to play with its elements in whatever way they wanted! Bruce Hampton's vocals are wonderful – almost as weird and skittish as sounds that would later come from the art/punk underground at the end of the decade – and titles include "Halifax", "Maria", "Evans", "Hey Old Lady & Bert's Song", and "Hendon". A great little theme song for Ernie Hawks & The Soul Investigators – a groove that's got all the biting 70s funk elements you might guess from the "Scorpio" name – but at a pace that's kind of a fast-walking sort of groove! There's fuzzy bassline that chugs along in a riffing mode, this cool watery flute line that's nice and funky, and very unusual production that really keeps things on edge! "Message Of Love" is a bit slower, but equally funky – and with lots more trippy guitar, bass, and flute! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Incredibly unique work from Panduranga Henderson – an artist who first worked as John Henderson in the group of Ray Charles, then hooked up with Alice Coltrane and had a spiritual awakening that really shaped his sound! The music here isn't at all like Charles or Coltrane – although it's informed by the same spirit as the latter – as Panduranga draws on lots of elements from Eastern thought to create the lyrics of these long songs of praise – tunes that often have currents of electro soul in the instrumentation, but which flow out in ways that have the longer-form quality you'd find in Indian vocal music. The mix is completely unique – and is surprisingly powerful, despite a relatively simple production approach. Tru Thoughts (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 21.99
A record with a sound to match its evocative title – maybe the most heady work to date from Hidden Orchestra – and that's saying a lot, given the depth of their other releases! These guys definitely take the "orchestra" in their name seriously – and while the lineup is maybe around a dozen musicians, not a hundred, the sound is very complex, and made up of a shifting array of musical elements – including piano, percussion, guitar, and lots more from leader Joe Acheson – who also uses field recordings and other sonic elements alongside the group's subtle blend of woodwinds, trumpet, and bits of strings. The latter are used very sparingly – so that most of the textures have a more organic sort of quality – and although there are lyrics, the overall sound is the most important thing – almost a 21st Century underground updating of older British lyrical landscape composition – but much hipper overall. Monk HigginsExtra Soul Perception (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Solid State/Dusty Groove, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99 28.98
One of the few albums ever issued as a leader by Monk Higgins – a genius musician/arranger who first got his start on the Chicago scene of the 60s, then moved out to the west coast at the end of the decade – where he also helped inject some funky new sounds into the Blue Note label! This set's got a vibe that echoes some of that work – particularly Monk's albums with trumpeter Blue Mitchell – but there's also maybe a loftier vibe that reflects Higgins' ties to the Chess/Cadet label, where he cut some fantastic funk singles, both under his name and with other artists too. The approach here takes a core funky jazz group and adds in just the right touches of strings – with a sound that reminds us a lot of some of the Richard Evans' genius work for Cadet, but with maybe a bit of a Cali vibe too. Monk blows tenor and plays Hammond – in a group that also features the mighty Jim Horn on flute, Alan Estes on vibes, and both Freddy Robinson and Arthur Adams on guitar. Most tunes are original, and the feel of the record is every bit as groovy as its cover – with titles that include "Sitting Duck", "Collision In Black", "Just Around The Corner", "Watermelon Man", "Straight Ahead", "Poker Chips", "Doing it To Deff", "The Look Of Slim", and "A Good Thing". Delmark, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the most dynamic, most on-fire blues albums recorded during the 60s by Delmark Records – a set that bursts right out of the Chicago clubs with the guitar of JB Hutto firmly in the lead! Hutto's a killer right from the start – singing and playing with a ferocity that easily matches, if not beats, the bigger 60s names on Chess Records – and his style of inflection leaves us wondering how often he must have to change the strings, or maybe even his entire guitar! The album's got some great help in the small combo too – with Sunnyland Slim on organ and piano, and the unlikely Maurice McIntyre on tenor sax – blowing very well in a bluesy mode, before rising to later avant territory as Kalaparusha. Titles include "If You Change Your Mind", "Speak My Mind", "What Can You Get Outside That You Can't Get At Home", "20% Alcohol", "Hip Shakin", and "Send Her Home To Me". LP, Vinyl record album

A pastiche of of styles from the late 70s and early 80s Kollywood cinema scene – amazing stuff produced and arranged by Ilaiyaraaja – music that trades as much in heavy funk as it does electronic pop! Over the span of a few decades, maestro Ilaiyaraaja recorded hundreds of scores, many under different names (or differently spelled names) in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada – Southern Indian music as relentlessly danceable as boundlessly groovy as we could have imagined. Folk soul guitar player, singer, songwriter, storyteller and genuine character Abner Jay's brilliant home recordings – the first release of his "terrible comedy blues" in far too long – courtesy of the always deep digging Mississippi label! Abner takes on the topical issues of the days with a skewed sensibility that's brilliant, and his singing, the performances and the recording quality aren't really as rough and raw as you might expect, though nowhere even close to manicured and clean sound – it's just right really for the material. Damn! The MASSIVE collaborative album from the dynamic duo of Madlib and J Dilla! Essentially, Madlib handles the production on the even numbers in the set with Dilla on the vocals, and the roles are reversed on the odd numbers. Each producer does his own thing, as only he can do it – Madlib brings the funky sampler genius – and Dilla rocks the thumping Detroit hip hop soul crunch. A number of guest rhymers step to the mic, including Talib Kweli, Percee P, Frank-N-Dank & Guilty Simpson, and the flow is seamless. Not only was this one of the best hip hop albums of '03, it also has a dyed-in-the-wool classic production style, and it sounds just as great a few years later! So very highly recommended! Fantastic work from a group who are way more than just the sum of their name! The combo is definitely jazz, only a bit rock, and really provide a funky experience on most of their numbers – in the same sort of wicked blend of acoustic and electric jazz elements that you'd find on MPS Records at the start of the 70s! The musicians here are Swiss, but come from the same mindset as that famous German label – and like some of their contemporaries across the European scene, they were young players who were really open to new ideas – which they let flow from their fingers over the course of these cool long tracks! The lineup shifts a bit over the course of these recordings, and there's some real surprises in the roster of musicians –w ith players who include Bruno Spoerri on electric tenor and sopranino sax, Dave Lee on vibes, Hans Kennel on trumpet, Christy Doran on guitar, Freddy Meier on tenor, Kenny Schmidt on drums, Hans Foletti on bass, and even a young Irene Schweizer on electric piano. One of the best collaborations between Puerto Rican bandleader Kako and swingin' Panamanian vocalist Azuquita – and one of the seminal albums from the amazing late 60s era of West Side Latino Records! The record's got a number of nice tracks written by Louie Ramirez, including a few groovy boogaloos like "Panama's Boogaloo", "Aunque No Tengo Dinero", "Shingaling Shingaling", and "Cool Jerk", which is a Latin cover of the Capitols' hit. The title track "Live it Up" is, on top of being one of the most apt titles for a record we've come across in a while, a real pounder of Latin soul track with vocals by Bobby Marin. We admire the hell out of Kassin, but it's hard to imagine that we'd relax when faced with a new record of his – as we always pay fervent attention to everything he ever does! And this time around, that attention is rewarded even more than usual – as the musician and studio genius emerges a bit more from the background than usual – finally putting his face on the cover (sort of!), and really showing off his talents as both a singer and songwriter! Yet as with all of Kassin's other work – including his famous collaborations with Domenico and Moreno Veloso, his time in Orquesta Imperial, and his projects with bigger names in Brazilian music – there's always this understated quality that makes the whole thing even more charming than if Kassin was overstating his talents. Kassin is one of the few contemporary Brazilian artists to really live up to the genius of the golden years that gave us talents like Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, or Caetano Veloso – and his sense of songwriting, presentation, and overall structure here is wonderful – making the album an instant classic in Brazilian music. Douglas, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Despite the stupid name (or perhaps because of it), this is one of the great lost sessions of the 60s! Drummer Pete LaRoca originally cut this set for the tiny Douglas label, and the session's an amazing bit of modernist jazz that features a rare non-Sun Ra appearance by tenorist John Gilmore. Gilmore's playing is fantastic, and quite different from that on some of his Ra albums – probably because the rest of the quartet features Chick Corea and Walter Booker, who groove in a very modal vein. The material's out, but not too out – and although Corea and Gilmore's solos are quite far-reaching, they also snap back nicely into the tight playing of the ensemble. And forget all of your biases against Corea – because at this young age, his playing is great! Very hard to find in this original form! Columbia/Aguirre (Italy), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
One of the rarest Steve Lacy albums of the 70s, and one of the most compelling too – as it features Steve in territory that's quite different than some of his group and solo performances of the period! The group is a trio – with Yuji Takahashi on piano and celeste, and Takehisa Kosugi on electric violin – and in addition to his usual soprano sax, Lacy also plays tenor, timpani, transistor radio, and a variety of other odd elements – as do the other two members of the group – all of which makes for a very open sense of improvisation, full of unusual sounds! Steve is far more open than usual – and if you were to hear the record without seeing his name on the front, you might be surprised that it's a Lacy album at all – which is only one more layer of the album's charm. Mainstream/We Want Sounds (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $13.99
An overlooked chapter in the Harold Land/Bobby Hutcherson partnership that recorded more famously for Blue Note – a date that's issued here under the tenorist's own name, but which also features equal contributions from Hutcherson on vibes! Tracks have that long, modal quality that has the pair almost birthing a whole new generation in jazz expression – a style that's more sophisticated than earlier soul jazz, yet equally soulful in its own sort of way – aware of all the freedoms of the avant scene, yet never fully indulgent of them – and always guided by a spirit set loose by Coltrane, but in ways that are very different than so many others in the post-Coltrane generation! Part of that difference might be Land's personal phrasing on tenor – or Hutcherson's amazing approach to vibes – both without any sort of comparison at all, and set up here in a group that features Bill Henderson on acoustic and electric piano, Buster Williams on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Mtume on congas. The latter gets his own song named on the record – the great "Mtume" – and other titles include "Short Subject", "Ode To Angela", and "De-Liberation". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the grooviest groups of the Latin Soul scene – but they'd have to be, given their name! The Latin Souls are a vocal group with a really soulful feel – a great link between the earlier harmony sounds that were bubbling under in Spanish Harlem, and some of the hipper rhythms that were hitting the scene in the late 60s – particularly the two dance modes pushed strongly in the title of the record! Many of the cuts have a nicely dark undercurrent – a bit like the best work of Ralph Robles – but the harmonies give the record a somewhat more sincere feel too, with echoes of Joe Bataan in the mix. The whole thing's great – with production from Pancho Cristal that's right up there with his other great Latin sides of the 60s. Drift (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $22.99
A great tribute to Fela Kuti from saxophonist Bukky Leo – a player with Nigerian roots, but who's been working on the London scene for decades – with music that goes back to some key early records for the Acid Jazz label, and some great releases in more recent years! Here, Leo takes on the music of the master – playing four long Fela tunes in a live setting at the Jazz Cafe – working with a tight group that's heavy on percussion, guitar, and Fender Rhodes – but who leave lots of room for Bukky's own solos, which are maybe even more of a drawing card than the name of Fela on the front! Leo's got this rich, raspy, soulful sound on tenor – one that always grabs us like Pharoah Sanders during his classic years – and which makes his solos here feel a lot more jazz-based than you might be used to hearing on an Afro Funk record. Baiano & Os Novos CaetanosBaiano & Os Novos Caetanos (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
CID/Far Out (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A very weird record – and an odd parody of both Os Novos Baianos and Caetano Veloso! The album's recorded live, and it's very much in the spirit of early work by Os Novos Baianos – with loads of tunes that have a funky samba style, with some nice rough touches – but there's also a laugh track to the set, clearly marking the record as a comedy effort! From what we know, the set's a parody of the artists named in the title, and their laidback approach to music – but since we can't really understand the lyrics, we just enjoy the grooves – as the record's got plenty of strong rootsy groovers that stand out, even if you can't get the jokes! Titles include "Ciranda", "Vo Bate Pa Tu", "Nega", "Cidadao Da Mata", "Folia De Rei", and "Dendalei". LP, Vinyl record album

Jorge BenBig Ben (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Elemental (Spain), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
Brilliant early work from Jorge Ben – a set that shouldn't be confused with the US album of the same name, and which is one of Jorge's first few gems of the 60s! The album's got Ben stepping out with a slightly jazzier feel than on his debut – a style that's still heavily steeped in the guitar-driven samba that first won him fame, but which also features a fair bit of bossa-influenced instrumentation too – bits of piano, flute, and horns that echo with some darker colors and tones that really add a lot to the tunes! The backings are never too full – nor too full of themselves – but this added level of sophistication really helps push Jorge into a range of fresh new sounds – and that's saying a lot, given how fresh his music from the time already was. Titles include "Agora Ninguem Chora Mais", "Telefone De Brotinho", "Patapatapata", "Na Bahia Tem", "Jorge Well", "Deixa O Menino Brincar", "Bom Mesmo E Amar", and "O Homem Que Matou O Homem Que Matou O Homem Mau". Binsy (Miriam Bordoni)Binsy ... LP
Phonotype/Cabiria (Italy), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A really moody little sound library record – heavy on analogue electronics, but used in ways that are nicely changed up from track to track – and quite different than the usual library album of this style! Some tracks are light and tuneful, but others are quite dark and experimental – sometimes almost verging into territory that's not too far from Throbbing Gristle, especially on one weird vocal number! Even the lighter tunes are offbeat – maybe more in the territory of early 80s German groups like Pyrolator or Der Plan – showing once again that most of the sound library scene was years ahead of its time – given the freedom they had to experiment. Titles include "Oscillazione", "Caotico", "Dinamica", "Fede", "Sereno", "Speranza", "Miraggio", and "Ricerca Chimica". LP, Vinyl record album

Art BlakeyMoanin' (75th anniversary edition) ... LP
Blue Note, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his power at this point. The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark compositions "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty", and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin". The whole album's wonderful, though, and Golson's edgey modernism adds a strong dimension to the group's usual soulful romping groove! (And in fact, as a tribute to the group's success, the album was initially named Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but quickly retitled Moanin in this version, after the big hit single!) Domino, 2018. New Copy ... On October 5, 2018
The cover of this album by Blood Orange – aka Devonte Hynes – might imply a sort of weary bleakness – but given the quality of the music, the whole thing can't help but elevate our spirits – even if Hynes is digging even deeper than usual with his subject matter! The songs are complex and extremely thoughtful – but also have this really inspired glow that instantly illuminates their beauty – sometimes in ways that are fragile, other times with a more dynamic energy. And although the set's got a host of guests – like Georgia Anne Muldrow, A$ap Rocky, Project Pat, and others – it's clear that Devonte's guiding the ship himself, with a very strong hold on the rudder, and the spirit of the music. ✨✧ Both WorldsDon'tcha Hide It ... LP
TPI, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Tripped out fusiony funk – with lots of great solo work! These guys have kind of a jazz rock approach (hence the "both worlds" name!) – one that makes for some tight bass and drum work, lots of choppy guitar, and spacey keyboards interlaced with some funkier horn solos. The production is a bit raw, which gives the record much more of an edge than you'd expect from a group like this – and even the sweeter vocal numbers come off with an honest indie feeling that makes us like them a lot. Includes the massive horn-heavy jazz dance tune "Coming On Strong", plus the cuts "Solide", "Don'tcha Hide It", "Stop Turn Around", "Leavin Them Days", "It's Love", and a cover of "Freedom Jazz Dance". Real life, self searching and personal statement making hip hop from a voice rooted in classic 90s school craft – not so much with a neo-classic sound as much as a strong commitment to beats, rhymes and life experience. Good stuff! Ornette ColemanOrnette Coleman – The Atlantic Years (10LP set – 180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic, Early 60s. New Copy 10LP ... $159.99 174.98
An incredible collection of work – music from a relatively short period in the long career of alto sax legend Ornette Coleman – but one that still may well represent his creative high point! Ornette's unusual sound and group style had already been brewing for a few years before these sides – but at Atlantic Records, the reedman really locked into gear – exploring his new sense of rhythm and timing with the legendary lineup that included Don Cherry on cornet, Ed Blackwell on drums, and Charlie Haden on bass – a group that many still try to rival all these many decades later! The core combo are at the heart of most of the records here – which also include later Atlantic issues of recordings from the sessions of the early 60s albums – but Coleman also explodes on tenor on one record, and launches into his album-length improvisation on the Free Jazz classic – an album that gave a name to a genre to come. The box features the full albums Shape Of Jazz To Come, Change Of The Century, This Is Our Music, Free Jazz, Ornette, Ornette On Tenor, The Art Of The Improvisers, Twins, To Whom Keeps A Record, and The Ornette Coleman Legacy – the last of which features rare recordings, on vinyl for the first time. All albums are on 180 gram vinyl, with vintage-style tip-on jackets – and the whole thing is beautifully put together. LP, Vinyl record album

Finders Keepers (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (pic cover)... $13.99
You might know the DeAngelis name from other funky Italian work of the 70s – thanks to the soundtrack genius of Guido & Maurizio DeAngelis – but this DeAngelis is their sister Emma, who had a much shorter career – but one that was equally groovy overall! The set begins with the funk monster "Forgiveness" – a track that has to hardly ask for its title, as any funk fan would be grateful to have this gem in their collection – thanks to romping drums and some wickedly funky guitar! "Trip" is moodier – kind of a slow-building number with mellow piano tripping over keyboard waves that flow up and down – with a real superdope vibe overall! "Plankton" is still funky, but very trippy too – loose string plucking that almost feels more like piano strings being strummed than a guitar, but with these slow waves of sound that are mighty nice! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
One of the most unique albums on the Strata East label – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the creative energies flowing through that legendary jazz outlet! Descendents Of Mike & Phoebe is a righteous little project put together by Spike Lee's father, Bill Lee, and his brothers and sisters (Cliff Lee, Grace Lee Mims, and Consuela Lee Moorhead) – working here in a group named after their slave ancestors, who are paid tribute in a beautifully flowing batch of tunes! Lee's round, warm bass tones are firmly at the head of the group on most numbers – recorded at a similar level to his excellent work with Clifford Jordan on Strata East during the same time – and other instrumentation includes piano from Consuela, flugelhorn from Cliff, and percussion from Sonny Brown and Billy Higgins – all used in a wonderfully evocative style that's even better than some of Lee's later soundtrack work. A few numbers feature vocals from Grace – singing wordlessly and with a really heavenly sort of quality – and together, the whole group have a undeniable sense of power and majesty, yet also one that's touched by a really personal sense of poetry too. Titles include a great version of Lee's "Coltrane", which was more famously recorded with Clifford Jordan – plus "Chick Chick", "Attica", "Too Little, Too Late", "Boll Weevil", "Don't Be A Stranger", and "Well Done, Weldon". Ted DicksVirgin Witch ... LP
Trunk (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $24.99
A fantastic score for the obscure British sexploitation film Virgin Witch – and, like so many musical moments of the genre, a set that's maybe far more fantastic than the images for which it was created! Ted Dicks maybe isn't the best known name in British film scoring – although he did do some great work for the Carry On side of the scene – but he's really shining strongly here, with a range of slinky, almost easygoing themes – which then give way to some starker, darker moments – but all without ever losing any of the charm! The balance maybe evokes some of our favorite groovy Italian work of the period, even though the execution is very different – and very much Dicks' own musical vision. Keyboards and piano figure heavy in the instrumentation, as does earthy percussion – but there's also a great sense of arrangement and production that gives the whole thing a shimmery, watery sort of vibe that's totally great! A deep soul treasure! You've probably never heard of the team of Eddie & Ernie, but they've risen to fame over the years with collectors of rare 60s soul – and have recently been immortalized on volumes of Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures, one of the most important soul compilation series to come out in the past few decades! In fact, Eddie & Ernie were so "lost" for years, this album marks their first-ever full length set on vinyl – long overdue, given that they were recording in the 60s and early 70s – both as Eddie and Ernie, and under the names Phoenix Express, The New Bloods, and Little Worley & The Drops. The duo have a brilliant blend of deep and sweet soul that makes us wonder why these guys were never bigger than they were – and think of the set as the same as finding a stash of some of the best 60s soul singles you could hope to hear. The group's got all the collaborative spirit of the latter reference – a largeish ensemble made up of some of the city's most important avant musicians in recent years – including Nicole Mitchell on flute, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Abrams on acoustic bass, Matt Bauder on clarinet and tenor, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, and Mike Reed and John Herndon on drums – all players who know each others strengths through countless gigs together – coming together under the visionary leadership of Rob Mazurek on cornet. There's some slight electro-acoustic elements, which further complicate the sound of the record – but all without ever taking it off base – and the whole thing's got a righteous sort of energy that makes us mighty proud that sounds this great came from our hometown. Spacious fusion from Extra Ball – one of Poland's best electric jazz ensembles of the late 70s, working here in a style that's dynamic, yet not as overly jamming as some of the group's rock-influenced contemporaries on the European scene! Leader of the group Jaroslaw Smietana plays guitar with a warmly chromatic mode – a sound that's somewhere in the vast space between Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny, and which seems able to traverse that distance with ease as the tunes roll on. Other instrumentation includes electric piano, bass, drums, and some especially great work on saxes from Andrzej Olejniczak – whose tone here really grounds the record and gives it its best soulful moments. A strange name but an excellent group – one headed up by guitarist Jaroslaw Smietana, playing here with a free-flowing vibe we really like! The album's got kind of a modal approach to fusion overall – one that's never overly jamming, and more concerned with the rhythmic progression of the tracks – making it a super-appealing album to our groove-tuned ears. Instrumentation includes a fair bit of electric keys alongside the guitar lines, plus trumpet, trombone, and some nicely soaring reed work on tenor, soprano, and flute. There's a great structure to the album too, one that really keeps things fresh – as longer tracks are juxtaposed with shorter numbers that set the mood from tune to tune, making for a well-rounded album that has a tremendous amount of depth. Unpretentiously excellent beatcraft from Chicago's Fess Grandiose – it's NOT all in the name, Fess delivers an instrumentals LP that's great in ways that are understated and easygoing rather than lofty or bombastic – and mesmerizing all the way. Fess is a veteran of the Chicago live beat scene, hosting and playing at showcases and residencies in clubs and house parties that thrive on spontaneity. Crafting album length listening experiences is such a different game than playing to the heads in the room, it's really impressive how solidly Fess succeeds in both realms. He builds up from a compelling beat, often with a bit soul jazzy keyboard atmosphere and subtle vocal samples, from there taking things wherever he wants to go, be it minimalist head nodding instrumental hip hop or a looser, kind of dreamier vibe. Impressive stuff! You may not be able to say his name that easily, but you'll definitely be singing the praises of Gokcen Kaynatan after you hear this groovy little record – a totally amazing bit of moogy electronics recorded on the Turkish scene in the 60s and 70s! There's plenty of guitar in the mix, too – but the real charm comes from the bubbling, percolated electronics – which seem to include some tape tricks along with the analogue synthesizer, and also some great drum machine rhythms too – but all in the best early chunky 70s modes, and not the later sort of 80s drum machine styles! There's only a slight hint of some of the more familiar Turkish rock styles of the period – as the songs here, while tuneful, are usually devoid of lyrics – and would most likely be more at home in the world of Perry & Kingsley than Ersen or Baris Manco. Spacey sounds from the dream team of Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat – a set that feels a bit like music that Foat previously recorded under his own name, but which also has a more spiritual sound overall! Hampshire plays guitar and auto harp, and Foat plays Fender Rhodes, vibes, and other keyboards – but those instruments are just part of the sound here – as there's also some added strings, tenor, and other elements from time to time – inflecting the music with a visionary quality that reminds us of some of the more freethinking records coming out in the early 70s – especially the kind of small label sets that were years ahead of their time, and only finally getting their due all these many years later. The presentation of the package echoes the style of older Michael Garrick material on the UK Argo Records – and there's definitely a depth here to live up to that spirit, but also a warmer vibe overall. A double-length set that really digs deep into the rich array of sounds that Derrick Harriott brought to Jamaican music in the late 60s – not just cuts he recorded under his own name, but work by some of his contemporaries that were done with Derrick's help – served up here as one of the sharpest documents of the rocksteady years at their best! The tunes are all plenty soulful, and recorded with a tight, core sound – that initial wave of Jamaican production that was feeling its own energy, but never needed to trip out that much – especially since there were so many great guitarists, saxophone players, and rhythm combos to keep things cool. Harriott adds in his wonderfully soulful vocals on key cuts, sharing space with other singers too – and a few of the tracks are hip instrumentals with a great 60s vibe. Milestone/Concord, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest Joe Henderson albums of the 70s – a suite of tracks dedicated to the four elements – and served up with some great accompaniment from Alice Coltrane! The style here is a wonderful mix of Coltrane's spirituality and Henderson's down-to-earth soulfulness – in a style that recalls some of the best moments on Coltrane's sublime Ptah The El Daoud album – a set in which Henderson's tenor was a key part. At times, Joe blows with a bit of Coltrane-like searching – but at others, he's bringing up more of a rhythmic pulse that really gives Alice a great focus – using her piano, harp, and harmonium alongside bass by Charlie Haden, violin from Michael White, and percussion from Ndugu Chancler and Baba Daru Oshu. Sublime girl group sounds from the great Lee Hazlewood – the complete recordings of Honey Ltd – an obscure Hazlewood project from the end of the 60s! The style here combines all the depths of Lee's own music with some of the sweeter Sunshine Pop sounds you'd expect from the cover – a really unique mix that has these moodier moments coming forth at times that really surprise us – and which takes the music way way past that of any of the girls' hipper contemporaries – especially the similarly-named Honeys! The harmonies are incredible – definitely rooted in jazz, with a complexity that goes way past pop – and in a way, the group remind us a bit of the incredible Third Wave group who recorded for MPS around the same time – although these gals definitely get a more sinister sound from Lee's help in the studio. Songs are mostly originals by the group – penned with some very compelling lyrics – and the album features great arrangements from Ian Frebairn Smith, who really does a great job of mixing the baroque with the groovy! The set features the full rare album by the quartet, plus two single tracks, and some unreleased cuts as well – titles that include "The Warrior", "Silk N Honey", "Come Down", "For Your Mind", "I've Got Your Mind", "Tomorrow Your Heart", "Eli's Coming", "I'm So Glad", "Love The Devil (backing track)", and "Silver Threads & Golden Needles". Kang Tae HwanLive at Cafe Amores ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 1995. New Copy ... $22.99
Kang Tae Hwan plays alto sax with a rawness that's usually reserved for the tenor – a fantastic sound that really comes through beautifully here in this solo set of improvisations! The material was recorded around the same time as Kang's brilliant (and few) recordings for the Japanese market – and the long-overdue presentation of this performance comes as a much-needed accompaniment to his small catalog – the kind of record that boldly, brilliantly documents a completely unique talent – one whose name should have resonated much more strongly on the global free jazz scene of the past 20 years! IcytwatMILK (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Omerta, 2018. New Copy ... $23.99 24.98
Debut project from Chicago producer Icytwat – and profane as the name, cover and they rhymes are there's a diverse, skillful craft that covers some pretty wide terrain – from the heavy atmospheric hip hip soul of "Clouds" with Kyeoshin, the piano and chimes laced title track and lots more more – ultimately really impressive on the production side. Also includes "Don Juan" with $ilk Money, "Flodgin", "Shame", "Fin", "Z4 Music", "Pastel Talk" with Indigochildrick & $ilk Money and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Hand-numbered limited edition of 500 copies – on "milk white" colored vinyl. Sold out via the distributor...get it while it's gettable!)

IvoriesPlease Stay/I'm In A Groove ... 7-inch
Outta Sight (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $9.99
Great girl group soul – with a righteous undercurrent too! "Please Stay" moves along at a really nice clip – a tight Northern-styled number that has the vocals soaring up strongly, almost with a Chi-soul sort of sound! There's piano peppering the rhythms – possibly the ivories mentioned in the group's name – and "I'm In A Groove" is definitely a cut that lives up to its name, with a sweet undercurrent of funk that's really great! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jackson SistersJackson Sisters ... LP
Tiger Lily/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
An amazing bit of soul – and one of the rarest funk records of the 70s! This masterpiece was recorded by The Jackson Sisters, a semi-gospelly soul group that has a sound that's a bit like The Voices of East Harlem, but that's a lot harder, and that has a deeper soul sound overall! At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. This album's the only one they ever cut – and it's just about impossible to find in the original pressing (and in fact, we've never seen a copy!) Apart from the amazing cut "Miracles", this one includes loads of gems like "Rockin' On My Porch", "Shake Her Loose", "(Why Can't We Be) More Than Just Friends", and "Boy, You're Dynamite"! JazzanovaPool ... LP
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It feels like quite some time since we've last heard from Jazzanova – a group who were continually exploding our musical horizons back at the end of the last century, and who really seem to have evolved their sound in more recent years! This double-length set has a tremendous sense of scope – as the group have long moved past the jazz rhythms of their name, into worlds that easily embrace hip hop, contemporary soul, and other current styles – served up here with help from a top-shelf lineup of guests, including Jamie Cullum, Oddisee, Paul Randolph, Olivier St Louis, Charlotte OC, David Lemaitre, Nah Slee, Pete Josef, and Rachel Sermanni – each of whom give their tracks a slightly different vibe than the others. Titles include "Summer Keeps On Passing Me By", "Now", "Rain Makes The River", "Follow Your Feet", "Heat Wave", "It's Beautiful", "Everything I Wanted", "Let's Live Well", "I'm Still Here", and "No 9". ✨✧ Lack Of AfroJack Of All Trades ... LP
Loa (UK), 2018. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
Warmly soulful work from Lack Of Afro – a name we first knew for more dancefloor-oriented projects, but one that's really evolved into much richer territory in recent years! The album's overflowing with vocal tracks – soulful groovers that lean heavily on styles from the 60s and 70s, but also have some more contemporary club elements too – often handled with a fair bit of live instrumentation, along with all the core elements provided by producer Adam Gibbons! The singers shift on each number, creating a strong sense of variety – with vocals from Nick Corbin, Emma Noble, Elliott Cole, Juliette Ashby, Wax, Alyssa Marie, Ed Martin, and others – on titles that include "Don't Do Me Over", "The Messin Around", "Back In Business", "Home", "Good Love", "Back To The Day", "Baby Be Mine", "Only You & Me", and "Reach Out". Azar LawrenceBridge Into The New Age (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Prestige, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A wicked set from reedman Azar Lawrence – one of the few albums issued under his own name, and a great example of the waves he was making on the 70s west coast scene! There's a depth here that goes beyond most of the other Fantasy Records sessions of the time – a sound that would be right at home on Strata East, or in some of the more righteous Cobblestone sessions – no surprise, given that the ensemble here is filled with key spiritual jazz players, including Woody Shaw on trumpet, Hadley Caliman on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, Billy Hart on drums, Mtume on congas, and even Jean Carn on a bit of guest vocals! Most tracks are longish, and a perfect setting for Azar's exploratory reed work on soprano sax and tenor – and titles include "Warriors Of Peace", "Forces Of Nature", and "The Beautiful & Omnipresent Love". Leon's CreationThis Is The Beginning ... LP
Studio 10/Acid Jazz (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A rare album of funky soul from the Bay Area scene at the start of the 70s – and a set that's every bit as righteous as you might expect from the cover! The group's the creation of singer/keyboardist/arranger Leon Pattillo – hence the name – and you might know Leon from his later famous work in the 70s – including a stint with Santana, and loads of great work with other soul artists. But here, he's a young genius working in the freest, funkiest style of the San Francisco generation – with a vibe that's maybe a more spiritual take on territory explored by Sly & The Family Stone – with an earthier, more indie vibe overall. The group has great interplay – tight instrumentation, but never slick, and with some nice long-haired currents – and vocals are by Leon and a female singer – on titles that include "Confusion", "If I Had The Power", "Sightless", "Back Roads", "This Is The Beginning", and "Mirage". Los MirlosLos Charapas De Oro ... LP
Infopesa (Spain), 1975. New Copy ... $24.99
A chica classic from 70s Peru – a record that's based on cumbia rhythms, but filled with lots of trippy touches throughout – including a fair bit of guitar work that rivals the American surf scene of the early 60s! The mix of modes here is the stuff of legend – that genre that was so underground at the time, it never got much global circulation – despite the relative success of Los Mirlos on their home turf, and a wider love of cumbia rhythms on the South American scene! Yet the mix here is so unique, it's maybe taken the rest of us a few decades to catch up – finally ready to enjoy the charms of cuts that include "Sonido Amazonico", "El Viejito Enamorado", "Cabalgando Con Ella", "Recordando Un Amor", "Somos Los Mirlos", "Flor Silvestre", "Cumbia A Requna", and "Caprichosa Y Engredia".
