Bama & The Family/AsikoFeeling Good/Drums Of Asiko ... 7-inch
Truth & Soul/Lenar, 2004. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Another great funky single from the Truth & Soul camp – from the Afro-funky Bama & The Family & Asiko! "Feeling Good" is by Bama & The Family is a great little hybrid of the tried-and-true funky 45 style, with just a touch of Fela expansiveness. It's a groover, with long sax notes stretched over some lumbering funky drums, and some called vocal vamps. "Drums Of Asiko" by Asiko is quite appropriately named – nothing but percussion here, with clicking and thumping bongos and other slapped acoustic beats – making this one a bit more Africa-derived than the A-side! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Brenner's FolkDaurat Oest/Clara Llum/Amor Perdut/Ho Se ... 7-inch
Edigsa/Wah Wah (Spain), 1966. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $18.99
Rare 60s work from Brenner's Folk – a Spanish group who later changed their name to Pic Nic, and had a lot more success in that format! The style here is a bit folksy, but also recorded with a garagey style too – a nicely dark current that makes the male singer sound especially nice, although his duets with the group's female vocalist are pretty great too. Some tunes are more straightforward, while others have some trippier guitar – and titles include "Ho Se", "Clara Lluna", "Amor Perdut", and "Daurat Oest". – a swirling blend of guitar, organ, and vocals – all served up with an earthy pre-psych sort of style! The group features one female singer, whose role would grow even more in later years, when they changed their name to Pic Nic – and the lyrics have a Catalan style 7-inch, Vinyl record

James BrownReality/I Need Your Love So Bad ... 7-inch
Polydor, 1974. Very Good ... $4.99
"Reality" is a pretty nice one – the title track to the album of the same name, and a political funk number that begins with sirens and city noises, then rolls into an uptempo groove that's got a bit of a "Living For The City" kind of feel. "I Need Your Love" is mellow – kind of a 70s take on the James bluesy ballad style of the 60s. 7-inch, Vinyl record

William DeVaughnBe Thankful For What You Got (parts 1 & 2) ... 7-inch
Roxbury, 1974. Good+ ... $6.99
A classic if there ever was one – a seminal 70s soul track, covered by many, and featuring the classic "diamond in the back" line! Sad thing is, everyone always thinks it's Curtis Mayfield – but it's William, and even better than Curtis! Part 2 is a nice instrumental extension of the song, with groovy guitar. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Plays with some noise. Label has a sticker spot and a name in pen.)

Doctor NativoBugiganga Tropical Vol 2 – Guatemaya/Sabrosura ... 7-inch
Tropical Diaspora (Germany), 2018. New Copy (pic cover)... $11.99
An interesting little single – one that definitely lives up to the Tropical Diaspora label's name – given all the many elements moving together in the grooves! "Guatemaya" was recorded in Belize, but has this slow-stepping groove that's almost mellow cumbia – but intercut with a cross-trading vocal style that feels like it's from father out in the Caribbean! "Sabrosura" has these very deep horns that feel as if they broke from a ska band, which provide this rumbling bottom for a groove that's again kind of this unusual hybrid of cumbia with rhythms from more distant points! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Keither Florence & The Associates/Jonnie Thomas ClDown Here On The Ground/I Love You Lord ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99
Two fantastic tracks – both very unique! "Down Here On The Ground" isn't the 60s song of the same name – but instead an original by Keither Florence, which has these spiritual lyrics that move over slow-stepping funk – all laced together by a very cool moogy keyboard! Florence wrote the flipside – another gospel number that's got a very offbeat funky sound – and a long flute solo that introduces the tune in a really great way! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Hallelujah Chorus/Richard Terry & CoI've Got To Find A Way/Instrumental No 1 ... 7-inch
Nickel, Early 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A righteous soul gem from Chicago – killer work put together by Chi-soul DJ/Arranger Richard Pegue! "Got To Find A Way" features a chorus of singers – not religious, as their name might imply, but a cool group with falsetto soul traces, working in a baroque soul approach that's right up there with the best of the Cadet studio scene! Some great psychedelic touches on the production – and the instrumental on the flipside is a funky gem with loads of tight guitar, heavy conga, and killer sound overall! Super-dope – and a real winner 7-inch, Vinyl record

Hal's Hobbits/Made In BrasilHal's Hobbits/Crickets Sing For Anamaria ... 7-inch
Hal's Music Center, Mid 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A rare single from this legendary Bay Area Brazilian group – one that was only issued on a small pressing by a local music store! Side one features "Hal's Hobbits" – the story of how some Hobbits formed Hal's Music Center – a pretty goofy spoken bit. But side two features an early cut by bossa maestro Victor M – a totally great take on the Marcos Valle tune "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" (Os Grilos) – with great vocals from a female singer, a sweet flute solo near the end, and lots of driving percussion! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Ernie Hawks & The Soul InvestigatorsScorpio Walk/Message Of Love ... 7-inch
Timmion (Finland), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
A great little theme song for Ernie Hawks & The Soul Investigators – a groove that's got all the biting 70s funk elements you might guess from the "Scorpio" name – but at a pace that's kind of a fast-walking sort of groove! There's fuzzy bassline that chugs along in a riffing mode, this cool watery flute line that's nice and funky, and very unusual production that really keeps things on edge! "Message Of Love" is a bit slower, but equally funky – and with lots more trippy guitar, bass, and flute! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Akira Ishikawa & Count BuffalosSoul Limbo/Sidewinder ... 7-inch
Columbia (Japan), 1969. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $24.99
Akira Ishikawa does a wonderful job here with the Booker T & The MGs classic "Soul Limbo" – serving up the tune with even more dynamic energy than the Stax Records original – including some killer percussion (timbales?) that really makes the larger horns leap! The flipside is Lee Morgan's famous hit – but done in this loping funky style that's really wonderful – perfect for the large ensemble! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Limited pressing – from Japanese Record Day 2017!)

Kool & The GangKool & The Gang/Raw Hamburgers ... 7-inch
De-Lite, Early 70s. Very Good ... $4.99
Classic early funkiness from Kool & The Gang! "Kool & the Gang" is a hard funky groover – very worthy of the group's name, with that full-on horn/guitar groove that they virtually pioneered! "Raw Hamburger" is excellent too – with a slowly building, trumpet jazzed sound, laid out over some great spoken parts in which two guys talk about food over some funky clavinet! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Turbo, 1974. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Great groovy stuff – Brother to Brother's fabulous cover of the Gil Scott-Heron track "The Bottle" – done here with a cool flanged vocal chorus on the lyrics, and a tight jazzy groove that reproduces the feel of the original, but adds some soulful female vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Emma DeAngelisEmma DeAngelis EP (Forgiveness/Trip/Plankton) ... 7-inch
Finders Keepers (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (pic cover)... $13.99
You might know the DeAngelis name from other funky Italian work of the 70s – thanks to the soundtrack genius of Guido & Maurizio DeAngelis – but this DeAngelis is their sister Emma, who had a much shorter career – but one that was equally groovy overall! The set begins with the funk monster "Forgiveness" – a track that has to hardly ask for its title, as any funk fan would be grateful to have this gem in their collection – thanks to romping drums and some wickedly funky guitar! "Trip" is moodier – kind of a slow-building number with mellow piano tripping over keyboard waves that flow up and down – with a real superdope vibe overall! "Plankton" is still funky, but very trippy too – loose string plucking that almost feels more like piano strings being strummed than a guitar, but with these slow waves of sound that are mighty nice! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Limited to 1000 copies.)

Lugnut Brand, 2018. New Copy ... $6.99 8.98
A sweet instrumental take on the Sharon Jones classic – one that serves up plenty of Hammond organ in place of the vocals, and a groove that's got all the boogaloo soul style you'd guess from the name of the combo! There's lots of heavy conga in the rhythms, and the horns swell and rise to flavor the tune – then break out with an especially nice sax solo in the middle! 7-inch, Vinyl record

IvoriesPlease Stay/I'm In A Groove ... 7-inch
Outta Sight (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $9.99
Great girl group soul – with a righteous undercurrent too! "Please Stay" moves along at a really nice clip – a tight Northern-styled number that has the vocals soaring up strongly, almost with a Chi-soul sort of sound! There's piano peppering the rhythms – possibly the ivories mentioned in the group's name – and "I'm In A Groove" is definitely a cut that lives up to its name, with a sweet undercurrent of funk that's really great! 7-inch, Vinyl record
