Ebo TaylorLife Stories – Highlife & Afrobeat Classics 1973 to 1980 ... LP
Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
Great Ghana grooves from Ebo Taylor – a tremendous collection of his funkiest 70s work – and a much-needed reintroduction of his talents to the world at large! Much of the music here has strong links with more familiar Afro Funk – but the overall approach is often a bit unique, too – lots more guitar in the rhythms at times, in ways that echo the lighter lyricism of highlife, yet all without losing the commitment to bottom sounds that made 70s changes in African music so great! The package does a great job of archaeology – bringing together not just cuts recorded under Taylor's own name, but also work with other groups too – all in a set that offers plenty in the way of notes and historical details, too. 2LP set features 12 titles that include "Heaven", "Aba Yaa", "Atwer Abroba", and "Peace On Earth" by Ebo Taylor, "Tamfo Nyi Akyir" by Apagya Showband, "Ohiani Sua Efir" by Asasse Ase, "Ene Nyame Nam A Mensuor" by Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor, "Egya Edu" by Ebo Taylor & The Pelikans, and "Love & Death" by Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu. ✨✧ VariousNigeria Soul Fever – Afro Funk, Disco, & Boogie – West African Disco Mayem (3LP set – with download) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Nigerian groove of the 70s – way past the familiar modes of Fela Kuti, and served up here in a range of artists who followed on a huge second wave of soul that soared from Lagos and beyond in the second half of the decade! The music here opens up in a sweet range of different styles – including bits of club and boogie that have come into the scene to open up Nigerian funk in more global modes for the dancefloor – blending African roots with American currents, in a sound that's completely unique – and which is way better than some of the Afro-disco modes that were coming from Europe a the time! As usual with the folks at Soul Jazz, the set's an ear-opening work of genius – from the superb track selection, to the very thorough notes and research – which really do a great job of presenting this side of Nigerian funk that's always been a bit eclipsed by some of the bigger names on the scene. Liner notes are by dancefloor historian Bill Brewster – and titles include "Do The Funkro" by Joni Haastrup, "You Can't Change A Man" by Christy Essien, "Afrikana Disco" by Akin Richards & The Executives, "Ocheche" by Don Bruce & The Anges, "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" by Tee Mac, "Get Up & Dance" by Benis Cletin, "Enoviyin" by Colomach, "Nwaeze" by Jimmy Sherry & The Musik Agents, "Wake Up Your Mind" by Joni Haastrup, "Disco Dancing" by Angela Starr, "Mr Been To" by Arakatula, "Living Every Day" by Tee Mac with Marjorie Barnes, "Wake Up Africa" by Arakatula, and "Soul Fever" by Benis Cletin. ✨✧ Tee Mac featuring Marjorie BarnesNight Illusion ... LP
SKJ/Soul Jazz (UK), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet bit of funky club from Tee Mac – a set that was recorded in Lagos at the end of the 70s, but which has plenty of American disco touches overall! Tee plays some sweet flute solos in the mix, and the record also features some great lead vocals from Majorie Barnes – who tops off some of the best tracks as they step around in a mix of clubby rhythms and Mac's jazzy solos! Before returning to Nigeria in the late 70s, Tee scored big fame for some work on the biggest singles by Silver Convention (he wrote "Fly Robin Fly" and "Stand Up & Boogie") – and while that disco experience shows in the care and class of the production, the overall sound here is a lot warmer and more fluid than any sort of Euro disco. Titles include "Night Illusion", "Living Everyday", "Struggle", "Hit Hit", "A Certain Way To Go", and "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo". LP, Vinyl record album

Hot Casa (Netherlands), Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The first-ever set to bring together the work of Nigerian flute player Tee Mac – a hell of a musician, and an Afro Funk contemporary of Fela Kuti, but with a huge legacy of his own! The set features both sides of Tee's talents – with one side of Afro Soul, and one of Afro Funk – but even the soul cuts are pretty darn funky, with a great blend of heavy rhythms and sweet flute solos from Mac – who slides out from the vocals in a way that almost makes these records feel like a 70s Nigerian version of Bobbi Humphrey on Blue Note! Production is great – never too slick, and at a level that swirls together the basslines, guitars, and keyboards – on titles that include "Nepa", "Talk To Me", "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo", "Wake Up", "Stay On Me", and "No One Can Rule The World". PMG (Austria), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A special collaboration between these two legends of Ghanian music – one that has singer Pat Thomas working with the grooves of Ebo Taylor – in an effort to reclaim the sound of calypso as an African sound! The album's got an unusual mix of Caribbean modes and Ghanian soul – bubbling rhythms that are fitted with highlife touches from Taylor's guitar, and from the warm production of the set – and a mode that's maybe more upbeat and positive than some of the 70s work from either artist. Titles include "Sweeter Than Honey", "Ma Huno", "Ene Nyame Nam A Mensuro", "Hiani Sui Efiri A Oyi Abebrese", and "Keep On Trying". LP, Vinyl record album

African Music MachineBlack Water Gold ... LP
Soul Power, 1972/1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $9.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". Atomic Bomb BandAtomic Bomb Band Performing The Music Of William Onyeabor (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2017. New Copy ... $22.99
A really fantastic album that's way better than any other tribute record we've ever heard – even though the whole thing's a tribute to the legendary William Onyeabor! Yet rather than slavishly copying Onyeabor's music, the group here take off in so many new directions – many of them very funky and filled with even more acoustic touches than in the original versions of the songs – including some great sax and trumpet lines that really give the music some depth. The group features a huge array of all-stars – members of LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Sinkane, and The Beastie Boys – but this also isn't some project where big names are just phoning it in, as there's a very unified vibe that seems to bring out the best in everyone – including folks we might not even like in another context. Jamie Lidell sings on a few cuts, Money Mark plays keyboards on the record, and even the great Charles Lloyd delivers two great tenor solos – on titles that include "Poor Boy", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", "Good Name", "Heaven & Hell", and "Love Me Now". Ray BarrettoHead Sounds ... LP
Fania, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
"Head Sounds" is a heck of a great way to describe this album – as it's filled with some of Ray's most mind-expanding cuts! The album kicks off with the tune "Acid", which you probably know from the album of the same name, but which still really does a great job of setting the pace here – and then it rolls into some fantastic longer cuts that really have a very strong jazz component. Ray and the group stretch out tremendously, hitting off-color notes and tones that almost make the record feel like one of Eddie Palmieri's jammers from the same time. 3 tracks on the set are over 8 minutes long, which should give you a good feel of the openness of the work – and titles include "Abidjan", "Espiritu Libre", "Drum Poem", and "Tin Tin Deo". A landmark album from Joe Bataan – so great, that it made the entire record company change its name! The record has Joe really bursting out after his seminal Latin Soul work of the late 60s – blending Latin rhythms and American soul into a whole new style of music – one that Joe called "Salsoul", because of it's mixture of salsa and soul! The blend is fantastic, a real milestone in the NuYorican scene – and handled perfectly by Joe on every cut! There's some massive Latin funk on here, including the tracks "Latin Strut" and "Aftershower Funk", plus some straighter Latin jazz, like "Sunny Gets Blue Mambo", and a great Latin Soul cut with English vocals called "Johnny". Franco BattiatoPollution ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1973. New Copy ... On September 22, 2017
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Titles include "Il Silenzio Del Rumore", "31 Dicembre 1999 – Ore 9", "Beta", "Plancton", "Pollution", and "Areknames". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Jorge BenTabua De Esmeralda (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
Searing samba soul from Jorge Ben – one of his best-remembered albums of the 70s, and for good reason too! The album's got a slightly fuller feel than some of Ben's other work of the time – never slick, but with backings balanced nicely against his own raspy vocals and acoustic guitar – sweetening things up with a bit of the strings you'd find on Forca Bruta, but with a hint of the soul to come on Africa Brasil! The balance is great – thanks to arrangers Osmar Milito, Darcy De Paulo, and Hugo Bellard – and as usual, Jorge's vocals are the main attraction – dipping, turning, and rising with this really unique, personal feel – Ben-like brilliance at its brightest. The whole thing's wonderful – a key gem from the Philips years – and titles include "Cinco Minutos", "Zumbi", "Brother", "Os Alquimistas Estao Chegando Os Alquimistas", "Errare Humanum Est", "Menina Muler Da Pele Preta", "Hermes Tri", and "O Namorado Da Viuva". Paul BleyImprovisie ... LP
America/Bamboo (France), 1972. New Copy ... About July 25, 2017 (delayed)
Incredible work from Paul Bley – and a record that captures him in his excellent electric period, working in a different setting than we've heard him elsewhere! The group on the set is a trio – one that matches Bley's work on electric piano and synthesizer with percussion from Han Bennink and vocals, piano, bass, and additional synthesizer from a young Annette Peacock! Peacock is especially restrained on the record – especially if you only know her later, straighter work – and her contribution here is wonderfully subtle and extremely lovely. Side one features the track "Improvisie", a free improvisation with Bley on electric piano and synthesizer – and tonalities are as "out" as the playing, which is generally quite spacious and dynamic – though hardly quiet. The second side features a Peacock tune titled "Touching" that's a bit more intense – very much in the spirit of the work on the first side, and a unique slice of magic from this one-off session! Bob & GeneIf This World Were Mine (with bonus tracks & download) ... LP
Modo/Daptone, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 18.99
A previously-unreleased sweet soul treasure – now finally getting its due! Bob & Gene were an obscure duo from Buffalo at the end of the 60s – recording briefly together under the guidance of Bob's father, who recorded the young pair in his home studio with the help of some great funk and soul musicians from the local scene – with a sound that's fresh, fragile, and deeply personal. Many numbers have a slow, sad quality that's right up there with some of the best harmony soul of the time – a wispy late nite kind of sound that's captured perfectly here, with just the right balance of roughness and sweet. Other numbers get a bit more upbeat, and almost a bit funky – showing the pair to have a bit more punch than some of their contemporaries, and a sometimes sunny sound that really sparkles amidst the darkness. Most of the work here was recorded in the late 60s, but never released – making this the first-ever album by the group. And as a bonus note of trivia, Bob here is none other than Bobby Nunn – who went onto record under his own name, and did a lot of great work in the LA scene of the 70s! Titles include "Gotta Find A Way", "Your Name", "It Won't Go", "I Can Be Cool", "Sailboat", "Interlude", "Which Love", "Don't Leave Me Girl", "You Gave Me Love", and a great cover of "If This World Were Mine". WeJazz (Finland), 2016. New Copy ... $14.99
Great work from the Bowman Trio – a group named not for any of the musicians who perform , but for the writer J Bowman – whose words inspired each of the songs on the set! The trio features Tomi Nikku on trumpet, Joonas Tuuri on bass, and Sami Nummela on drums – all Finnish players who are relatively new to our ears, but who come on here with a dynamic energy that really blows us away – an approach that's maybe somewhere in the territory of free jazz, but a lot more focused – yet still a lot farther-out than some of the work from other corners of the Scandinavian scene! The drums and bass really push most tracks with a soaring sort of power – and Nikku has this way of running high and low on his horn, in one of the most searching, searing takes on trumpet we've heard in a long time – and one of the freshest, too. Titles include "How To Win A Gun Fight", "Bowman Cigarettes", "Hard Work", "Khumbu Icefall", "Am Prayer", and "Summer In Visby". LP, Vinyl record album

Braen & Raskovich (Alessandro Alessandroni/GiulianDrammatico (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Panda/Sonor (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
They're not kidding with the title of this one – as the album leaps off to a very dramatic style, right from the start – with a surprisingly noisy sound titled after the incubation of the heavens! That noise moves aside a bit as the album moves on, but the whole thing still stays very strongly in the fuzzy, freaky territory you might know from other Italian rarities issued under the name of Braen and Raskovich – which were both studio pseudonyms for Alessandro Alessandroni and Giuliano Sorgini! Yet despite the fame of both of those artists in other settings, they're very much in a different space here – not just psych-inspired sound library modes, but also pre-industrial sounds too – of a style that seems to hint at the darker depths of the British underground in the post-punk years. At times, if we told you the album was a project by Throbbing Gristle, you wouldn't be surprised – and like TG, there's some surprisingly tuneful points amidst the noisier moments. Titles include "Dispersi", "Accerchiamento", "Linea Di Resistenza", "Insidia", "Ultimo Istante", and "Avanzata". LP, Vinyl record album

Braen's MachineTemi Ritmici E Dinamici (with bonus CD) ... LP
Liuto/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Maybe the coolest and grooviest music we've heard from the obscure Braen's Machine sound library project from early 70s Italy – a record that's less tripped out than its predecessors, and instead has this great style that's heavy on bossa elements and funky jazz! The vibe's a bit like the best Italian soundtracks of the period – especially work by Morricone or Trovajoli – and the group still apparently features contributions from Alessandro Alessandroni, working with Piero Umiliani – which gives the whole thing a very strong soundtrack pedigree! Instrumentation includes some mighty nice keyboards – both Hammond and electric piano – and lots of great production on familiar instruments, which can give things like a snare drum a very odd crackle, or a flute this weirdly spacious sound. Titles include "Movimento", "Dinimica", "Gara", "Passeggiata", "Aspetti Grotteschi", "Esercizi Ginnici", "Ritmica Sportiva", and "Rinuncia". LP, Vinyl record album

Budos BandBudos Band III (includes bonus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2010. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids). The album's got a pretty amazing cover – nude models dancing in a satanic landscape – and the sounds within are even more incredible – way more eerie and offbeat than other records of this nature, with a true undercurrent of evil that really comes through in both the darkness of the instrumentation, and the creepy way the vocals are put across. A single long, improvised piece – beautifully performed by Didier Lasserre on drums and Jean-Luc Cappozzo on both trumpet and flugelhorn – served up with all the sense of space we might have hoped for a track that takes up an entire record! Lasserre's using a lot of mallets on his drums, which creates a low rumble that's often contrasted by some of Cappozzo's bolder notes on the trumpet – yet even his quieter, more subtle sounds find plenty of expression here – especially his "mouthy" textures that can have an earthier vibe. Johnny returns to prison for another incredible set – a set might be an even more remarkable portrait of the Man In Black at his raucous best than the uber legendary Live At Folsom Prison! Like the Folsom gig, the set was captured by producer Bob Johnston, who also so masterfully recorded Bob Dylan at his most primal. Unlike the Folsom set, in which Johnny was famously accompanied by the Tennessee Three, the San Quentin band was fleshed out to include all of the still performing Carter women, Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers. Another breathtaking prison recording, featuring the famous version of "A Boy Named Sue" where you hear the crowd going completely nuts. RCA/Schema (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... $22.99
A very cool little soundtrack, and a set that's maybe a bit different than some of the bigger-name Italian film scores from the giants of the golden age! Gino Conte is a much more obscure figure, and he's clearly opening himself up to a range of sounds that really fit the shifting modes of the movie – in a way that maybe makes the whole record feel more like a sound library selection of jazzy instrumentals than a much more unified film score – with a great sense of variety that really keeps things interesting throughout! There's a few familiar names here – as Nora Orlandi and the 4+4 vocal group provide cool scatting vocals on a few tracks – while other moments are more instrumental, and work in a warmly funky take on bossa, Latin, and jazzy modes of the 60s – on titles that include "Nell'Anno Della Luna", "Tema Giochi", "Swing For Six", "Samba Querida", "Beat Mania", "Afro Swing", "Alla Brasiliana", and "Magico 2 E 2 Bis". The rhythms change in this nicely sophisticated way, and set things up with a nice edge – which then gets warmed up by the beautiful vocals of the tune!
