✨✧ WilcoSchmilko ... CD
Anti, 2016. Used Gatefold ... $7.99
The best in years from the enduring, still evolving avant rock treasure Wilco! Over the years, and especially in later ones, Jeff Tweedy and company have become much more adept at blending their poetic, acoustic country rock tendencies with art rock textures – as opposed to trading both in fits and starts. We loved their early post-Uncle Tupelo country rock efforts, loved their at the time stunning efforts to leave "alt country" behind on Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and after all these years, with strong core line-up of Tweedy, John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche, Mikael Jorgensen, Nels Cline and Pat Sansone holding together, they're really hitting later career peak in the post-millennium teens! Includes "Normal American Kids", "If I Ever Was A Child", "Cry All Day", "Common Sense", "Nope", "Someone To Lose", "Happiness", "Quarters", "Locator", "Shrug And Destroy", "We Aren't The World (Safety Girl)" and "Just Say Goodbye". WilcoWilco (The Album) ... CD
Nonesuch, 2009. Used ... $3.99
Wilco continuing the looser, less self-consciously experimental, more straightforward songcraft road they'd been traveling on since Sky Blue Sky, after the art rock leaning previous few LPs – including the classic Yankee Hotel Foxtrot – but Wilco being Wilco, their version of straight forward songcraft has more depth and diverse instrumentation than just about any other contemporary rock peers! And after some years of feeling underserved by the "alt country" tag and steering clear of anything too twangy, it's kinda nice to hear the more lap steal and Byrds-y harmonies back in the fold without discarding the art rock textures. Good stuff from a great band in it for the long haul! Includes "Wilco (The Song)", "Deeper Down", "One Wing", "Bull Black Nova", "You And I", "You Never Know", "Country Disappeared", "Solitaire", "I'll Fight", "Sonny Feeling" and "Everlasting Everything". WilcoYankee Hotel Foxtrot (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Nonesuch, 2002. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 34.99
Wilco's post-millennium masterpiece! After years of adventurous sounds and increasingly poetic lyrics being subtly layered over their country rock roots, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was such a radical departure from their first couple albums that it was legendary upon arrival. What's so amazing about it is that it's essentially an art rock album with rootsy heart, somehow carrying the emotional resonance of earlier heart-on-sleeve songcraft with hardly a twangy riff to be found. Titles include "Kamera", "Radio Cure", "Jesus Etc", "Heavy Metal Drummer", "Reservations", "Poor Places", "Pot Kettle Black", "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", and "Ashes Of American Flags". ✨✧ WilcoAM ... CD
Reprise, 1995. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A timeless jangly country rock album from a band that didn't sound like it was setting out to reinvent the wheel, even if they ultimately almost did! At the time, pressure was pretty high to live up the preceding legacy of the Uncle Tupelo and contemporaneous debut of Son Volt, but in hindsight, this is just a straight up, no bs, solid, tuneful batch of songs that don't sound at first like they're among best of their kind until you realize you're humming and singing them to yourself days, years and decades later! Includes "I Must Be High", "I Thought I Held You", "Dash 7", "Blue Eyed Soul", "Shouldn't Be Ashamed", "It's Just That Simple", "Casino Queen" and more. CD

✨✧ WilcoBeing There ... CD
Nonesuch, 1996. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A modern country rock masterpiece. Wilco's second album, an unlikely (for its time) major label double album does an incredible job of showing stylistic breadth and sprawl behind lyrical and emotional consistency, arrangements-wise recalling the best of the band's more adventurously rootsy forbears enough to not unfairly call it "alt-country" at the time, but it's ultimately timeless. Here we are decades later and it doesn't sound like it's aged a day. Includes "Misunderstood", "Far, Far Away", "Red-Eyed And Blue", "Forget the Flowers", "Outta Mind (Outta Sight)", "Kingpin", "Whole Would You Wanna Live", "Dreamer In My Dreams" and more. CD

Wilco's incredible Kicking Television live album – from a rock band that defies convention and cliche – so who else to make one of the best, most interesting and adventurous live albums of the decade! The group was arguably at its live peak in the mid aughts, when Kicking Television was recorded in a residency at their hometown Chicago's Vic Theatre in May of '05. CD

Nonesuch, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from Wilco – one of those key records where they were firmly establishing themselves as one of the most solid, complete bands of their generation – maybe hitting instant classic status with an album like this! The set's both very contemporary and true to their roots – the kind of set you'd swear you heard on AM radio back in the 70s, but which never would have gotten played back then – thanks to the ever-sharpening songwriting skills of Jeff Tweedy, and the overall musicianship and production skills of the group. Titles include "Walken", "Leave Me Like You Found Me", "Either Way", "You Are My Face", "Impossible Germany", "Side With The Seeds", "Please Be Patient With Me", "Hate It Here", and "On & On & On". ✨✧ Billy Bragg & WilcoMermaid Avenue Vol 2 ... CD
Elektra, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second volume in Billy Bragg & Wilco's Mermaid Avenue series – dedicated to bringing to life unfinished Woody Guthrie tunes – thanks to Woody's daughter Nora inviting them to work with Guthrie's lyrics, penned throughout his life, but never finished as recorded songs. Bragg's take is straight-forward, strong-voiced folk, and Wilco takes creative twists and turns with their versions, making for a compellingly diverse bunch of songs. Includes "Airline To Heaven", "Feed Of Man", "Hot Rod Hotel", "I Was Born", "Remember The Mountain Bed", "Meanest Man", "Somebody Some Morning Sometime", "Joe DiMaggio Done It Again", "Blood Of The Lamb" and more. ✨✧ WilcoOde To Joy (black cover variant) ... LP
dBpm, 2019. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The first in a few years from Jeff Tweedy's flagship operation, certainly not the longest gap between Wilco albums, but given Tweedy's prolificacy in recent years and a solid solo album released just a few months earlier, we feel a little lucky to have them back so soon! Ode To Joy is sort of a sly title, as it's their later period subtly arty folk rock in sound and performance, as opposed to a Wilco take on sunshine rock, or a literal riff on Beethoven. Subtle and restrained without dispensing with their distinct avant flourishes all together – but knowing how far they can reach stylistically, the restraint gives it an interesting edge, especially on the songs with heavier personal lyricism. Titles include "Bright Leaves", "Before Us", "One In A Half Stars", "Quiet Amplifier", "Everyone Hides", "White Wooden Crosses", "We Were Lucky", "Citizens", "Love Is Everywhere (Beware)", "Hold Me Anyway" and "An Empty Corner". ✨✧ Uncle TupeloAnodyne ... CD
Sire/Reprise, 1993. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Uncle Tupelo's excellent, unfussy, fairly timeless final album – with equally good songs written by Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy that sound great together even if it's pretty clear in retrospect that they were soon to split up for good. The difference between Uncle Tupelo's loud guitar ragers and folk and roots infused songcraft got a lot more seamless over their years as a band, and on Anodyne they tend to let their rootsier influences shine a little brighter without sacrificing the grit and muscle of the more electric material. This one notably features John Stirratt and Ken Coomer, soon to join Tweedy in Wilco. Includes "Slate", "Acuff-Rose", "The Long Cut", a cover of Doug Sahm's "Give Back The Key To My Heart" featuring Sahm himself on vocals, "Chickamauga", "Anodyne", "15 Keys", "High Water", "Steal The Crumbs" and more. ✨✧ Nels ClineLovers ... CD
Blue Note, 2016. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The Blue Note debut of Wilco guitarist Nels Cline – a player who's quite a talent in his own right, and who seems to reach a new sort of height on this album! The record's an ambitious one – and features sublime larger arrangements by Michael Leonhart – who provides a very different setting for some of Cline's moody work on the strings of the guitar – as woodwinds and strings support his sounds in a few different modes – sometimes acoustic, sometimes electric, with a bit of pedal steel and other effects too. Leonhart's work brings a warmth and humanity to the record that Cline doesn't always have – but at a level that doesn't take away Nels' presence, either – and the set mixes classic standards with a range of unique song choices, in a double-length batch of music that includes "Invitation", "Hairpin & Hatbox", "Beautiful Love", "Lady Gabor", "Why Was I Born", "Snare Girl", "The Bond", "The Search For Cat", "Secret Love", "You Noticed", and "I Have Dreamed". ✨✧ Uncle TupeloNo Depression ... CD
Rockville/Dutch East India Trading, 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
The raw, blistering and still great debut of Uncle Tupelo – a band that played blue collar rock and folk songs with post punk and otherwise 80s underground bred intensity – a fairly simple combination that's as stunning now as ever! Given that the principal players would go on to long and fertile careers as Son Volt and Wilco, it's all the more monumental, but even if they would have disappeared after this first record, it'd still be a genuine landmark! Includes "Graveyard Shift", "That Year", "Factory Belt", "Train", "Whiskey Bottle", "Screen Door", the Carter Family cover/title track and more. CD

A richly-detailed look at England's Ambassador magazine of the postwar years – a publication devoted to promoting the rise of the British cloth industry, but which had an approach that made it much more like a fashion magazine overall! The book is lovely – heavy, oversize, and overflowing with photographs, images from the publication, and other ephemera – all brought together as part of an exhibition at London's V&A museum. Obviously, the publication was not one that we saw on our shores – but the book brings forth this crucial addition to magazine culture in all its glory – in a heavy hardcover book that's 240 pages in length, with images throughout. One of the grooviest records ever cut by Brit easy maestro Harry Roche – and a set that's got plenty of sweet 70s touches in the mix, at a level that really opens things up in a great way! The set's got some key Fender Rhodes from Alaln Branscombe, who has a very unique touch on the instrument – and in addition to Harry's own work on valve trombone, the record also features Ray Swinfield on flute, Chris Pyne on trombone, and Roy Wilcox on soprano and alto sax. There's plenty of other jazz players in the mix too, grooving to sweet arrangements from David Lindup, Derek Cox, Pete Moore, and others – on titles that include "Superwoman", "Pinball Wizard", "Good Morning Heartache", "Lay Lady Lay", "Ludmilla's Theme", "That's Living", and the 10 minute title track, "Spiral" – a mighty nice number! An absolute treasure trove of rare soul singles from Pied Piper Productions – a mid 60s Detroit soul operation that features Funk Brothers Jack Ashford, Joe Hunter, and Mike Terry – laying down sounds that rival the best Motown groovers of the period! ✨✧ Dionne WarwickI'll Never Fall In Love Again (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Scepter/Warner (Japan), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully mature work from Dionne Warwick – one of her last few albums for the Scepter label, with a sense of maturity, poise, and grace that tops even Dionne's earliest classics for the label. She's still working heavily here with Burt Bacharach – who produced and arranged most of the songs – with some help from Hal David and Larry Wilcox. And in some way, it's almost like Bacharach's reinvigorated here – moving into a deeper mode that's quite similar to some of the more complicated tunes on his A&M recordings from the same period – almost unafraid of charting or not, and working instead in a completely adult mode that's beautifully constructed through webs of sound and sadness, loss and longing. Titles include "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", "My Way", "Knowing When To Leave", "Let Me Go To Him", and "Didn't We". A whopping 10 bonus tracks on this CD edition – including "They Say It's Wonderful", plus mono single versions of "Let Me Go To Him", "Knowing When To Leave", "The April Fools", "Slaves", "The Look Of Love" and more.
