Sister SledgeAll American Girls ... LP
Cotillion, 1981. Sealed ... $9.99
A nice little set for Sister Sledge – their first post Nile Rodgers album of the 80s – with production this time out by Narada Michael Walden – with a crisp, uptempo vibe the does a great job of balancing the righteous post disco club groove with the sing-a-long chorus vocals and catchier compositions that made the Sisters famous! Narada doesn't stray too far from the Chic-styled sound of the previous couple of records – with some really catchy songs that hint at the cleaner pop sound of later records with retaining the dancefloor groove. Sweet stuff from Sister Sledge! The sequencing of the record is top notch, each track floating into the next, with the tunes "All American Girls", "He's Just A Runaway", "If You Really Want Me", "Next Time You'll Know", "Happy Feeling", "Ooh, You Caught My Heart", "Make A Move", "Don't You Let Me Lose It", "Mais Makes Me Feel Good" and "I Don't Want To Say Goodbye". KC & The Sunshine BandWho Do Ya Love ... LP
TK, 1978. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Classic 70s work from KC & The Sunshine Band – a record that's not as hit-heavy as previous efforts, but still a plenty great set that's filled with catchy dancefloor funk! KC's clearly feeling the heat of the disco fire he helped to ignite a few years before – and there's definitely an ear hear towards tracks that would boom out nicely on a heavier sound system – kind of a deepening of the sometimes bargain basement production the group got on earlier TK records. That approach doesn't dampen the groove, though, and there's still a nice mix here of soul, funk, club, and tropical modes – sometimes a bit off the mark, but still a heck of a lot better than most of the group's contemporaries! Titles include a remake of "It's The Same Old Song", plus "Who Do Ya Love", "How About A Little Love", "Sho-Nuff'" and "Come To My Island". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch, and is great overall!)

✨✧ TavaresLove Storm ... LP
Capitol, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A definite love storm from Tavares – a set that has the group's vocal approach honed to perfection – really soaring high with some sweet clubby arrangements from Freddie Perren! The album came at a time when the group was riding high on mainstream disco fame – but it's hardly a cash-in set at all – and still really keeps the group strongly in that special harmony space that was all their own! Tavares have a glow that's warmer than some of the east coast groups of the time, and which fits in perfectly with Perren's sophisticated grooves – yet the vocals still bristle with plenty of feeling, and that unified energy that nobody else could touch. Titles include "One Step Away", "Whodunit", "Keep In Touch", "Watching The Women's Movement", "Fool Of The Year", "Goodnight My Love", and "The Going Ups & The Coming Downs". LP, Vinyl record album

Crown Heights AffairDreaming A Dream ... LP
De-Lite, 1975. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A dream of a record from Crown Heights Affair – the group's classic first set, and maybe as fine a batch of early club work you could ever hope to find! Like so many of the east coast acts at the start of the disco generation, these guys are a well-trained funk ensemble, playing at a faster clip for the new dancefloor sound – which means that at the core, they've still got some fantastic instrumentation – and a groove that rivals their bigger contemporaries, like Kool & The Gang, Fatback, or BT Express! The drums are fantastic, the basslines nice and subtle, the horns used with some real grace – and there's also some really cool moog solos on the best numbers – which really makes the album a treat. Titles include both disco and vocal versions of their hit "Dreaming A Dream" – plus the tracks "I Am Me", "You Smiled", "Foxy", "I Am Me", "Feeling Tall", "Every Beat Of My Heart", "Na Na Hey Hey", and "Picture Show". LP, Vinyl record album

David MatthewsShoogie Wanna Boogie ... LP
Kudu, 1976. Near Mint- ... $11.99
One of the slickest of Dave Matthews' funk records from the 70s – but still pretty darn nice! Matthews was the mainman behind the legendary funk group The Grodeck Whipperjenny, and a key arranger in James Brown's sound of the Polydor years – but by this time, he moved into smoother club-type jazz, of the sort he'd penned for Idris Muhammad and other artists on the Kudu label. However, Matthews' always had a talent for the funky groove – and even these otherwise pop disco numbers shine with a musical intensity that surprises us – especially at moments like the funky drumbreak on "You Keep Me Hanging On", the freaky moog on "Shoogie Wanna Boogie", the funky bass solo on "California Dreaming", and the excellent keyboard work on "Gotta Be Where You Are". ✨✧ Walter MurphyFifth Of Beethoven ... LP
Private Stock, 1976. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge crossover album of the 70s – one that took an east coast disco groove, and introduced influences from a wide variety of classical themes – best summed up in the title hit "A Fifth Of Beethoven", which was a surprisingly successful radio tune at the time! The effort's a strange one, but was part of a larger movement at the time that was introducing many older musical modes – such as standards or showtunes – onto the dancefloor in an effort to give the less underground clubgoers something to sink their teeth into. And while the approach seemed like a bit of a gimmick, it was also probably inspired by Deodato's big hit with "Zarathustra" and a few other classical themes – echoed here by Murphy's great keyboard work on a few other numbers. The album features the classical tracks "Flight 76", "Night Fall", "Fifth Of Beethoven", and "Russian Dressing" – plus the non-classical Murphy originals "California Strut" (with vocals by Angie Bofil), "Be Your Own Best Friend", "Suite Love Symphony", and "Midnight Express". Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A live bit of fusion supergroup jamming – one in which Billy Cobham and George Duke are joined by Alphonso Johnson and John Scofield in a set of really soulful numbers! The main focus here is straight fusion jamming, but there's also a nice undercurrent of funk and soul in the set as well – and Jon Lucien makes an appearance on the track "Almustafa The Beloved" – a great number with a break sampled by Peanut Butter Wolf! George Duke indulges himself a touch on "Space Lady", a spare electric keys number with a lengthy spoken intro – and other titles include "Do What Cha Wanna", "Frankenstein Goes To The Disco", "Hip Pockets", "Ivory Tattoo", "Sweet Wine", and "Juicy". This classic duet was the "new" tune on Donna's 2LP Greatest Hits set at the end of the 70s – and is presented here in a super-long version that runs for nearly 12 minutes long, served up here with some nice touches from Harold Faltermeyer and Giorgio Moroder! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Brass ConstructionBrass Construction ... LP
United Artists, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A classic set that goes "slam" from the very first note – and which helped to set the pace for countless ensemble funk acts to come! Brass Construction had a wonderful sound that was the best-realized version of the east coast indie club combos of the mid 70s – funky at the bottom, but polished at the top, in a style that was equally appreciated by fans of disco and more classic funky soul! The "brass" in their title was certainly strongly supported – as the group used a brace of horns on the top of the mix, smoothly gliding over the choppier rhythms at the bottom. And while there's certainly some vocals on the set, they often take second stage to the tight instrumentation of the group! The set includes the classic "Movin" – virtually a blueprint for mainstream funk at the time – plus the tracks "Changin", "Love", "Talkin", "Dance", and "Peekin". LP, Vinyl record album

Fern KinneyGroove Me ... LP
Malaco, 1979. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A standout classic from Fern Kinney – and a set that not only marked a big moment of evolution for southern soul, but also for the Mississippi scene as well! The set was recorded at the Malaco studios in Jackson, but has a vibe that's much closer to some of the TK Records material from Miami – that maturation of southern soul during the disco era – as warmer, more modern touches came into play with rootsier styles of vocals! Mike Lewis handled the string arrangements – giving the record the same disco vibe as some of his other work of the time, including Anita Ward's big debut – and Fern's vocals have this higher range than usual for a southern singer – almost more innately tuned towards clubby rhythms. Titles include a big hit remake of King Floyd's "Groove Me" – really marking the change from the original version – plus "Baby Let Me Kiss You", "Pillow Talk", "Sun Moon Rain", "Angel On The Ground", and "Under Fire". By all rights, the team should have run out of steam by this point, but the album's another winner from their sublime Warner years – caught in a unique space between chart soul, ensemble funk, and disco – taking all the best elements of each, and really sending the whole thing home with some incredible vocals and impeccable production and arrangements! Al Hudson & The Soul PartnersSpreading Love ... LP
ABC, 1978. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Excellent early work from Al Hudson – a soulful talent who stood his own in the late 70s, forging an up-tempo funk sound that lived long past disco, and which was sort of a platform for groups of the 80s to build a new dancefloor sound. Hudson relied heavily on bass-y funk to hit his groove, but he also gave strong focus to the good singers who worked with his groups – adding in good ballads that act as a showcase to members like bassist Kevin McCord, who sings some great vocals on this set. The album kicks off with the up-tempo groover "Spread Love", an anthemic dancefloor tune that almost points the way towards soulful house, and it's got some other nice cuts, like the ballads "Lost Inside Of You" and "Love Me Forever", plus the funky numbers "How Do You Do", and "Dance, Get Down". First ChoiceSo Let Us Entertain You ... LP
Warner, 1976. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A strong move into disco by First Choice – the group whose earlier Philly work had an undeniable impact on the genre! The sound here is smoother and more mature than the group's first few albums – a bit more in the fuller mode of the disco years, less pop overall – and done with some stone Philly production by Norman Harris and Stan Watson – and loads of great arrangements by Harris, Bobby Eli, and Vince Montana. Wonderful work all the way through – with none of the disco filler of other groups' albums from the time – and a deeply-crafted vocal sound that belies the trio's strong history in soul! Tracks include "Ain't He Bad", "Gotta Get Away (From You Baby)", "Yes, Maybe No", "I Got A Feeling", "Don't Fake It", and "Let Him Go". LP, Vinyl record album

TavaresLove Uprising ... LP
Capitol, 1980. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Always-great work from Tavares – one of those groups who never seemed to miss, and who seemed to weather the disco era a lot better than most of their contemporaries! This 1980 album is key proof of that fact – a tremendous little set, done at a point when Tavares could have rested on their hits – yet they kept on getting better and better – really soaring here with impeccable vocals, and tightening things up into a mode that's not exactly 80s groove, but which sure isn't disco either! Harmonies are great – and titles include "Love Uprising", "Break Down For Love", "Only One I Need To Love", "Don't Wanna Say Goodnight", "She Can Wait Forever", "Do You Believe In Love", and "Life Time Of Love". YazzWanted ... LP
Elektra, 1988. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A standout solo moment for Yazz – the singer who first rose to fame as part of the Coldcut soundsystem, then really broke big at a point when UK soul was cracking the American mainstream! Yazz may have a bleached-out look on the cover, but her sound is deeply soulful – and fits in perfectly with the house-styled grooves on the record – backings that have an unabashed love of disco, at a time when listening audiences were maybe forgiving that music for all of its previous excesses, and strongly embracing its best qualities again – in a groove that's maybe a bit similar to Lisa Stansfield at the time, although with more beats and less strings. Production and backings are by Coldcut, FON, Youth, and other hip talents – and titles include her great remake of "The Only Way Is Up" – plus "Systematic People", "Wanted On The Floor", "Stand Up For Your Love Rights", "Fine Time", "Where Has All The Love Gone", "Got To Share", and "Turn It Up". A killer little soul group who recorded with John "Monster" Davis in the mid 70s – really soaring with a groove that rivals some of their bigger contemporaries on the east coast group scene! Touch Of Class sing in a style that's sometimes fragile, but often more suited to the soaring grooves that Davis gives them on the album – a mode that's partly disco, partly pop, and which should have been as huge as any of their Philly or New York contemporaries. There's a "slightly different" feel to the record that we really like – and tracks include "I Just Can't Say Goodbye", "I'm In Heaven", "You Got Nowhere To Come", "One Half As Much", and "I Love You Pretty Baby". Diana RossSilk Electric ... LP
RCA, 1982. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
Diana Ross really finds a way to remake her groove here – a sweet new sound that fits her revamped look in the Andy Warhol image on the cover! Although Ross could sparkle strongly during the disco years, the best cuts here are some of the more midtempo moments – nicely spaced out in ways that allow the singer to modulate her approach, and never push things too far, or get overly dramatic. There's definitely a few of those later modes here – both on ballads and more upbeat numbers – but the core of the record lingers nicely in the silky electric style promised in the title – especially on the great cut "Muscles", which was written for the record by Michael Jackson. Other titles include "So Close", "Still In Love", "Who", "Love Lies", "In Your Arms", and "I Am Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Side two features the even better "Hazy Shade Of Love" – which has lots of great electronics that give the tune a cool moogy feel at points – kind of a space between P&P and TK records, with maybe some Rinder & Lewis touches! MCA, 1979. Sealed ... $7.99
Smooth stepping grooves from The Floaters – still very much in the nicely compressed mode of their more famous debut, and getting some nice production help here from Eugene McDaniels! There's a righteous punch to the record that really shows the influence of McDaniels – a way of keeping things hip, even when hovering near the mainstream – and although the groovers are great, we actually think that the best cuts are the mellow ones – tunes that move in a lightly gliding, almost spacey way – one that has the group's voices crackling nicely with an honest approach that we really love! There's a warmth to these tunes that's undeniable – and titles include "Levitation", "Woman Love/You Are My Lady", "Brand New Lite", "Made Up My Mind", "The Best Of Our Love", "Go Down To The Disco", and "Sweet Lady September". One of the greatest examples of this is her stunning "Runaway Love" – which has a bad-rapping, almost Marlena Shaw-esque monologue in the middle – but other tracks are equally nice, and include "Gypsy Lady", "If My Friends Could See Me Now", "Broadway Gypsy Lady", "You Are You Are", and "I Feel Like Falling In Love Again". Leroy Gomez heads the group on vocals and alto sax – and brings a slight Latin flourish to the album – mixing strings with some brassier "Spanish" horns and acoustic guitars – used here in a way that predates the Gypsy Kings' move onto the dancefloor many years later. Donna SummerLove Trilogy ... LP
Casablanca, 1976. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A mid 70s classic from Donna Summer – and a follow up to her huge, chart-toppiong Love To Love You Baby – and once again produced by Giorgio Moroder! The record didn't hit the commercial heights of the preceding one, though they did utilize the same sort of Euro-disco approach – and it sounds just as great to us! The first half is a longer suite of 4 tracks – "Try Me", "I Know", "We Can Make It" and "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It", and side 2 features 4 more numbers "Prelude To Love", "Could It Be Magic", "Wasted" and "Come With Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

Donna SummerOnce Upon A Time ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
A double-length disco fantasy from Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder – both very much at the A double-length, 4 act disco fantasy from Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder – both very much at the height of their powers here – and able to keep up enough energy to make it through what was originally 2LP set! The work's a unified sort of story – kind of a disco opera of sorts – but more than the lyrics or the story, what makes the album great is the rhythms – full-on and non-stop, rolling strongly from tune after tune in a highly energized blend. Titles include "Once Upon A Time", "Fairy Tale High", "Queen For A Day", "Now I Need You", "Dance Into My Life", "A Man Like You", "I Love You", and "Rumor Has It". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeves. Cover has some ringwear, edge wear, and is lightly bent at the top left corner.)

WarGalaxy ... LP
MCA, 1977. Near Mint- ... $16.99
A massive jammer from War – and a record that brought the group to a whole new generation of listeners – as well as a good number of later fans who discovered some of these jams in the club! The groove here isn't disco, but this tightening up of War's sweet jamming vibe – almost given a sort of Mizell Brothers twist here, with a focus on sharper rhythms, but still plenty of space for instrumental flourishes over the top. Tracks are long and open, but in different ways than the early years – and there's some rhythmic elements on the record that really have the group trying out something new – and definitely finding a sweet spot in the process! The whole thing's great – and titles include the great extended instrumental "The Seven Tin Soldiers", plus "Hey Senorita", "Baby Face", "Galaxy", and "Sweet Fighting Lady". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still in the shrink with hype sticker and round sticker spot. Includes the heavy inner sleeve.)

MasqueradePinocchio (2LP promo version) ... LP
Prelude, 1979. Near Mint- 2LP ... $3.99 7.99
A pretty wild batch of disco tunes – a suite of tracks loosely based around the Pinocchio theme, with vocals by the group Masquerade and arrangements by Boris Midney! The project's definitely got all the best Midney hallmarks in place – especially his penchant for longer tracks with lots of instrumental flourishes – the kind of grooves that build in a slow sort of way, and really let the vocals layer in with the rhythms! The style has lots of echoes of the best Canadian disco modes of the time – and titles include "Cat Tails", "Open The Secret Door", "LOVE/RSVP", and "I'm Attached To You". LP, Vinyl record album
(2LP promo version. Cover has light wear and a hype sticker.)

VariousSynthetic Soul & Other Junk – Mixed By Dom Thomas ... LP
Brutal (UK), 2010. Sealed 2LP ... $19.99 29.99
Loads of 80s elements here – drum fills, post-punk guitars, keyboard bits, and more – all mixed up superbly from Dom Thomas – with the same sort of B-Music/Finders Keepers style we love in his other projects! There's plenty of bits here that seem familiar, but they're nicely turned up on their ear in Dom's hands – kind of a view back to the early 80s, but through a shifting set of filters that keeps confusing things in a nice way! Titles include "1979 Ludicrous", "Ghetto Sun", "After Midnight", "Electro Benelux", "Disco Patch Pop", "Desert Ode 2010", and "Cavernous Sinus". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed, with hype sticker!)
