"Wireman" has a groove that owes plenty to The Meters, but in the best way possible – as Harbans takes a mix of funky drums, organ, and riffing guitar – then makes it his own with a nicely jazzy sax solo, which has almost a laidback Stanley Turrentine CTI sort of vibe! "Beyond The Cosmic Ray" is slower and spookier – funky drums, but a very cool vibey keyboard sound that makes you feel like you're not getting away from the cosmic ray after all! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Amazing East African recordings from decades long past – one of the most beautifully put together compilations of any kind on Honest Jons in quite a while – which is really something, given their always top tier efforts! It features recordings made in Uganda and Kenya from the 30s to the 50s – some wildly energetic, fast and feverishly performed, others with more lilting melodies and less fraught atmosphere. Essentially it's regional minstrel music with impassioned vocals, the more stripped down songs played on the ndingidi and other spare instrumentation, others have larger ensemble vocals and instrumentation including oud, accordion, violins, Indian harmonium and more. 35 tracks on 2CD, and packaged in what's essentially a small book, filled with great notes and photos. A totally wonderful batch of cuts from the early years of Liberty Records, and related labels – cuts that really bristle with the kind of energy that was exploding in all sorts of styles on the LA scene at the end of the 50s! Liberty may not have the cred as Sun or Chess Records, but the company was really at the crossroads of music on the west coast, and had both the ears and the studio talent to really turn out some great singles at the time – often the sort of material that was very different than the vocals and mood music on its full length LPs. If you don't know this side of Liberty's legacy, you'll really in for a surprise – and even if you do, you'll still discover some overlooked gems in this 37 track set – presented complete with detailed notes on all the artists too.
