Danny BrownAtrocity Exhibition (with download) ... LP
Warp, 2016. New Copy 2LP ... $20.99 21.99
Danny Brown moves over the Warp label still riding high on a longstanding creative win streak – title aside, this exhibition is magnificent – hopping back and forth stylistically between straight-forward, compelling boom bap and brazenly manic weirdness! Danny's bugged out approach to rhyme spitting is in full effect, but there's substance beneath the style, delivering some of the most introspective lyrics of his career to date. Top notch Paul White production, with some truly intriguing samples in the mix. This one may very well prove to be a modern classic! Includes "Downward Spiral", "Tell Me What I don't Know", "Really Doe" with Kendrick Lamar, AB-Soul & Earl Sweatshirt, "Lost", "Ain't It Funny", "Gold Dust", "Pneumonia", "Dance In The Water", "When It Rain", "Today", "Get Hi" with B-Real, "Hell For It" and more. ✨✧ Flying LotusCosmogramma ... LP
Warp (UK), 2010. Used 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Flying Lotus wastes little time seizing the senses on Cosmogramma – bursting with thick, bubbling wave of electronics that float off just as quickly and make room for hypnic harp and buzzing eastern string sounds – and gets more adventurous and unrelenting from there! We've been on board with FL all along and Cosmogramma might be the best ride yet – it's bigger, spacier and more instantly gratifying than earlier efforts – mixing bright, buoyant electronics, waves of textured atmospherics, strings that range from lovely to spooky and other live instrumentation. 17 tracks in all: "Clock Catcher", "Nose Art", "Zodiac S**t", "Recoiled", "Dance Of The Pseudo Nymph", "German Haircut", "Do The Astral Plane", "Galaxy In Janaki" and more. Guests vocalists include Laura Darlington and Thom Yorke (!!!). LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KelelaTake Me Apart (clear vinyl deluxe edition – with download) ... LP
Warp, 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The stunning debut of Kelela – a singer who's been bubbling under for so long, she bursts out strongly right from the very first note! Kelela's ready to take on both the indie underground and the mainstream with this set – as the album's got a depth to rival some of the most compelling Neo Soul work from female singers in the past decade or so, but also has a tight crackle that could get her winning a lot more ears – especially given the strong reception for powerful female soul that's emerged in the past few years! The album's got a very layered sense of instrumentation – mostly produced by Jam City – and these sonic textures work really well with Kelela's voice, which slides into the mix perfectly – but never in a way that the lady buries the message in her music at all. Instead, the whole thing represents a real triumph of the contemporary – showing that there's still plenty of new territory to discover, if you know where to look. Titles include "Frontline", "Take Me Apart", "Jupiter", "Better", "LMK", "Onanon", "Turn To Dust", and "Truth Or Dare". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oneohtrix Point NeverGood Time – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... LP
Warp, 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The contemporary soundtrack is alive and well in the hands of an artist like Oneohtrix Point Never – brought back to a new sense of intensity that it hadn't had since the early days of electronic pioneers like John Carpenter and David Lynch! Tracks are mostly spare, but striking – and, a bit like the music to Speed, the score here has a way of referencing past modes, but condensing things with a more contemporary vibe – shaking out any of the cheesier possibilities, and really making sounds that have a strong current of darkness! Titles include "Romance Apocalypse", "The Acid Hits", "Entry To White Castle", "Ray Wakes Up", "6th Floor", "Hospital Escape", "Bail Bonds", and "The Pure & The Damned", which features Iggy Pop. Astral Dimension (Fabio Fabor)Galassia M81 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Edizioni Minstrel/Spettro (Italy), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Lost sound library genius from Fabio Fabor – working here under the name of The Astral Dimension – which is a very good tag for the sound on the set! Although recorded in 1981, the record has all the warmth of some of Fabor's 70s material – lots of swirling, spacey keyboards – some in these streams of color that are really beautiful, and make you feel like you're taking a trip through the stars, with everything slowing down at warp speed – others in more spare, linear passages that evoke a slightly different mood, and balance things out nicely. The whole thing almost feels like a later update of the old "trip to space" genre for mood music records – and titles include "Antares", "Via Lattea", "Nebulosa", "Beta 700", "Stella Nova", "Monte Palomar", "Eclisse", and "Saturno". ✨✧ Eric DolphyFire Waltz (Looking Ahead/The Quest) ... LP
Prestige, 1960/1961. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
70s 2-fer that combines 2 classic Dolphy sessions – Looking Ahead and The Quest. Looking Ahead is Legendary meeting between Dolphy and Ken McIntyre – and a record that's filled with sharp-edged new ideas! The pair play alto and flute, and they're backed by Walter Bishop, Sam Jones, and Art Taylor. The rhythm's perhaps more soulful than you'd expect – but the reed work is amazing, and the record's got a slyly sinister edge that still holds up extremely well. Titles include "Lautir", "Curtsy", "Dianna", and "Head Shakin". The Quest is a session that was originally recorded under the leadership of pianist Mal Waldron. Like a lot of Waldron's records from the time, this set shows an amazing desire for new forms and modern ideas, and the mix of players – Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Ron Carter, Joe Benjamin, and Charlie Persip – pulls the material in a number of different ways. Carter plays bowed cello, as he did on Dolphy's Out There session, and he gives the set a dark moody feel. Ervin's in his best modernist mode, and he ably trades lines with Dolphy and keeps the whole thing moving nicely. Waldron's writing and arranging is superb, and the tracks feature a lot of weird time structures and unusual modal patterns. Includes the tracks "Status Seeking", "Warm Canto", "Warp and Woof", and "Fire Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

LoveLove ... LP
Elektra, 1966. Very Good+ ... $59.99
Love's first album – a seminal bit of Sunset Strip rock, and every bit as powerful today as it was in the 60s! The style's a bit sharper-edged than the group's classic and more familiar Forever Changes set, but it's still pretty darn great – a completely fresh batch of guitar-heavy tunes that bristle with a sound that's a lot more sinister than some of the group's contemporaries. There's a few folksy or bluesy elements in the mix, but they're almost used in a way that parodies bigger acts of the time – turning the familiar into the freaky, all with a sense of power that's simply mindblowing. Titles include the group's excellent version of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book", plus "Hey Joe", "Emotions", "A Message To Pretty", "Mushroom Clouds", "And More", and "Coloured Balls Falling". (Original gold label stereo pressing. NOTE: Vinyl has a slight warp, but played through for us!)

Stanley TurrentineChip Off The Old Block ... LP
Blue Note, 1963. Good ... $4.99
A solidly soulful session from Stanley Turrentine – one of his few Blue Note dates in the company of organist Shirley Scott, and possibly the hardest-hitting of the bunch! The album's got a great added element in the front line – the trumpet of Blue Mitchell, which really rounds out the sound alongside Stan's tenor and Shirley's Hammond – making for a really full approach, even though the group's a quintet – almost in the mode of some of Turrentine's dates with his brother Tommy, but a bit more lown-down and dirty! There's a definite Basie influence going on but the sound is much leaner overall – and other players include Earl May on bass and Al Harewood on drums. Titles include "One O'Clock Jump", "Midnight Blue", "Blues In Hoss' Flat", and "Cherry Point". LP, Vinyl record album
(New York stereo pressing, with Van Gelder/Stereo stamps and ear. Vinyl has a warp, but played fine for us. Cover has masking tape on the top seam and some aging.)
