Van Der Graaf GeneratorAerosol Grey Machine ... LP
Mercury, 1969. Very Good+ ... $99.99
A groundbreaking blend of folksy elements and more driving prog – a perfectly balanced set that sums up the unique genius of Van Der Graaf Generator! The group is partly a showcase for the young Peter Hammill – who is vaguely in the territory of some of his acoustic contemporaries on Island Records – but the singer is also really able to open up and soar once the group gets going, and finds a way to ignite his energy amidst the more driving drums and organ lines! There's plenty of jamming instrumental moments to please the prog crowd, but also some more up-close and personal elements too – on titles that include "Octopus", "Afterwards", "Orthenian Street (parts 1 & 2)", "Black Smoke Yen", and "Ferret & Featherbird". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label stereo pressing – B-M5 – in a "Giant Squid" cover. Cover has a small cutout hole, split top seam, some ring and edge wear, small split in the bottom seam, and some light smudges in back.)

✨✧ Festival Big Band (Jerry Van Rooyen)Explosive! ... LP
Philips (Germany), 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A killer batch of large ensemble numbers – very much in the mode of the Clarke-Boland Big Band, or some of the other groups on MPS at the time! The group's led by Jerry Van Rooyen, the Dutch jazzman and composer who did some excellent funky soundtrack work over the years – a fact that certainly shows up in the tracks on the set – which have a sweetly grooving feel mixed in with the large ensemble jazz – a great approach that would have been right at home in some hip Euro film score from the time! Van Rooyen gives the material a soulful feel that's a lot like some of Quincy Jones' best scoring from the 60s – blending together work on organ, Fender Rhodes, and piano (played by Frans Elsen, Rob Madna, and Rob Franken) – with breakaway horn solos by players like Benny Bailey on trumpet and Rolf Ericson on trumpets, Ake Persson and Jiggs Whigham on trombones, and Herb Geller, Ferdinand Povel, and Tony Coe on reeds – most of whom are players who've sparked great notes previously on sets with the Clarke-Boland Big Band, or other hip MPS ensemble projects. Titles include "Sonlite", "Because I Love You", "Some Blues", "For Nathalie", "The Runners", "JBW", "Green", and "Whirligig". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Cover has light wear on the spine, but this is a nice clean copy.)

✨✧ Freedom FamilyAyentsoo ... LP
Academy, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic funky combo from the mid 70s African scene – one who worked previously with Geraldo Pino, and who definitely show some traces of his own great work too – but who also have a madly great groove that's all their own! Freedom Family are definitely on the funkier side of the 70s Afro spectrum – and like Pino, clearly draw lots of inspiration from the best American funk acts of the late 60s and early 70s – so much so that we'd definitely say that this album works equally well as a straight funk album as it does a testament to the greatness of Afro Funk at the time! Most lyrics are in English, and the group use lots of Hammond, riffing guitars, heavy drums, and tight horns – served up in a mighty lean blend, with a great funky 45 style of production. Tracks include "Lala Li", "Good Times", "Life", "Ayentsoo", "The Last Thing", and "Yensuro". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ UnklePsyence Fiction ... LP
Mo Wax, 1998. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the principal albums in trip hop's ascension into the mainstream, and the bright, extroverted flipside to Portishead's darker vision of the late 90s scene. Mo Wax honcho James Lavelle's longstanding Unkle project got a massive makeover when DJ Shadow became the prime sonic architect for the Psyence Fiction LP. Shadow throws everything but the kitchen sink into the thing, working with a wide range of vocalists and collaborators from hip hop innovators (Kool G Rap, Mike D) to whiny alternative rockers (Richard Ashcroft, Thom Yorke). With a project as busy as Unkle, the law of subjectivity pretty much dictates that you're gonna love parts, and hate parts – but Shadow was so on top of his game at the time, he somehow manages to hold it all together. It may not be his best ever work, but Psyence Fiction certainly holds up, and it's an essential piece of the puzzle! Tracks include "Main Title Theme", "Guns Blazing", "Blood Stain", "Unreal", "Chaos", "Rabbit In Your Headlights", Lonely Soul", and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Baden PowellImages on Guitar ... LP
MPS, 1973. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
One of Baden Powell's grooviest albums ever – a brilliant blend of his bossa roots with the freer 70s grooves of MPS! The album follows the mode of some of his other European recordings, but is still a bit different – in that the overall sound is a bit freer than before, with tracks that really open up beautifully – including one or two that hit a nicely heavy groove! The lovely Janine De Walyene sings these wonderful wordless vocals on some of the album's best tracks – scatting heavily on the famous jazz dance number "Blues A Volante" – and drifting moodily behind the guitar on other numbers. Other instrumentation includes bass, drums, and a bit of Brazilian percussion – and titles include the classic "Blues A Volante", plus "Violao Vagabundo", "Canto", "Ate Eu", and "Conversacao Comigo Mesmo". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s US pressing. Cover has light wear and aging, but looks fantastic overall.)

Ricardo RayOn The Scene With Ricardo Ray ... LP
Fonseca, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $59.99
Smoking early work from the team of Ricardo Ray and Bobby Cruz – the kind of record that marked the pair as one of the freshest new voices to hit Latin music in the New York scene of the 60s! The rhythms and modes are all familiar ones, but they're delivered with a different sort of edge here – partly because of Ricardo's heavy use of dark notes on the piano, but also because there's a nice sense of space in the arrangements that almost points the way towards some of the freer thinkers of the Latin Soul years. Bobby's vocals are well-placed, and very soulful – and Chivirico Davila and Felo Brito also sing a bit on the record too. Titles include an incredible mambo reworking of "Parisian Thoroughfare", done as a longer descarga number that's really great – and other tracks include "Chachita", "Mirame", and "Yenyere". LP, Vinyl record album
(Small white label pressing with deep groove and orange Fonseca logo – nice and clean.)

✨✧ Jelly Roll MortonSaga Of Mr Jelly Lord Vol 1 – Jazz Started In New Orleans ... LP
Circle, 1938/1950. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Original pressing of one of this legendary series that pulled together lost Jelly Roll Morton sessions from the Library Of Congress. Alan Lomax captured Morton's genius in 1938, in a special session of intimate recordings, done exclusively for the Library – and which stand today as some of the best recorded examples of Morton's genius. This original 50s recording features great cover art, and very very heavy vinyl. Tracks include "Ancestry & Boyhood", "Hyena Stomp", "Tiger Rag", and "Mr Jelly Lord". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some surface wear & aging.)

✨✧ Bo DiddleyBo Diddley Is A Gunslinger ... LP
Checker, 1960. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Forget the silly cowboy costume on the front cover – because this is a heck of a great album! Bo might have gotten saddled (no pun intended!) with a silly gimmick for the title and image of the set – but the album's one of his best from the early Chess years, and features a rip-roaring batch of tracks that really cut it up in his classic scratchy guitar mode of the time! Lyrics are great – nearly all originals by Bo himself, with that hip swinging, and hard-wailing approach that was always a lot of fun – and cuts include "Gunslinger", "Diddling", "Cheyenne", "Cadillac", and "Doing The Craw-Daddy". ✨✧ VariousAnimals Of Africa – Sounds Of The Jungle, Plain & Bush ... LP
Nonesuch, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
There's no music per se on this disc, just grunts, groans, howls and other sounds from the wild. Twelve different animals are featured, from the fierce, man-eating leopard, to the playful vervet monkey, the timid hyrax, the mighty rhinocerous, the peaceful and beautiful zebra, the strange wildebeest, the regal lion, the cackling hyena, the vicious wild dog, the crafty silver-backed jackal, the enormous elephant and the bovine hippopotamus. ✨✧ Bobby DarinBobby Darin (Motown) ... LP
Motown, 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Bobby Darin's last studio LP? We think so – and the record's a real lost chapter in his career. Bobby's kind of moving past the self-pity of his folksy years of the late 60s – stepping more strongly with a set of arrangements by Jimmy Haskell and Michael O'Martin, almost soul-like in quality, with an earthy touch to his vocals. Bobby always knew he would die an early death, and within a year of this one, he would pass away, almost quietly, and although it's a bit of a stretch to think that you can hear that in his voice, there's definitely something odd about the record. Tracks include "Sail Away", "I've Already Stayed Too Long", "Shipmates In Cheyenne", "Let It Be Me", and "My First Night Alone Without You". LP, Vinyl record album
