✨✧ VariousNigeria Soul Fever – Afro Funk, Disco, & Boogie – West African Disco Mayem (3LP set – with download) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Nigerian groove of the 70s – way past the familiar modes of Fela Kuti, and served up here in a range of artists who followed on a huge second wave of soul that soared from Lagos and beyond in the second half of the decade! The music here opens up in a sweet range of different styles – including bits of club and boogie that have come into the scene to open up Nigerian funk in more global modes for the dancefloor – blending African roots with American currents, in a sound that's completely unique – and which is way better than some of the Afro-disco modes that were coming from Europe a the time! As usual with the folks at Soul Jazz, the set's an ear-opening work of genius – from the superb track selection, to the very thorough notes and research – which really do a great job of presenting this side of Nigerian funk that's always been a bit eclipsed by some of the bigger names on the scene. Liner notes are by dancefloor historian Bill Brewster – and titles include "Do The Funkro" by Joni Haastrup, "You Can't Change A Man" by Christy Essien, "Afrikana Disco" by Akin Richards & The Executives, "Ocheche" by Don Bruce & The Anges, "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" by Tee Mac, "Get Up & Dance" by Benis Cletin, "Enoviyin" by Colomach, "Nwaeze" by Jimmy Sherry & The Musik Agents, "Wake Up Your Mind" by Joni Haastrup, "Disco Dancing" by Angela Starr, "Mr Been To" by Arakatula, "Living Every Day" by Tee Mac with Marjorie Barnes, "Wake Up Africa" by Arakatula, and "Soul Fever" by Benis Cletin. ✨✧ Ebo TaylorLife Stories – Highlife & Afrobeat Classics 1973 to 1980 ... LP
Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great Ghana grooves from Ebo Taylor – a tremendous collection of his funkiest 70s work – and a much-needed reintroduction of his talents to the world at large! Much of the music here has strong links with more familiar Afro Funk – but the overall approach is often a bit unique, too – lots more guitar in the rhythms at times, in ways that echo the lighter lyricism of highlife, yet all without losing the commitment to bottom sounds that made 70s changes in African music so great! The package does a great job of archaeology – bringing together not just cuts recorded under Taylor's own name, but also work with other groups too – all in a set that offers plenty in the way of notes and historical details, too. 2LP set features 12 titles that include "Heaven", "Aba Yaa", "Atwer Abroba", and "Peace On Earth" by Ebo Taylor, "Tamfo Nyi Akyir" by Apagya Showband, "Ohiani Sua Efir" by Asasse Ase, "Ene Nyame Nam A Mensuor" by Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor, "Egya Edu" by Ebo Taylor & The Pelikans, and "Love & Death" by Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu. ✨✧ VariousThai? Dai! – The Heavier Sound Of The Luk Thung Underground ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of underground Thai rock we've seen – and it certainly is The Heavier Sound Of the Luk Thung Underground – including a uniquely Thai vision flavored with a Black Sabbath riff, psych makeovers of Thai folklore, and a bunch great tunes that meld Bangkok life with western garage and psychedelia masterfully! All of the tunes are heavy in their own way, but it's by no means heavy in a simple hard rock way – loads of impassioned vocals, astounding percussion, tripped out guitar and other strings and woozy organ keep the arrangements exciting, and the otherworldly aspects play nice with accessible melodies. Titles include "Kuen Kuen Lueng Leung" (the aforementioned heady take on Sabbath's "Iron Man"), "Ruk Kun Samong" by Plearn Promdan, "Pai Joi" by Rung Petchburi, "Nam Mun Pang" by Sroeng Santi, "Dub Fai Kui Gun" by Sroeng Santi and more. 14 massive slabs of heavy Thai psych in all! ✨✧ Tee Mac featuring Marjorie BarnesNight Illusion ... LP
SKJ/Soul Jazz (UK), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet bit of funky club from Tee Mac – a set that was recorded in Lagos at the end of the 70s, but which has plenty of American disco touches overall! Tee plays some sweet flute solos in the mix, and the record also features some great lead vocals from Majorie Barnes – who tops off some of the best tracks as they step around in a mix of clubby rhythms and Mac's jazzy solos! Before returning to Nigeria in the late 70s, Tee scored big fame for some work on the biggest singles by Silver Convention (he wrote "Fly Robin Fly" and "Stand Up & Boogie") – and while that disco experience shows in the care and class of the production, the overall sound here is a lot warmer and more fluid than any sort of Euro disco. Titles include "Night Illusion", "Living Everyday", "Struggle", "Hit Hit", "A Certain Way To Go", and "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tee MacNepa Oh Nepa (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Hot Casa (Netherlands), Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The first-ever set to bring together the work of Nigerian flute player Tee Mac – a hell of a musician, and an Afro Funk contemporary of Fela Kuti, but with a huge legacy of his own! The set features both sides of Tee's talents – with one side of Afro Soul, and one of Afro Funk – but even the soul cuts are pretty darn funky, with a great blend of heavy rhythms and sweet flute solos from Mac – who slides out from the vocals in a way that almost makes these records feel like a 70s Nigerian version of Bobbi Humphrey on Blue Note! Production is great – never too slick, and at a level that swirls together the basslines, guitars, and keyboards – on titles that include "Nepa", "Talk To Me", "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo", "Wake Up", "Stay On Me", and "No One Can Rule The World". Scepter/Sundazed, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare soul from the Scepter label – the famous home to the early work of Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach, but a very hip record company with a strong commitment to underground soul in the 60s! The best of that stretch is presented here – in a really well-done collection that's filled with obscure tracks that only every appeared as 45s, including some obscure cuts by bigger names, including a few that might surprise you! There's also a few blue-eyed soul tracks here too – titles that might seem a bit surprising on paper, but really fit the groove of the collection. Titles include "Work Song" by Tommy Hunt, "Dearly Beloved" by Jack Montgomery, "Just One More Time" by JJ Barnes, "The Change" by Ernestine Eady, "I'm Stepping Out Of The Picture" by Johnny Maestro & The Crests, "Out In The Streets Again" by Candy & The Kisses, "Lost Love" by Irma & The Fascinators, "Hey Watcha Doin" by Jerry Tiffe, "Marching" by The Camp, "Groovy Guy" by The Shirelles, "Tonight's The Night" by Candy & The Kisses, and "Ain't No Soul Left In These Old Shoes" by Ronnie Milsap. Sweet Jamaican harmony! Harmony groups form a major piece of the Jamaican music tapestry, and Soul Jazz casts their Studio One-centered spotlight on one of the finest batches of Jamaican ensemble soul around! Covering everything from the rocksteady years on up through the late roots era, the groups showcased here deliver smoothly harmonized numbers under Cosxsone Dodd's deft direction, with only a few hewing towards the more raw sound favored by some of the rootsier ensembles, but all over easy Studio One rocking grooves. 19 dynamite numbers in all, with full annotation as with other releases in this Soul Jazz series, including "Solid Foundation" by the Righteous Flames, "Things A Come Up To Bump" by the Bassies, "You Will Never Know" by the Mad Lads, "What Is It" by the Consumates, "The Struggle" by the Viceroys, "Get In The Groove" by the Heptones, "Pick Up The Pieces" by the Royals, "Jah Jah Go Before Us" by the Gladiators, "Love & Affection" by Bob Marley & The Wailers, "Down Presser International" by the Stingers, "Baby Why" by the Cables, "The Pressure Is On" by the Purpleites, "Cheating & Lying" by the Silvertones and more! Atomic Bomb BandAtomic Bomb Band Performing The Music Of William Onyeabor (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2017. New Copy ... $22.99
A really fantastic album that's way better than any other tribute record we've ever heard – even though the whole thing's a tribute to the legendary William Onyeabor! Yet rather than slavishly copying Onyeabor's music, the group here take off in so many new directions – many of them very funky and filled with even more acoustic touches than in the original versions of the songs – including some great sax and trumpet lines that really give the music some depth. The group features a huge array of all-stars – members of LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Sinkane, and The Beastie Boys – but this also isn't some project where big names are just phoning it in, as there's a very unified vibe that seems to bring out the best in everyone – including folks we might not even like in another context. Jamie Lidell sings on a few cuts, Money Mark plays keyboards on the record, and even the great Charles Lloyd delivers two great tenor solos – on titles that include "Poor Boy", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", "Good Name", "Heaven & Hell", and "Love Me Now". Fantastic fold-out cover design too! LP, Vinyl record album

Albert AylerMy Name Is Albert Ayler ... LP
Debut/Jeanne Dielman (Italy), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A key early album by Albert Ayler – a mindblowing record even all these many years later, and a key introduction of Ayler's music to the rest of the world! The set begins with a compelling spoken introduction from Albert – really taking the time to introduce himself and his new approach to jazz – then rolls into searing sounds on tenor and soprano sax, played with accompaniment from a European trio that has Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, Niels Bronsted on piano, and Ronnie Gardier on drums. A number of the tunes are standards – used by Ayler here in ways that are similar to some of Cecil Taylor's initial recordings – as a way of marking his own different in jazz, before setting out on his own compositions in years to come. Given the quartet setting, there's less of the locked horns and rhythms of some of Ayler's ESP recordings to come – but the difference in format also makes the album a real standout in his catalog, too. Titles include "Bye Bye Blackbird", "Summertime", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "CT". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe BataanSalsoul ... LP
Mericana, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
A landmark album from Joe Bataan – so great, that it made the entire record company change its name! The record has Joe really bursting out after his seminal Latin Soul work of the late 60s – blending Latin rhythms and American soul into a whole new style of music – one that Joe called "Salsoul", because of it's mixture of salsa and soul! The blend is fantastic, a real milestone in the NuYorican scene – and handled perfectly by Joe on every cut! There's some massive Latin funk on here, including the tracks "Latin Strut" and "Aftershower Funk", plus some straighter Latin jazz, like "Sunny Gets Blue Mambo", and a great Latin Soul cut with English vocals called "Johnny". Franco BattiatoPollution ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1973. New Copy ... About October 20, 2017
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Titles include "Il Silenzio Del Rumore", "31 Dicembre 1999 – Ore 9", "Beta", "Plancton", "Pollution", and "Areknames". LP, Vinyl record album

BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Beastie BoysIn Sound From Way Out! (2LP version) ... LP
Grand Royal/Universal (France), 1996/1998. New Copy (reissue)... About October 27, 2017
Sweeeeet vinyl reissue of the long out o' print Beasties instrumental release. Even at their weakest vocal moments, we've always dug the Beastie Boys' firm committment to funky instrumental backing. Their albums are filled with lots of nice interludes, instrumentals, and backing grooves that always seem to get buried amidst all of the tracks with vocals. Now, this excellent collection brings together some of their best tracks in this genre, for an album that's got the sound of a lost jazz organ session, with lots of weird twists and turns thrown in. The set's a cool bit of instrumental funk with a very classic production feel, and a modern committment to the funky break. Every track's a winner, and titles include "Groove Holmes", "Sabrosa", "In 3's", "Bobo On the Corner", and "Shambala", plus bonus tracks "Namaste" and "Lighten Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Hard to deny the lasting power of this crucial album from The Beatles – a set that unleashed some of their trippiest sounds and most tender moments too! The mix of wit and honesty is wonderful – and the sonic range is dynamic as the archetypal cover image – a package that's had an undeniable impact on modern music for the past few decades! Titles include "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "She's Leaving Home", "Lovely Rita", "When I'm Sixty Four", "A Day In The Life", and "Fixing A Hole". Bird CurtisBird Curtis Quintet (with bonus CD & download) ... LP
Tony Pike/Jazzaggression (Finland), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Bird Curtis isn't a single guy, but instead the title of the group – a conflation of the names of tenorist Ian Bird and trumpeter John Tewlaney Curtis – who both lead this fabulous British group from the end of the 60s! These guys are far less known than giants of their scene from the time – like Tubby Hayes, Michael Garrick, or Joe Harriott – but they play with a similar blend of modernism and bop, at a level that makes this lost album one that you'll easily play next to treasures from those bigger artists! The writing and sense of arrangement are superb – very fresh and original, so that these guys are never just trying to ape an American hardbop mode – ala Blue Note or Prestige – and instead really find a new level of creative interplay between all the instruments in the quintet, especially on the long tracks in the set. Other group members include Ray Shea on piano, Daryl Runswick on bass, and Tim Wooley on drums – all but one of whom contributed original material to the set, along with the leaders – and titles include "The Butter Tree", "10:15", "Sails", "Tartain Reign & Victory In Splendour", and "Tropicana". Jane BirkinBirkin Gainsbourg – Le Symphonique ... LP
Warner, 2017. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 25.98
A wonderful setting for the great Jane Birkin – working here with a full symphony orchestra, in very fresh interpretations of the classic songs of her onetime partner, Serge Gainsbourg! The orchestrations are wonderful – never sleepy, and always nicely light – so that Jane's voice is very upfront in the mix, but has a vibe that's quite different than most of her other later work – almost more fragile, in a way – and certainly with more world experience in her tone than when she sang some of these songs in her youth. The project is a surprising treat, and has us loving Birkin all over again – as well as being really amazed that some of Serge's songs could sound so different. Titles include "Baby Alone In Babylon", "Jane B", "L'Anamour", "La Javanaise", "Amour Des Feintes", "Valse De Melody", "Ces Petits Riens", "La Chanson De Prevert", and "Requiem Pour Un Con". Paul BleyImprovisie ... LP
America/Bamboo (France), 1972. New Copy ... $23.99
Incredible work from Paul Bley – and a record that captures him in his excellent electric period, working in a different setting than we've heard him elsewhere! The group on the set is a trio – one that matches Bley's work on electric piano and synthesizer with percussion from Han Bennink and vocals, piano, bass, and additional synthesizer from a young Annette Peacock! Peacock is especially restrained on the record – especially if you only know her later, straighter work – and her contribution here is wonderfully subtle and extremely lovely. Side one features the track "Improvisie", a free improvisation with Bley on electric piano and synthesizer – and tonalities are as "out" as the playing, which is generally quite spacious and dynamic – though hardly quiet. The second side features a Peacock tune titled "Touching" that's a bit more intense – very much in the spirit of the work on the first side, and a unique slice of magic from this one-off session! Braen's MachineTemi Ritmici E Dinamici (with bonus CD) ... LP
Liuto/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Maybe the coolest and grooviest music we've heard from the obscure Braen's Machine sound library project from early 70s Italy – a record that's less tripped out than its predecessors, and instead has this great style that's heavy on bossa elements and funky jazz! The vibe's a bit like the best Italian soundtracks of the period – especially work by Morricone or Trovajoli – and the group still apparently features contributions from Alessandro Alessandroni, working with Piero Umiliani – which gives the whole thing a very strong soundtrack pedigree! Instrumentation includes some mighty nice keyboards – both Hammond and electric piano – and lots of great production on familiar instruments, which can give things like a snare drum a very odd crackle, or a flute this weirdly spacious sound. Titles include "Movimento", "Dinimica", "Gara", "Passeggiata", "Aspetti Grotteschi", "Esercizi Ginnici", "Ritmica Sportiva", and "Rinuncia". LP, Vinyl record album

Hardly the corporate record you'd guess from the name – and instead a fantastic funk track from the 70s underground! There's a cool descending vibe to the rhythm – which contrasts nicely with the soaring vocals of the group! "Doin It Our Way" follows with an equally upbeat sound – a leadoff sax solo over upbeat rhythms, and great lead vocals by a strongly-voiced female singer! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jack Bongo BurgerEnd On Bongos (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Hi Fi/Modern Harmonic, 1957. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A sweet set from that great record moment when Latin styles were coming into play with the hipper sounds of the bachelor pad world! Jack "Bongo" Burger was a west coast percussionist with a very similar style to Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo – and in fact, since they're both named Jack, and have a bongo middle name, we always wonder whether or not they're the same person! Whatever the case, this album's a tasty batch of bongo-heavy tracks – with a style that's similar to some of Costanzo's work on Liberty, although perhaps with slightly less of a Latin bent. The group includes Buddy Collette on flute and sax, plus piano, trumpet, electric bass, and some nice odd percussion. Kind of like a combo of some of Collette's jazz work, and the exotic stuff that was also appearing on the Hi Fi label. Tracks include "Jordu", "China Nights Mambo", "Negre Setin", "Chiu Chiu", and "Mambo Burger". LP, Vinyl record album

Take a trip through hell with the CA Quintet – an obscure late 60s combo from the Twin Cities – and one who've got more than enough psychedelic power to live up to the Cali promise of their name! The album's got a pretty amazing cover – nude models dancing in a satanic landscape – and the sounds within are even more incredible – way more eerie and offbeat than other records of this nature, with a true undercurrent of evil that really comes through in both the darkness of the instrumentation, and the creepy way the vocals are put across. A single long, improvised piece – beautifully performed by Didier Lasserre on drums and Jean-Luc Cappozzo on both trumpet and flugelhorn – served up with all the sense of space we might have hoped for a track that takes up an entire record! Lasserre's using a lot of mallets on his drums, which creates a low rumble that's often contrasted by some of Cappozzo's bolder notes on the trumpet – yet even his quieter, more subtle sounds find plenty of expression here – especially his "mouthy" textures that can have an earthier vibe. Johnny returns to prison for another incredible set – a set might be an even more remarkable portrait of the Man In Black at his raucous best than the uber legendary Live At Folsom Prison! Like the Folsom gig, the set was captured by producer Bob Johnston, who also so masterfully recorded Bob Dylan at his most primal. Unlike the Folsom set, in which Johnny was famously accompanied by the Tennessee Three, the San Quentin band was fleshed out to include all of the still performing Carter women, Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers. Another breathtaking prison recording, featuring the famous version of "A Boy Named Sue" where you hear the crowd going completely nuts. Gino ConteNell'Anno Della Luna (with bonus CD) ... LP
RCA/Schema (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... $22.99
A very cool little soundtrack, and a set that's maybe a bit different than some of the bigger-name Italian film scores from the giants of the golden age! Gino Conte is a much more obscure figure, and he's clearly opening himself up to a range of sounds that really fit the shifting modes of the movie – in a way that maybe makes the whole record feel more like a sound library selection of jazzy instrumentals than a much more unified film score – with a great sense of variety that really keeps things interesting throughout! There's a few familiar names here – as Nora Orlandi and the 4+4 vocal group provide cool scatting vocals on a few tracks – while other moments are more instrumental, and work in a warmly funky take on bossa, Latin, and jazzy modes of the 60s – on titles that include "Nell'Anno Della Luna", "Tema Giochi", "Swing For Six", "Samba Querida", "Beat Mania", "Afro Swing", "Alla Brasiliana", and "Magico 2 E 2 Bis".
