Brenner's FolkDaurat Oest/Clara Llum/Amor Perdut/Ho Se ... 7-inch
Edigsa/Wah Wah (Spain), 1966. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $18.99
Rare 60s work from Brenner's Folk – a Spanish group who later changed their name to Pic Nic, and had a lot more success in that format! The style here is a bit folksy, but also recorded with a garagey style too – a nicely dark current that makes the male singer sound especially nice, although his duets with the group's female vocalist are pretty great too. Some tunes are more straightforward, while others have some trippier guitar – and titles include "Ho Se", "Clara Lluna", "Amor Perdut", and "Daurat Oest". – a swirling blend of guitar, organ, and vocals – all served up with an earthy pre-psych sort of style! The group features one female singer, whose role would grow even more in later years, when they changed their name to Pic Nic – and the lyrics have a Catalan style 7-inch, Vinyl record

Broomfield Corporate JamStop/Doin It Our Way ... 7-inch
Athens Of The North (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $13.99
Hardly the corporate record you'd guess from the name – and instead a fantastic funk track from the 70s underground! There's a cool descending vibe to the rhythm – which contrasts nicely with the soaring vocals of the group! "Doin It Our Way" follows with an equally upbeat sound – a leadoff sax solo over upbeat rhythms, and great lead vocals by a strongly-voiced female singer! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Fabulous DynamicsGet Hip To Yourself/Every Time I See A Pretty Girl ... 7-inch
Big Crown, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 9.98
Raw harmony heaven! "Get Hip To Yourself" has just a bit of riffing guitar to get things going – a slight rhythm that's quickly taken over by the vocals of the group – singing in this mode that's formatted like old street corner soul, but has much more of a 60s quality overall! The tune's very Impressions-like – as is the flipside, which has more guitar – and this slow-building vibe that's nicely spiritual – as when the group had Jerry Butler in the lineup. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Keither Florence & The Associates/Jonnie Thomas ClDown Here On The Ground/I Love You Lord ... 7-inch
Tramp (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99
Two fantastic tracks – both very unique! "Down Here On The Ground" isn't the 60s song of the same name – but instead an original by Keither Florence, which has these spiritual lyrics that move over slow-stepping funk – all laced together by a very cool moogy keyboard! Florence wrote the flipside – another gospel number that's got a very offbeat funky sound – and a long flute solo that introduces the tune in a really great way! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Funky BoysSolid Funk/Out & About ... 7-inch
RCA, 1975. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Don't know who the Funky Boys are – but they more than earn their name! "Solid Funk" is a real heavy-hitter – funky clavinet keys over tight beats, soaring with a bit of strings on the chorus, before hitting back into a tight groove that's got a nice cop show kind of sound! "Out & About" is another instrumental – grooving with some funky keys and a flanged-out, compressed kind of horn style. Pretty nice overall – and a soundtrack-y bit of funk! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Promo in an RCA sleeve.)

Garland GreenBumpin & Stompin/Nothing Can Take You From Me ... 7-inch
Spring, 1975. Very Good+ ... $2.99
Obscure mid period material from Garland! "Bumpin & Stompin" is a funky disco number, with a groove that's not too bad in a kind of pop soul way, but which doesn't work as well for Garland as other backing. The flip's nice, though, and features a very tasty spokey bluesy kind of vocal, of the sort that Garland still does in a live show. And if you've heard that voice, you know it's a killer! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Labels have a name in marker a small sticker.)

Hal's Hobbits/Made In BrasilHal's Hobbits/Crickets Sing For Anamaria ... 7-inch
Hal's Music Center, Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... $44.99
A rare single from this legendary Bay Area Brazilian group – one that was only issued on a small pressing by a local music store! Side one features "Hal's Hobbits" – the story of how some Hobbits formed Hal's Music Center – a pretty goofy spoken bit. But side two features an early cut by bossa maestro Victor M – a totally great take on the Marcos Valle tune "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" (Os Grilos) – with great vocals from a female singer, a sweet flute solo near the end, and lots of driving percussion! 7-inch, Vinyl record

LT & The Soulful DynamicsEveryone Needs Somebody/Crazy About You Baby ... 7-inch
Athens Of The North (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99
Hard-rolling funk from LT & The Soulful Dynamics – a tune that moves along at a nice little clip with fast conga urging on the drums – all while LT sings out these strong lead lyrics amidst the horn blasts of the band! "Crazy About You Baby" is slower, but still has a hard funk step in the groove – and the horns are working this gentler magic in a very cool way! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Mitty CollierI Had A Talk With My Man Last Night/Free Girl (In The Morning) ... 7-inch
Chess, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Beautiful Chicago soul from Mitty. "I Had A Talk" is her secularization of a James Cleveland classic, but it's still got a rich gospelly soul feel to it. "Free Girl" is another nice one, and was written by Collier herself. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Dissipated Face with Daniel CarterLive At CBGB 1986 EP ... 7-inch
Roaratorio, 1986. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $6.99
Mindblowing punk and free jazz collision from Dissipated Face – with alto sax behemoth Daniel Carter blowing fiercely out front – a fast, brutal, yet defiantly musical quartet of songs recorded live in 1986 at the legendary Bowery club! This great 7-inch, 33 1/3 RPM EP has four killer tracks – with fast, bashed out guitars, furious rhythms and angry, aggro vocals – really cool underground stuff just on that level, but Carter's brilliant sax truly blows it into on amazing level. Titles include "Rock Is Dead, S**thead", "Nazi With A New Name", "Streets Of New York" and "My Life Is Like An Alligator". 7-inch, Vinyl record

Joao GilbertoBrazil's Brilliant Joao Gilberto (Capitol 33 Compact 7-inch) ... 7-inch
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good+ (pic cover)... $19.99
The original US pressing of an album that was later issued by Capitol under a different name. Given that Capitol had recently linked up with the ever-growing EMI corporation in the early 60s, it was able to take advantage of the global catalog of the music giant, and managed to dip pretty heavily into the Brazilian Odeon catalog of tunes to cash in on the American popularity of bossa nova. This album was one of their bigger imports, and it features material originally recorded in Brazil, with Gilberto up front, backed by arrangements by Jobim. This 33rpm "Capitol Compact" album features 8 tracks from the full LP – including "Doralice", "O Pato", "Discussao", "Outra Vez", and "Corcovado". 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Sleeve has light wear, aging, and a small split on the top seam.)

Binky GriptiteStroll (pts 1 & 2) ... 7-inch
Daptone, 2009. New Copy ... $4.99
An uptempo funk gem from Binky Griptite – guitarist for the Dap-Kings, so you know he has true school funk & soul in his blood, but he's also a pretty effective vocalist – totally driving it home on "The Stroll"! "The Stroll" is straight up, unambiguously about the world's oldest profession – getting down and dirty in the vocals, and in the Dap-King funk backdrop – with hard hitting drums starting it out, clearing the path for a blast of horns, a killer bass groove, and some of the best funky guitar work we've heard on a Dap-Kings recording to date! The guitars get more room to groove on Part 2, with duel leads going at it. Amazing stuff! Bring on a Binky led full length, already! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Hard Drivers with Vivian LeeSince I Was A Little Girl/Straight Talk ... 7-inch
Athens Of The North (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $7.99
Vivian Lee's a hell of a singer, and she's right out front here – soaring above the fast funk grooves by the Hard Drivers – who are a group who definitely earn their name! The tune's a mixture of funky soul and club – and it's backed by the slower-moving "Straight Talk" – a song that really showcases Vivian's deep soul style! 7-inch, Vinyl record
