KelelaTake Me Apart (clear vinyl deluxe edition – with download) ... LP
Warp, 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 25.99
The stunning debut of Kelela – a singer who's been bubbling under for so long, she bursts out strongly right from the very first note! Kelela's ready to take on both the indie underground and the mainstream with this set – as the album's got a depth to rival some of the most compelling Neo Soul work from female singers in the past decade or so, but also has a tight crackle that could get her winning a lot more ears – especially given the strong reception for powerful female soul that's emerged in the past few years! The album's got a very layered sense of instrumentation – mostly produced by Jam City – and these sonic textures work really well with Kelela's voice, which slides into the mix perfectly – but never in a way that the lady buries the message in her music at all. Instead, the whole thing represents a real triumph of the contemporary – showing that there's still plenty of new territory to discover, if you know where to look. Titles include "Frontline", "Take Me Apart", "Jupiter", "Better", "LMK", "Onanon", "Turn To Dust", and "Truth Or Dare". LP, Vinyl record album

Oneohtrix Point NeverGood Time – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... LP
Warp, 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 25.99
The contemporary soundtrack is alive and well in the hands of an artist like Oneohtrix Point Never – brought back to a new sense of intensity that it hadn't had since the early days of electronic pioneers like John Carpenter and David Lynch! Tracks are mostly spare, but striking – and, a bit like the music to Speed, the score here has a way of referencing past modes, but condensing things with a more contemporary vibe – shaking out any of the cheesier possibilities, and really making sounds that have a strong current of darkness! Titles include "Romance Apocalypse", "The Acid Hits", "Entry To White Castle", "Ray Wakes Up", "6th Floor", "Hospital Escape", "Bail Bonds", and "The Pure & The Damned", which features Iggy Pop. ✨✧ Flying LotusYou're Dead! (with download) ... LP
Warp, 2014. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Flying Lotus is not only very much alive on You're Dead! – he's as lively as ever – delivering his best, most diverse record to date! The Flying Lotus sound is in peak form here – glitchy beats and spacey keyboards, deftly layered samples, and carrying boundless influences from cosmic soul jazz to leftfield hip hop! An impressive guest roster from both realms participate – with appearances by Herbie Hancock (!!!), Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, frequent collaborator and stylistic sibling Thundercat, strings arranger Miguel Atwood Ferguson and others. Standout moments include the tracks "Tesla" and "Moment Of Hesitation", both with some incredible keyboards by Herbie Hancock, plus the uber-moody, Ennio Morricone-sampled "Turtles" – but the whole thing is great, and shows that the Flying Lotus phenomenon is still in ascension, circa 2014. Other cuts include "Cold Dead", "Never Catch Me" with Kendrick Lamar, "Dead Man's Tetris" with Snoop Dogg, "Turkey Dog Coma", "Stirring", "Obligatory Cadence", "The Protest" and more. ✨✧ Danny BrownAtrocity Exhibition (with download) ... LP
Warp, 2016. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Danny Brown moves over the Warp label still riding high on a longstanding creative win streak – title aside, this exhibition is magnificent – hopping back and forth stylistically between straight-forward, compelling boom bap and brazenly manic weirdness! Danny's bugged out approach to rhyme spitting is in full effect, but there's substance beneath the style, delivering some of the most introspective lyrics of his career to date. Top notch Paul White production, with some truly intriguing samples in the mix. This one may very well prove to be a modern classic! Includes "Downward Spiral", "Tell Me What I don't Know", "Really Doe" with Kendrick Lamar, AB-Soul & Earl Sweatshirt, "Lost", "Ain't It Funny", "Gold Dust", "Pneumonia", "Dance In The Water", "When It Rain", "Today", "Get Hi" with B-Real, "Hell For It" and more. Astral Dimension (Fabio Fabor)Galassia M81 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Edizioni Minstrel/Spettro (Italy), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Lost sound library genius from Fabio Fabor – working here under the name of The Astral Dimension – which is a very good tag for the sound on the set! Although recorded in 1981, the record has all the warmth of some of Fabor's 70s material – lots of swirling, spacey keyboards – some in these streams of color that are really beautiful, and make you feel like you're taking a trip through the stars, with everything slowing down at warp speed – others in more spare, linear passages that evoke a slightly different mood, and balance things out nicely. The whole thing almost feels like a later update of the old "trip to space" genre for mood music records – and titles include "Antares", "Via Lattea", "Nebulosa", "Beta 700", "Stella Nova", "Monte Palomar", "Eclisse", and "Saturno". MusiqSoulstar ... LP
Def Jam, 2003. Near Mint- 2LP ... $16.99
Tripped-out headphone soul from the mighty Musiq – sounding better than ever on this album, and well earning the title of Soulstar! Musiq's really got his groove in place here – a warm, mellow, bubbling approach that recalls the style of D'Angelo, but which has more "umph" in the rhythms, and a spacious, electric groove that floats in bits of 70s strings and sitar amidst currently thumping beats. Features guest work by Kindred The Family Soul, Cee-Lo, and Bilal – and with tracks that include "Womanopoly", "Whoknows", "Forthenight", "Soulstar", "Givemorelove", "Dontstop", and "Youloveme". Rita ReysToday – Recorded In London ... LP
Philips (Netherlands), 1969. Very Good ... $19.99
An incredibly groovy record from Dutch singer Rita Reys – quite possibly her grooviest ever, thanks to some very hip London touches from the Scott Walker team of Peter Knight on arrangements and Johnny Franz on production! At the end of the 60s, London was definitely one of the hippest places for a vocalist to work – a place where singers like Elis Regina, Blossom Dearie, and Ella Fitzgerald all opened up their talents tremendously. Rita does the same here – working with instrumentation that's full, flowing, and perfectly pitched to handle both the upbeat moments on the record, and the more contemplative ones – cast out over a well-chosen batch of tunes that go way beyond the standards! Titles include "The Moment Of Truth", "Soon It's Gonna Rain", "Our Language Of Love", "Sing A Rainbow", "You'd Better Love Me", "More Than You Know", and "Come Back To Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Dutch pressing! NOTE: record has a very light warp, but plays fine. Cover has a small mark from an old sticker in one corner.)

✨✧ Charles EarlandLeaving This Planet ... LP
Prestige, 1974. Used 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from organist Charles Earland – a double-length set that's filled with spiritual, soaring grooves! The style here is a perfect blend of the rougher soul jazz of Earland's roots with some of the spacier styles of his later recordings – served up in a sound that's majestic and powerful, almost with an indie soul jazz sort of vibe overall! There's an immediate urgency to most numbers that's totally undeniable – a lesson learned from the electric experiments of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, but fused down into a core essence – then let loose on a soaring journey to the heavens. Earland plays Hammond, moog, clavinet, and Arp on the set – and other players include Joe Henderson on tenor, Dave Hubbard on alto and soprano sax, Eddie Henderson and Freddie Hubbard on trumpets, Marc Elf on guitar, Harvey Mason on drums, and the incredible Patrick Gleeson on synthesizers – bringing in a spacey edge to the record that's really amazing! Rudy Copeland sings a wonderful vocal on the title cut, "Leaving This Planet" – and all other instrumental cuts include "Red Clay", "Warp Factor 9", "Tyner", "Van Jay", "Never Ending Melody", "Mason's Galaxy", and "Asteroid". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has some wear, a name in large letters on all sides, and an index sticker. Labels have some pen.)

✨✧ Ron Trent & OthersRon Trent Presents Prescription – Word, Sound, & Power (6LP set) ... LP
Prescription/Rush Hour (Netherlands), Mid 90s. New Copy 6LP set ... Out Of Stock
An incredible tribute to the short-lived, but extremely influential Prescription label from Chicago – started by Ron Trent and Chez Damier in the mid 90s, as part of the second wave of house sounds from that city – music that was even more underground and farther-reaching than the first wave of house a decade before! The box features most of the rare singles on the label, plus unreleased tracks too – and is very heavy on Trent's music, which was really embracing lots of bigger ideas – taking house music far from the mainstream that had taken over once the first wave spread overseas. Currents of jazz, cosmic energy, and deeper spirits run throughout these sounds – and titles include "Prestcription", "Seduction", "Energy", "I Feel The Rhythm", "Space Ridims", "Morning Fever", "Black Magic Woman", "Piano Track", and "History" by Ron Trent – plus "Morning Factory" and "Don't Try It" by Chez Damier & Ron Trent, "Enchantment" by Angora, "Soul Samba Express" by Anthony Nicholson & Ron Trent, "Life 4 Living" by USG with Minca Elam, "On My Mind" by Konfusion Kidzz, "Love Is The Message" by Ani, "The Answer" by World Sky & Universes, "Be My" by Noni, "Night Places" by Warp Dub Sound System, and "The Choice" by Chez N Trent. Sikiru Ayinde BarristerIwa ... LP
Siky-Oluyole (Nigeria), Early 80s. Fair ... $5.99
Hypnotic Fuji music from Alhaji (Chief) Sikiru Ayinde Barrister and his Supreme Fuji Commanders! The rawly and heavily percussive sound is makes a strong sensory impact – with nicely recorded, echoey vocals out front of that thundering, though impressively rhythmic backdrop. The album features 2 longer songs on one side and a handful of shorter pieces on side two. Titles include "Iwa", "Alhaji Rasaq Okoya", "Late Alhaja Sidikat Abeni (Haruna Ishola Bello)", "Olabisi Ilori", "Owolabi Ilori", "Fuji Americano" and "Singing Roundabout". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ UndergroundPsychedelic Visions ... LP
Wing/Wah Wah (Spain), 1967. Used (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic set of raw raunchy rock from the late 60s – originally issued as kind of a "cash in" record to grab some bucks on the rise of psych and garage – but a record that easily stands head to head with the best of its time! These guys drink heavy from the same brew as The Seeds, Count Five, Sonics, and other groups of the period – and work in a raw, garagey style that's hardly what you'd expect from Mercury Records Wing label subsidiary – especially given the sound of the guitars! Many cuts are covers, but they're performed with as much bold energy as the original tracks – and the set is awash in freak, fuzz, and echo! Titles include "Psychotic Reaction", "Psychedelic Dream", "Psychotic Vibrations", "Mind Jammer", "The Warper", and "Turn On Your Love Light". LP, Vinyl record album
