A rare gem from Zoot Sims – a slightly obscure session issued in the early 60s by United Artists! Producer Alan Douglas put together the record – and as with most of the Douglas-produced albums of the period, the set's got that little "something extra" that makes it stand apart from a lot of other albums by the artist from the time. The whole package isn't too complicated, and just features Zoot blowing easy with a laidback (unnamed) quartet in what seems to be a live session. The solos come fast and free, and with a strong uncluttered sensibility that you don't often hear on other Sims records from the same period. Tremendous horn interplay from the team of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims – and a record that may well be one of the best illustrations of their famous magic together in the 50s! The record's got a way of focusing energy, yet letting each player state themselves clearly and cleanly – almost a perfect small group variation of the larger jazz modes of a generation before – carried out here by Cohn and Sims with a great balance of tone and timing, modernism and swing! There's an excellent rhythm group on the date – Mose Allison on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Nick Stabulus on drums – who almost bring in a slightly soulful undercurrent, which works especially well on Sims' solo moments. An overlooked gem from Zoot Sims – a session that has him working in very laidback company with Jimmy Rowles on piano, who tipples the keys of the piano with a really timeless late nite kind of sound! The style here is a bit like that of the Rowles/Getz album The Peacocks – although a bit more straightforward overall, with a main focus on the talents of both soloists, coming together beautifully in a relatively spare setting. Bass is by George Mraz and drums are by Mousie Alexander – and the real surprise here is almost Sims, who blows with this open-ended, laidback tone that's really great – a bit languid, but never weary – and somehow with a lot more warmth than on many of his other too-tight records from the 70s. A rare treat from Zoot Sims – an album of soprano sax material, recorded in striking contrast to his more familiar tenor! The sound is oddly more traditional than usual – and unlike many other players in the 70s, Sims doesn't use the soprano in a Coltrane-inspired mode, but in a way that takes it back to its roots in jazz from earlier years. And when we say "traditional", we don't really mean trad jazz, because Zoot's phrasing and overall use of the instrument still has a relatively modern feel – augmented certainly by the excellent recording quality of the album. Two obscure quartet sessions from Zoot Sims – and nice ones too! The group's great – with Johnny Williams on piano, Gus Johnson on drums, and Knobby Totah on bass – and Zoot's blowing in an unfettered setting that reminds us a bit of Sonny Stitt in similar settings at the same time! Tracks are shortish, but there's still plenty of room for Zoot to work in a style that's up there with his best bop recordings of the 50s – and at some level, the record's got the same sharp edge as Sims' best early sides for Prestige – but perhaps goes them one better with an added sense of tightness and maturity. CD reissue includes all but one of the tracks originally released on Zoot, and most of Zoot Plays Alto, including "55th & State", "920 Special", "Gus' Blues", "Zonkin", "Blinuet", and "Pegasus". CD

Not to be confused with the more famous United Artists album at the Half Note, recorded in the late 50s, this one is from 1965 – and features Sims with a quintet that includes Al Cohn, Roger Kellaway, Bill Crow, and Mel Lewis. The Japanese issuers of this material have given it the sub-heading "Amazing rare recording by the melodious and drunken tenor sax maestro" – but we'll skip the last part of that description, and focus on the first – because the team of Sims and Cohn was still burning strongly at this point, and break out nicely on longer tracks in this live setting. A motherlode of rare tenor work from the east coast bop scene – rare singles and album tracks recorded for the Dawn label! First up are 4 numbers done by Stan Getz in 1949 with a group that includes Al Haig and Jimmy Raney – on titles that include "Skull Buster", "Ante Room", "Pennies From Heaven", and "Poop Deck". The Getz edge is already very firmly in place on these sides, with a sound to match the quality of Stan's work for Prestige or Roost in the same era. Wardell Gray follows with 2 numbers – "It's The Talk Of The Town" and "In A Pinch" – both done with a similar group that includes Raney and Haig, also recorded in 1949. The scene then moves to 1956 – a big year of recording for the Dawn label – and features 2 tracks that have Paul Quinichette blowing with the Gene Roland group – "These Foolish Things" and "Along About This Time Of Year" (neither of which are on the other Quinichette Dawn/Biograph CD.) Last up is Zoot Sims – one of Dawn's strongest artists – heard here on 6 tracks from 1956, done with a group that includes Jerry Lloyd on trumpet – and including "Blues For The Month Of May", "The Big Stampede", "Jerry's Jaunt", and "I Should Care". 2 rare large group sets – back to back on one CD! First up is Saxes Inc – a unique sax-heavy session done by Warner Brothers, and a blaring batch of tracks played by an all-star all-sax group that includes Herb Geller, Phil Woods, Gene Quill, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Seldon Powell, Hal McKusick, and Georgie Auld! Bob Prince arranged and conducted, and the approach is surprisingly modernist, with the saxes carrying the bulk of the rhythm and melody, as well as the solos – a really great approach that makes for plenty of unique moments – all handled with a sound that's a lot more fluid than you might expect! Titles include "Four Brothers" (of course!), "The Gypsy", "Night In Tunisia", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", and "Axmobile". The second album here is the even rarer 1956 set Trombone Scene – a session done with a much smaller group arranged by pianist Elliot Lawrence, and featuring the talents of four key trombonists – Eddie Bert, Jimmy Cleveland, Urbie Green, and Jimmy Knepper. The sound isn't nearly as full or wide as other records of the type – and there's almost a style that's similar to the JJ Johnson/Kai Winding four trombone project for Debut – except that this one's a bit more tightly arranged. Tracks are shortish, but feature plenty of personality from all players – and titles include "Plungin In", "Hackin Around", "Slim Jim", "Sorta Rumbish", "Hambone", "Sonny's Side", and "Up & Out". CD

The very last performance at the legendary Keystone Korner in San Francisco – a well-blown session from Zoot Sims' overlooked years on Pablo Records! Like other Pablo dates, this one's got a very easygoing groove – a relaxed format that allows Sims to really stretch out on his horn – tenor on most numbers, but some surprisingly great soprano sax as well – a subtle delight that shows up at key points during the Pablo years. Rhythm is by the trio of Frank Collett on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – and titles include "Dream Dancing", "Changes", "I'll Remember April", "Tonight I Shall Sleep", and "If You Could See Me Now". A motherlode of great music from Zoot Sims – mid 70s recordings done for the Groove Merchant label, presented here in a double-length package! Although Groove Merchant was mostly known for its funkier sounds, the work here is nicely back to basics for Sims – small group sessions that give him plenty of room to open up and blow – paired with players that include Lionel Hampton on vibes, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Teddy Wilson on piano, and Buddy Rich on drums. The sound is warm, but never sleepy – and Zoot's tenor has a nice edge on his solos that dominate most tunes. Way more than just a Gershwin Songbook sort of record – thanks to some tremendous blowing here by Zoot Sims, who's mellowed nicely with age, and comes up with a wonderful sound for the record! It may just be us, but there seems to be a lot more soul in Zoot's horn than ever before – more humanity, and a sort of pausing, almost faltering approach to the tunes that takes them way past their overdone versions. The rest of the group includes Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, George Mraz, and Grady Tate – but the Sims' sound is the main star of the set – and it's really wonderful! No surprise, Kenny Drew's backing Zoot up with some tremendous rhythm accompaniment – working here with a trio that includes Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums – just about the best backing a player like Sims could have hoped for on the date! All the tracks here move well past the 5 minute mark – with most approaching 10 – and Zoot's ability to solo strongly in an extended fashion is very firmly in place. As with the earlier UA session, Zoot's playing here in the company of tenorist Al Cohn – both of them stretching out nicely on the album's longer tracks – matching lines on the heads, then stating solos on tenor voices that were diverging a bit more in the mid 60s than they were on more famous recordings from years past. Alive, and plenty lively – one of our favorite albums ever to feature the team of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims – and one that has them really stretching out a lot more than usual! The set's got a nicely jumping sort of feel – with John Bunch or Dick Hyman on piano, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, and Milt Hinton on bass – and titles include "Avalon", "Russian Lullaby", "Where Or When", "Lover Come Back To Me", and "Shine". CD seems to have a lot more tracks than the album – 14 numbers in all! CD

How many different iterations of the "Four Brothers" were there? We don't know, but as near as we can tell, this grouping might most resemble the "original", with four West coast heavies joining forces for a swinging side. Originally making up the sax section of Woody Herman's Thundering Herd, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Herbie Steward and Serge Chaloff are the brothers, and they're joined by fellow Herman alum Buddy Jones, plus Elliot Lawrence and Don Lamond in the rhythm section on this side for Vik. As you'd expect, the numbers are all West coast gems, by the likes of Cohn, Sims, Jimmy Giuffre, Gerry Mulligan and Manny Albam amongst others, and featuring the brothers blowing in a remarkably spry manner for such a heavyweight lineup. 10 tracks in all: "Four And One More", "So Blue", "The Swinging Door", 'Four In Hand", "A Quick One", 'Four Brothers", "Ten Years Later", "The Pretty One", "Aged In Wood" and "Here We Go Again". While not as classic as the bossa sessions that Stan Getz cut for Verve, these early 60's sides by Zoot (for the Colpix label) are still pretty tasty groovers in the pop bossa vein that was sweeping the US at the time. Zoot lays down some nice easy solos over larger bossa arrangements, and Jim Hall joins the set on guitar. Hall's not as Braziliany as players like Joao Gilberto or Charlie Byrd, but he does the job nicely enough, and there's more than enough good moments on this nicely priced 18 track set. Titles include "Instant Samba", "Maria Ninguen", "Recado Bossa Nova", "Poquito Cantando", and "Cantada A Orquesta". CD

One of THE classic Zoot Sims small group recordings of the 50s – recorded with a quintet lineup that includes some great valve trombone work from Bob Brookmeyer! The overall sound isn't nearly as modern as you'd expect from the title (and in fact the cover, which has Zoot sitting in front of an abstract statue, kind of grimacing, might even be taken to imply that the "modern" in the name is a bit of a joke!) But given that Brookmeyer's phrasing is fresh and inventive, and that Sims could easily be moved into some challenging territory with the right players, the set's certainly got a quality that ranks it up there with the best of its contemporaries – no matter how you define the term "modern"! Other players include John Williams, Milt Hinton, and Gus Johnson – and titles include "September In The Rain", "Down At The Loft", "Our Pad", "One To Blow On", and "Dark Clouds". A real lost treasure for fans of Zoot Sims – a well-done live recording from the mid 50s, featuring longish tracks that have Zoot blowing with a trio led by Joe Castro! Castro's a under-acknowledge piano talent from the LA scene of the time – a player with a soulful edge on his best recordings, of which this previously-unissued set now stands! Castro's trio on the set features Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums – and the tracks are long, and very well recorded, especially for a live session of the time. The overall feel is very much in the mode of some of the best work on Prestige from the period, and titles include "Blues For Nat", "It's Always You", "Night In Tunisia", and "Swinging With Rudolph". The group's completed by trumpeter Jerry Lloyd, who helps bring a nice sparkle to the frontline – and titles include "Just Blues", "Wee Dot", "Almost Like Being In Love", and "Down Home". Key early work from trumpeter Jack Sheldon – a set that captures his talents at their most basic and most stripped-down – very much in the spirit of the best LA jazz coming out on the Pacific Jazz label at the time! If the cover makes the set look a bit like a Chet Baker album, that's because there's a bit of the Baker approach here – one that's simple and focused, with a strongly melodic style that comes through beautifully on Sheldon's shimmering horn. But there's also a bit more of an edge, too – thanks to bold piano work from Walter Norris, and the addition of Zoot Sims on a number of tracks – and unlike Baker (or Sheldon on later records), there's no vocals here at all – just a strong instrumental groove. An incredible collection of music from the great pianist Lennie Tristano – and maybe the first-ever set to truly get at the range of genius he could express on the piano! Given that Tristano only made a small amount of records during his too-short career, yet also left a major impact on the field of modern jazz – this set really documents the full span of everything that Tristano had to offer – pulled from a wonderful range of his own recordings, all of which appear here for the first time! These aren't casual solo recordings done in the basement – and instead, the package brings together a mixture of studio, live, and even television performances – all with a different spirit on each of the CDs in the set! One of the most revelatory is the final CD – which features a number of tracks in a "free session" in 1948 - with Tristano on piano, Lee Konitz on alto, Warne Marsh on tenor, and Billy Bauer on guitar – coming together with an amazing sound throughout. That same disc also features a superb 1962 live date at the Half Note – with Konitz on alto and Zoot Sims on tenor. CD1 is wonderful too – a selection of live material with the tremendous Billy Bauer on piano – a player, like Tristano, who was instrumental in shaping the sound of his instrument in modern jazz during the postwar years. CD3 features live performances by a sextet that includes Konitz, Marsh, and Bauer – plus Arnold Fishkin on bass and Jeff Morton on drums. CD2 features beautiful solo performances recorded from the early 50s through 1970. CD4 features trio session, most with Peter Ind on bass – while CD5 features different trio and duo material, but with Sonny Dallas on bass. The set is impeccably done – in cooperation with Tristano's family – and given the wealth of material, the whole thing may well have doubled his recording catalog in the process, while also really illuminating so many different aspects of his career! Coleman's the main blower, though – and the arrangements have a solid base that lets him open up in that exploratory tone he was crafting during the time. And although tracks are short, there's a heck of a lot of soul packed into them – recorded with impeccable quality, much more so than earlier sides. There's an easygoing swing to the record that's simply wonderful – a well-blown sound that's never too overthought or academic – just pure proof of the sort of inroads that Pepper Adams made with the baritone sax back in the 50s, as he liberated the instrument from its work in the chorus to a fully-voiced solo instrument of its own! A great little CD – not only for the very nice price, but for the fact that the double-length set brings together two albums' worth of work that Carmen McRae recorded for the Groove Merchant label in the early 70s! The style here is strongly jazzy, but with a firm dose of soul too – all in a mode that follows nicely from Carmen's late 60s sessions for Atlantic Records, but with a sound that's almost even more focused and in the pocket. The band is largeish, but the rhythms are tight – and even the mellower tunes seem to have a nice sort of lilt at the bottom, one that goes great with the way that Carmen spaces out her vocals on the set. A beautiful document of some of the most laidback jazz ever recorded – the sublime 50s recordings of the Johnny Smith group, done at a time when the lineup included Stan Getz! The tunes on the set feature Johnny's mellow electric guitar setting the pace, alongside wonderfully-blown early solos from Stan, plus some other tenor work from Zoot Sims and Paul Quinichette, who also sit in the tenor chair on a few of these recordings. The tunes are mostly standards, but done in a great style that's not exactly cool jazz, but which has a groundbreakingly easy groove that's simply sublime! A really rich album by Sarah Vaughan – recorded in Paris in 1958, with orchestrations by Quincy Jones – and large group backing that includes some great tenor work by Zoot Sims! The session's one of Vaughan's most cohesive albums of the period, and although it's got "violins" in the title, it's not too drippy or sleepy, thanks to Quincy – who keeps the whole thing moving along nicely, with just the right amount of swing and soul to work perfectly with Vaughan's vocals! Titles include "Live For Love", "Please Be Kind", "I'll Close My Eyes", "That's All", "Day By Day", "The Thrill Is Gone", and "Love Me". CD

2 obscure albums John Benson Brooks – an overlooked 50s jazz composer who often had a penchant for higher concept recordings! The first half of the CD features Folk Jazz USA – one of Brooks' most stripped down records – done with a core group of Zoot Sims on alto, Al Cohn on baritone, Nick Travis on trumpet, Barry Gailbraith on guitar, Osie Johnson on drums, and Buddy Jones on bass. The style is kind of a chamber jazz reworking of tunes from folk sources – done in a way that hangs modernist clothes on older melodies – really dressing them up with the jazz charms of mid 50s RCA! Travis is especially strong on the set – with boldly-stated lines that preserve the melodies, while other players really take off with their solos on the saxes. Titles include "Darling Corey", "Turtle Dove", "Black Is The Color", "Randall My Son", and "Venezuela". Next up is Alabama Concerto – a record based around the solo talents of Art Farmer on trumpet and Cannonbal Adderley on alto sax! The album's based on a number of historical and mythical southern themes – and although it gets a bit hokey at times, the work of Adderley and Art Farmer on the solo sections really opens up the piece and gives it a deep sense of soul. The setting is a drummer-less small group, with Barry Galbraith on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Brooks on occasional piano – and themes include "The Loop", "Trampin", "Little John Shoes", "Milord's Calling", and "Rufus Playboy". Later Atlantic Records material from the legendary Ray Charles – a set that definitely lives up to the genius of the title, in that it shows a real sense of development in Ray's music! Charles has moved from the shorter R&B of his early Atlantic singles, to embrace some greater jazz-based sophistication – served up here with players who include Paul Gonsalves and Zoot Sims on tenor, Clark Terry and Joe Newman on trumpets, Melba Liston and Al Gray on trombones, and Freddie Greene on guitar – all players who really shift things towards a richer, fuller sound – setting the stage for Charles 60s growth at ABC Records, but with less of the country modes. Titles include Charles takes on classics like "Just For A Thrill", "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin", "Am I Blue", and "It Had To Be You" – and the record also features a young Marcus Belgrave delivering a trumpet solo on "Alexander's Ragtime Band". Great early genius from the Clarke Boland Big Band – proof that Kenny and Francy were onto something great, right from the start! The album really has the group hitting the heights of their MPS years – stretching out way past earlier big band modes, into the hip mix of rhythms and soulful solos that made the ensemble unlike any other group in the 60s – a really groundbreaking approach to their music, delivered by a range of top-shelf players! Arrangements are by Boland, who also plays piano – and other group members include Benny Bailey and Jimmy Deuchar on trumpets, Derek Humble on alto sax, Carl Drewo and Zoot Sims on tenor, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax and flute, and Ake Persson on trombone – plus rhythm from the rock-solid duo of Jimmy Woode on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include the Latin-tinged "Los Bravos", and more great originals by Boland – including "Volutes", "The Styx", "Charon's Ferry", and "Box 703 Washington DC" – plus versions of "Gloria" and "Last Train From Overbrook". Tenors can't get any more conclaved than this – as the record brings together 4 players on the instrument in a great match from 2 of the best sides of 50s jazz! John Coltrane and Hank Mobley represent the more open, soulful side of the spectrum – and Al Cohn and Zoot Sims the tighter, more smartly arranged aspect. Together, the quartet of horns work in an open-ended blowing mode with rhythm by Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Art Taylor – in a way that almost makes the set a "Coltrane plus" album for Prestige – one that has the structure of some of the best Trane/Garland sides for the label, but which blows in some other horns with different voicings. If you ever needed a record to demonstrate the subtler shadings of genius within 50s modern jazz, yet still convince you that it could also be relaxed and spontaneous, this record may well be the one. Titles include 2 standards – "Just You, Just Me" and "How Deep Is The Ocean" – plus 2 Mobley originals – "Tenor Conclave" and "Bob's Boys". CD

A real standout in the Bill Evans catalog for Riverside – and that's saying a lot, given how important all of his Riverside albums are! The core session's a rare quintet outing for Evans – one that breaks the mode of the usual trio format by adding in Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Jim Hall on guitar – alongside rhythm players Percy Heath on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums – already a unique enough match for Evans' talents. In a way, the record's one of those sessions that Riverside would sometimes do – pairing a key new voice as a leader with others in an all-star group – but in another way, it's also a return to the sound that first brought Evans' to a wider audience in the 1957 and 1958 years – when he was working in non-trio groups with more famous players – adding his unique piano stylings to their (then) better-known solo modes. The pairing of Evans and Hall has been beautifully documented on other records – and sounds equally great here – but the real treat is Freddie Hubbard's horn, which often lays back on most of the tracks, then bursts in with a brashness that really ignites some of the tunes! He's playing a bit muted here, trying to go for that Miles/Evans combination from the late 50s – but that's plenty ok with us, as we love those records a lot. Titles include "When You Wish Upon A Star", "You & The Night & The Music", "I'll Never Smile again", "You Go To My Head" and the Evans original, "Interplay". This double-length set also expands the original Interplay album with even more material from another group session in 1962 – a set recorded also with Philly Joe Jones on drums and Jim Hall on guitar – plus Ron Carter on bass and Zoot Sims on tenor. We've never seen an original pressing of "Volume 2" of this LP, so we're assuming this is a Japanese-only vinyl issue of outtakes from those sessions. The original side's a very swingin', very groovy early album from Quincy – a big band recording, but handled with soulful touches that really set it apart from the genre! The band is a great one all the way through, featuring solos by Zoot Sims, Sahib Shihab, Phil Woods, Clark Terry and Kenny Burrell. A number of tracks are in a soul jazz mode, others more straight ahead – 11 tracks, including "Moanin", "Daylie Double", "Syncopated Clock", "A Parisian Thoroughfare", "G'Wan Train" and "The Preacher". One of the rarest albums ever recorded by the hiply swinging vocal trio of Jon Hendricks, Dave Lambert, and Annie Ross – a live session from 1958, with backing by a group that includes Zoot Sims, Russ Freeman, and Jim Hall. The feel here is really wonderful – a lot less hokey than on some of the group's Basie-oriented sides, with a style that's perhaps closest to their superb work on the album High Flying for Columbia. Tracks are angular, dynamic, and very swinging – with great lyrics by Hendricks, and titles that include "Four", "Airegin", "Little Niles", "Babe's Blues", "Now's The Time", and "Jackie". CD

Always-hip work from the great Carmen McRae – a singer who moved way past standard jazz during the second half of the 60s – to a point where she was really handling a great range of material by the start of the 70s! Carmen's voice was always great, but there's a really special quality to it once she starts picking songs with a fair bit of variety – almost more expressive, especially when in an indie label setting like this – which features light arrangements and just a small combo that includes Zoot Sims on tenor and Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar – both keeping the jazz currents strong.
