✨✧ Charlie ByrdBossa Nova Pelos Passaros (jukebox EP) ... 7-inch
Riverside, Early 60s. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $4.99
Guitarist Charlie Byrd was one of the first American players to record bossa nova tunes – this is one of the best ones that Charlie cut for Riverside – and it features tight guitar work in a mode that's similar to that used by Baden Powell on his early bossa recordings, augmented by trio rhythms. 6 tracks from the LP, including "Ho Ba La La", "Samba Triste", "Yvone", "O Barquinho", "Meditacao", and "Voce E Eu". 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Cover has a name in red marker on back.)

James CarrGonna Send You Back To Georgia/I'm A Fool For You ... 7-inch
Goldwax, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Classic Goldwax work by this Memphis soul legend! The real killer here is "I'm A Fool For You" – sung as a duet with an unnamed female vocalist, stepping along in a slow, almost country-soul pace, with some sublime deep vocals from James that are right up there with his best work! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Yellow & white label pressing. Includes jukebox tab.)

FatnicePeace Love Unity & Havin Fun (Lil' Dave Fun Size mix, Windy City mix)/My Favorite Things (Buscates Vibrate mix) ... 7-inch
Record Breakin, 2014. Sealed (pic cover)... $4.99
Not a cover of the Afrika Bambaataa classic of the same name – although the cut does borrow the chorus for its own – and instead some mighty fresh work from Fatnice, set to some crackling cosmic beats! Our favorite is the stripped-down "windy city mix", which has a brasness the Lil Dave mix is missing – and the flipside features Fatnice's own take on the concept of "Favorite Things" – served up with this true school vibe that should make him huge, if the world has any sense of justice! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Al GreenBack Up Train/Don't Leave Me ... 7-inch
Hot Line, Late 60s. Very Good ... $1.99
A great little single from Al – recorded in the pre-Hi, pre-Willie Mitchell days, when he was working with the Soul Mates group, and working with an "e" on the end of his last name. "Back Up Train" has a nice punch in the ballad groove – very mellow, but also slyly funky! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Flashback pressing.)

Hal's Hobbits/Made In BrasilHal's Hobbits/Crickets Sing For Anamaria ... 7-inch
Hal's Music Center, Mid 70s. Very Good+ ... $79.99
A rare single from this legendary Bay Area Brazilian group – one that was only issued on a small pressing by a local music store! Side one features "Hal's Hobbits" – the story of how some Hobbits formed Hal's Music Center – a pretty goofy spoken bit. But side two features an early cut by bossa maestro Victor M – a totally great take on the Marcos Valle tune "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" (Os Grilos) – with great vocals from a female singer, a sweet flute solo near the end, and lots of driving percussion! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Single has a very slight dish warp, but is pretty great overall.)

Eddie HarrisEddie Harris Goes To The Movies (7 inch jukebox EP) ... 7-inch
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good+ (pic cover)... $2.99
A little mini jukebox EP of Eddie's excellent Vee Jay LP. After the success that Vee Jay had with Eddie Harris' huge hit version of "Exodus", they cut this album of Eddie playing movie themes – like "Tonight", "Moonglow", "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry", "Gone With The Wind", "Be My Love" and "Secret Love". Dick Marx handled the arrangements – and the overall sound is slicker than Eddie's "Exodus", as his solos are laid out over larger string arrangements by Dick Marx, but it's not without some charms – especially because Eddie's tone at this point is amazing, filled with little tricks and turns that make just about anything he plays sound great! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Cover has a name in marker on back.)

Willie Henderson & the Soul ExplosionsFunky Chicken (parts 1 & 2) ... 7-inch
Brunswick, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Chicago funkiness from the great Willie Henderson – a tune that was one of his biggest hits, and which has a different kind of groove from Rufus Thomas' number of the same name! Lots of nice skittish percussion, and a good mix of the rough and smooth! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jon HendricksCloudburst/Four Brothers ... 7-inch
Decca, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $1.99
Very cool – and one of the first records we've seen issued under the name of Jon Hendricks! The single is pre-Lambert Hendricks & Ross – but also features backing from the Dave Lambert singers. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Promo copy, too. One label has a small sticker.)

Hank Soulman MullenHe Upset Your Dreams/Listen ... 7-inch
Ever-Soul/Daptone, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $2.99
Tight-stepping soul from the well-named Hank "Soulman" Mullen – a great groover that moves at a Northern pace, but has a deeper soul feel overall! Hank's vocals are totally great – warm and raspy, almost in the best Memphis tradition – and the rhythms of the track are tightly vamping with some nicely skittish guitar and horns blasting over the top! "Listen" is great too – a mellower number with a great southern soul feel – like a lost gem from the far-reaches of the Muscle Shoals recording scene! 7-inch, Vinyl record

JohnnyOnly Love (voc, inst) (with download) ... 7-inch
Now Again, 2016. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Killer blend of raw funk and fuzzy guitar from Johnny! – spearheaded by neo-classic funk heavy J Whitefield! Whitefield's is a key contemporary funk player to say the least – busting regional and stylistic boundaries with Poets Of Rhythm, Karl Hector & The Malcouns, Whitefield Brothers and more over the years – while always keeping it funky. Johnny! is another exciting chapter, deserving of exclamation point in the name – leaning more on fuzzy funk guitars and raw drums of Ghana and Zambia in inspiration – working with Henry Taylor (some of Ghana legend Ebo Taylor), singer and percussionist Eric Owusu and others. Includes the vocal and instrumental. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Maskman & The AgentsYaw'll/One Eye Open ... 7-inch
Dynamo, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
"One Eye Open" is a funky 45 classic! It's got a nice hard breakbeat on the intro, and then it leaps into a cool groover with a funny story that runs through the track. Nice stuff, and "Yaw'll" is pretty groovy, too. 7-inch, Vinyl record
