Kentaro TakizawaGradual Life ... CD
Flower (Japan), 2006. Used ... $14.99
Nothing gradual about this sweet little set – as the whole thing grooves from the get-go, with a wonderful blend of seductively soulful styles! The album's contemporary, but it also borrows a bit from 70s club – using warm rhythms and full production to really push the best tracks over the top – all in ways that sparkle like better-known work from the Japanese scene of the past few years, with a sound that really makes Kentaro Takizawa an up-and-comer to rival the greats! Some cuts are straight house, others are a bit more complicated – and the album features guest work from Lisa Shaw, Medby, and Bwana-K – on titles that include "Undulation", "Make It Right", "All The Time", "Floating Memory", "Gradual Life", "Starship", and "Future Lies Within Me". ✨✧ Sadao WatanabeMbali Africa ... CD
Sony (Japan), 1974. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic live set of spiritual soulful post-Coltrane jazz! The great reed player Sadao Watanabe is playing here with a group that includes some of the best Japanese jazz musicians of the past 40 years – Takehiro Honda, Terumasa Hino, Motohiko Hino, and Isao Suzuki, among others. The "Africa" in the title might imply a more rootsy recording – but the continent is represented mostly in spirit, and in the additional hard percussion that punctuates a number of tracks on the set. The real strength, though, is in the jazz playing – which is hard and focused, with none of the indulgences that crept into some of the Japanese players' work at this time. Truly one of the greatest Sadao Watanabe albums ever – and with 2CDs worth of excellent material! Titles include "Afro Talk", "Hip Walk", "Tanzania Yako", "Tanu Song", "Jambo Bwana", and "Saba Saba". ✨✧ VariousThird Noise Principle – Formative North American Electronica 1975 to 1984 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic entry in the Close To The Noise Floor series – one that looks at early American experiments with electronics – but from the DIY generation that was unlocking access to technology that had previously been in the hands of bigger label artists and the academic electronic scene! The work here is a great partner to UK changes in the punk years and beyond – and, no surprise, some of these artists gained greater fame overseas, where their sounds resonated strongly with music from Sheffield, Manchester, Berlin, and other cities on the continent. And if you think you can guess what's coming, then guess again – because there's so much material here, the 4CD set really goes into some deeper, darker corners – and also pulls together work from different areas of the underground that most folks wouldn't normally connect. So while there's familiar names from labels like Ralph or RRR, there's also a lot more surprises – amidst selections by Richard Bone, Data Bank A, Tone Set, Psyche, Patrick Cowley, Mental Anguish, Controlled Bleeding, Psyclones, Lon C Diehl, Suicide, Residents, Chrome, If Bwana, Terry Riley, Geoffrey Landers, Futurisk, Dark Day, K Leimer, Hunting Lodge, Boy Dirt Car, Smersh, Steve Roach, John Bender, Ministry, Move, Nash The Slash, Tuxedomoon, and many others. Comes with a great book-styled package – pages and pages of notes on the music, with lots of images and record covers too! CD

✨✧ Wells FargoWatch Out (CD & hardcover book) ... CD
Now Again, Late 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 19.98
Funky-strutting genius from Wells Fargo – one of the coolest, heaviest acts to come out of the Zimbabwe scene of the 70s – a moment when hard rock and soulful basslines came together brilliantly, to power the raw edge of a handful of groups like this! The music is maybe more late 60s than you'd guess from the date – that heady Zamrock return to the rawer corners of the American underground, at a time when so many of the bigger groups overseas were hitting AOR status – yet an approach that also mixes in plenty of lessons learned from early 70s funk and soul, especially in the massive basslines at the core of the tunes. This is the first time the group's music has ever been reissued outside of Zimbabwe – and the package brings together 11 of their rare singles – with titles that include "Bump Bump Babe", "Bwanawe", "Carrying On", "Too Long Away", "Shades Of Wells Fargo", "Love Is The In Thing", "Watch Out", and "Coming Home". CD
(Very cool package – a complete 72 page, hardcover book – with loads of notes on the band, and a huge amount of vintage images too!)
